What does it mean to be transgender, and what does it look like in the brain?

The microstructure of white matter in male to female transsexuals before cross-sex hormonal treatment. A DTI study
www.journalofpsychiatricresear...
“Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) has been shown to be sensitive in detecting white matter differences between sexes. Before cross-sex hormone treatment female to male transsexuals (FtM) differ from females but not from males in several brain fibers. The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether white matter patterns in male to female (MtF) transsexuals before commencing cross-sex hormone treatment are also more similar to those of their biological sex or whether they are more similar to those of their gender identity.”

“This paper is about one of the most marginalised and excluded groups: transgender children.”
Transgender kids show consistent gender identity across measures
www.sciencedaily.com/releases/...
“A study with 32 transgender children, ages 5 to 12, indicates that the gender identity of these children is deeply held and is not the result of confusion about gender identity or pretense.”

does this mean that questioning people could simply get a brain scan to show weather they're trans or not? rather than going through months of internal struggles? or are the differences too subtle and varied to tell someone a specific yes or no as to if they're trans?

I look forward to the day when a routine test or two could help someone like me. I struggled for the longest time, trying to accept my diagnosis of gender dysphoria. My personality type relies more on facts and evidence than feelings. While there was a ton of "evidence" throughout my life, eventually, I had to learn to trust my feelings, too. A simple, routine medical test of some type would, I think, really help those who trust their intellects over their feelings.

I worked with a pre op trans person a few years back. He was initially employed as female and that was how everyone was first introduced to him as. Everyone, no matter if they knew he was pre op trans or not, identified him as male on a sub conscience level. There was just a sense about him that you got that was masculine. And it wasn't that he dressed butch or anything like that. A few months later he announced that he was going to start hormone treatment for his gender op and would be identifying as male going forward. So it really doesn't just come down to a personal internal choice of the individual - it is just who they are.

We often over look the fact that we the transgender folk have dealt with our issues for a vary long time. But when we come out to family and friends, they often see it as a choice that was made one Friday morning. For them its suddenly there. It just pops up, like yesterday it was not here and now today it is. This leads them to feel like its a sudden choice that we made one Friday morning. Thus we must be confused. When in actuality, the reason it just came out is usually because we just can not hide it any longer. We have to be sure to express that we have been dealing with these things for a vary long time. We have just been hiding it deep down. Most of us hide it vary well. Keeping it hidden for fear of how they would except it. They may never fully appreciate how painful and depressing it is to be the wrong sex. That is when your brain and sole do match the body.

I found out that people who argue these facts cannot be argued with because they dont care . II cannot count how many times I have stood in front of some who stared me straight in the eye and said you cannot be born intersex the same as being transgender scientifically proven facts intersex and transgender are real just because your not means nothing at all just smile at them and walk away. i'm a girl I was born a girl with some male anatomy so they forced me to be a boy but I'm not a boy so i'm transgender I'm a women now the same as many of my transgender sisters i'm still intersex until I get a very expensive surgery done but I still grew up felling horrible about who I am because of how I was born because of a stigma forced on me from birth and oh look at that now everyone is making remarks about the high rate of suicide in the transgender community after treating us like less than human for most of if not all of our life's. I wonder why we feel so miserable it cannot be that we are socially unaccepted for who we are. or the extremely high % of rape and murders in our community . but yeah just all of you small minded bigots stay in your safe bubble and through stones and continue with the hate you spread . your the reason we have such high rates of suicide in the transgender community.

