The late Carl Barnes, Cherokee corn breeder, treasured the markings when they looked like eagles. I remember him crying with emotion when he handled them. For clarity, the color markings don't make it a "variety". Many tribes had corn with this spot. The Navajo call it "eye spot". I have found this marking in Anasazi corn and North Dakota homesteader's corn, as well as among many desert tribes. For a similar illustration, a pinto horse does not make it a breed. Horses in any breed can have the pinto pattern from wild mustangs to thoroughbreds. I suspect that this color marking is rare, because in a mixed color population because it messes-up other colors. But, it you take the time to breed it true, as Ed has done, it is very unique and beautiful. I doubt that anyone has perfected the trait, and created a "variety" as much as Ed.