The problem is not society accepting who you want to be, it's you, you need to accept who you are. the big takeaway is that some point in life maybe in highschool, you accept yourself and what you were born with, you work with what you got, but people who transition don't accept themselves before they transition, they don't learn. I don't know what percentage of the transgender society is religious, but I wouldn't be surprised if next to none were, because it teaches you to be grateful of yourself, what *god* gave you. Believe it or not. (Ignore my username indicating a certain gender) I am a transgender woman and I remember telling my family and coming out online so to speak about who I am as a person. My family was practically on the verge of disowning me. Sisters thought I was just attention seeking and that im just confused....after a while I could see i was hurting my family so I decided to just ''pretend'' to be a man , be their ''son'' in the process of losing my self identity. It feels horrible to know that your family hates you just because you do not identify as a gender they see you as. My parents are being selfish....I understand that they had dreams about me having a ''normal'' family and hopes about my future. It is like I have failed them.... so two yrs on. I still feel the same, trapped, scared and lonely. I dont want to be homeless!! people say its easy , dont let anyone tell you who you should or shouldn't be...umm but if its going to leave me homeless...im just going to give in untill I actually have employment and save up to move out 22 yrs old here. Good. I just want to point out that. Transgender people are really small minority, so expansive studies might be hard to combine in the common concept of the word. I do not know the % amount of transgender people out of total population, but I assume it is easily below 5%. That in mind smaller group of people getting studied should matter a bit more as it would be larger portion of the total. I totally agree though that there is way few studies to make basis for STRONG scientific evidence.

I really hate this transgender stuff. To be clear, I don't hate transgender people, I hate the idea of it. I'm not trying to be insulting to anyone who is transgender or supports them with this arguement. But if someone had an eating disorder, what would a doctor do? They wouldn't encourage them to stop eating and get them onto diet plans and such. But that is exactly what happens with transgender people most of the time. "I feel fat so I shouldnt eat." "You're right! Lets get you on a diet, eat these pills, you don't have to eat if you dont want to! Do what ever makes you comfortable!" "I feel like I was born a female instead of a male." "Ok then! Let's get you some surgery and maybe some of these pills! Just do what ever makes you feel comfortable!". You see what I'm saying?
@ezrakhole9722
@ezrakhole9722 7 жыл бұрын
Sprinkle Blitz the issue with that argument, is that you can live a sustained, long and happy life with SRT and your body continues to function properly. With an eating disorder deteriorates your body till it eventually stops working altogether. It's not sustainable, and your life shortens drastically(months). Even if you are allowed not to eat your still unhappy and unsatisfied with the image that you see in the mirror. With SRT almost all patients are happy and satisfied with their treatment and move on to a maintenance type procedures. TL:DR - an eating disorder has detrimental effects on a persons mind and body. Especially if they are allowed to stop eating where as SRT improves quality of life for the person.

so you take two seperate psychological topics and compare the treating of them the same when they are not. to show what i mean lets take anirexia and autism, you wouldn't treat autism the same way you treat anirexia. also anirexia is something that is purely external (learnt, normally though outside influrances and behavour) unlike being transgender which is something from birth. another example would be anxity and being transgender, you can't treat them both the same way. before comparing psychological states together know the diffences between them first.
@0MGitsRayRay
@0MGitsRayRay 7 жыл бұрын
the difference is that an eating disorder is learned and curable. when you're transgender, it's something you are biologically and psychologically born with. it isn't "curable" it is treated with the right surgery and hormones for that person to feel comfortable in their body. same with anorexia patients, they get therapy and help to make them feel comfortable in their own body too.

Yes, but what about the fact that many children (I've heard 70-80%) who express gender dysphoria actually grow out of it and do live their adult lives as the gender they were assigned as? This issue troubles me, because I grew up acting more like a boy and dressing more like a boy than like a girl. I even related to other boys better than girls, didn't understand girls, and deeply longed for a way to change myself into a boy. Now I'm a grown woman and shun the notion that I am in any way a man. What if these young ftms out there, going through transition to become male, would have just grown out of it in a few years? Also is it not true that hormones affect the mind? So would not a girl who feels more like a boy naturally develop into a woman as her body changes and releases more estrogen? People say that trans men probably were exposed to more testosterone when they were in their mother's womb and that is why their bodies are female but the brains more male. Yet if they were to keep living in their bodies without transitioning, would not the estrogen produced during adolescence and onward offset the testosterone of their youth? I'm not saying that they would become super girly girl later on. I still hate shopping and wearing makeup and hardly dress up. But I still am a woman.

I get what your saying.... but I think that your more queer / gender non conforming than specifically trans.... being trans you would have felt more of a hatred for your genetic body than a childish dislike..... your mind wouldn't change in adult hood even after estrogen sets in..... yes estrogen and testosterone are powerful hormones that help change signal sent to the brain.....their more like a high than MIND CONTROL... like being high on feminity or masculinity... it doesn't change your ENTIRE thought process... Just your initial instincts.... and this is coming from someone who is trans.

If the kids socially transition at a young age then there's nothing that can't be reversed so they can grow out of it without any harm done and go back to being the gender the were assigned. But if the child continues to feel that way then it's a good they started early. Once they reach 16 when they can't start taking hormones they're going to be certain that's who they are, in fact the studies usually are only for very young children that occasionally say something about wanting to be a boy not persistent and consistent male behaviour from birth. And believe me, puberty and oestrogen was the worst thing that happened to me, I was already hating my body at 6 years old but at 15 I wanted to die everyday because I was made to go through the wrong puberty. The gender experts know the children that will grow out of it and which won't, it's just important to get your child help while they're young in case they don't grow out of it because going through the wrong puberty is hell

Thank you for taking this on, D-news. As a transsexual person myself there's s couple things I'd like to note here. First, while all the science stuff is kind of neat and affirming for some trans people I personally feel like it mostly benefits cisgender people who are looking for a reason to justify our existence. This happened with the gay movement too- it can feel like some kind of weird witch hunt looking for a gene that says we are allowed to exist because we don't have a choice. Gene or not, different brains or not, everyone should be able to choose who they are and how they want to be in the world. Stop hating on choice! Second, yes trans people do face violence but it is worth noting yhat a vast vast majority of that violence is directed at trans women of colour. There have been at least eight trans women of colour murdered just this year alone. As Laverne cox said in an interview, visibility and education like this is great but we need policy change!

***** Dipshits, dna is the blueprint. Gestation doesn't always follow those blueprints (that's what the whole video was about). Intersex people end up all over the place in terms of anatomy. Many of them have more than two sex chromosomes which can make things somewhat tricky for those with klinefelter's syndrome. Doctors don't even follow DNA. They follow anatomy. Throw in a few X chromosomes that act like Y chromosomes and you get a heck of a confusing mess of a grey area. If we were to talk about construction, the blueprints wouldn't mean anything in terms of how a building is defined if the construction crew builds a building completely different than what the blueprints designate. Finish high school before assuming you know anything.
@LeonardGreenpaw
@LeonardGreenpaw 9 жыл бұрын
***** well seeing as how the brains of the children were structured differently, it might actually be the result of different genes in their dna to cause it. Sure if you just look at the X or the Y, it seems simple, but that blatantly ignores the complexity of DNA. There may very well be different genes in the chromosomes that effects gender in a greater way than we thought. Plus there ARE people born without a clearly defined genetalia (some have both and some xy people are born with a vagina and no penis due to developmental issues), most of which go their entire lives without realizing it due to infant cosmetic surgery. Now if genitals can be that fluid even given the observation of X and Y's it stands to reason that there is more nuance to the dna as it pertains to gender than just those two letters

What the researchers didn't take in account (or at least you didn't mention it) that does brain wiring differences could be caused by behavioral differences. For example a transgender female (believing she is a man) would tend to behave more like a man than a woman as a way to satisfy her desires. Due the brain's plasticity characteristics, this could explain the differences in brain wiring, and as a conclusion, those differences wouldn't be the cause of gender dysphoria but rather a consequence.

The comments section here is so ignorant. It really fucking hurts to see how much people go out of their way to diss other people. It also really fucking hurts to know, statistically, (because my four closest friends are trans) three of my closest friends are going to die. It's a fucking horrible horrible feeling, when all you can do is just try to stop them, and knowing that you often can't Two of them have attempted to kill themselves while I'm their friends. And it's all because of the complete and utter ignorance shown in this comments section. There's a reason lgbt education is going to become compulsory in British schools.

Kieran Walker Go read a dictionary and learn the definition of the word ignorance. You sound incredibly uneducated. Ignorance is not a synonym for intolerant.
@kieranwalkerkw

"Ignorance: lack of knowledge or learning." (source: oxford english dictionary) People that have a lack of knowledge on the matter are the ones that are being transphobic. I've also had experience with this, over the past year especially, learning how to treat people who're trans, from trans people themselves. Although I'm only an A grade at English, have only a high school level of it (well, upper school here in the uk) and also am on the autistic spectrum causing me to often have trouble communicating, I know what I'm saying when I'm talking about this. I also know ignorance isn't a synonim for intolerant, although in the context, it could be used. Dude, I do know what I'm talking about.

So you know I don't mean to be rude, but they were almost saying it is a mental illness. They were literally saying it was a brain condition. Just saying...
@LushiaKyobi
@LushiaKyobi 5 жыл бұрын
We could say introversion is a brain condition, or being bilingual is a brain condition. Brains are incredibly diverse, and what seems to define "mental illness" or "disorder" is the fact that the wiring highly interferes with daily life--but two factors of that are internal interference (stemming from the condition itself) and societal interference (such as discrimination for being different). Keep in mind that homosexuality used to be considered a disorder in the DSM, but now it's more commonly considered a natural variation, and societal interference has definitely decreased. Feeling like an actual human instead of a disorder sure helps decrease incidence of depression, anxiety and the like. A similar thing is occurring with Autism Spectrum Disorder, as people are recognizing that many issues autistic people face are from society, and from co-existing health conditions that can occur as a result of having sensitive brains and bodies along with the added stress of navigating an unfriendly world.

Going to find reputable scientists is a good choice. I believe if you want to make a judgement on Transgenders you need to absolutely need to balance up the science, the psychology from good reliable sources. I'm transgender and some may find it shocking that I do not mind if someone is maybe against Transgenders. As long as I know they've researched it and made a good judgement it's fine by me. Obviously it would be more favourable if everyone was able to understand us but you know it's fine if some don't.

As a transgender girl, who also loves STEM, this was so charming to watch, it helps me understand myself better. However, from an impersonal scientific perspective, would the brain scans of a masculine cis girl be significantly different from one of a transboy? And vice versa? I like this subject but I would love to find more sources about this.

Good presentation and summary but unfortunately the samples presented here are extremely small to be able to extrapolate to the larger population of all people who are transgender. More study needs to be done on a wider basis with bigger groups and verified with multiple studies.

Lately it seems to be the next "thing"... Does every transgender get their brain scanned? I am very curious about this because I'm mentally ill and there are so many people that claim to have what I do but obviously don't. So I am trying to be open minded about this but it's very confusing. I also know that while pregnant, woman can take something to have a specific gender. Could that be causing any of this? So much research to do before I can have a strong opinion.

Agh I’m sorry but there is so much false information in this video. From the “there’s is a similar white matter from female to male subjects who haven’t received hormone therapy to people who have been assigned male at birth” Men and women have nearly identical whit matter in the brain and actually women have slightly more.

Why does it matter to you? Why can't you accept your own failures and just die? Because it's not that difficult, the more you struggle with keeping yourself alive the harder it'll be to actually die. Masturbation destroys the heart and the brain simultaneously, the other organs like stomach, liver, intestines, kidneys, lungs become numbed down because there's no blood flow anymore. Your parents are suffering because of you and they didn't ask for this, they wanted a healthy, mature and responsible man.

Thanks guys for doing this video. I'm not transgender but I am gay, and I knew that by the time I was in kindergarten. Thanks for emphasizing that sexuality is not a choice! I'm here to tell you that, after many years of trying to fit into the "straight" mold, I finally embraced who I really am and am a much better person for it. Those who believe otherwise, because of their upbringing, the church, or other reason, are just plain wrong. Thankfully this country seems to be moving in the right direction in this regard, partly because of videos like this one. Thanks again-- love you guys!

I like how they say gender is "assigned at birth," like some person just randomly tells each baby what their gender should be. More like each person has XX chromosomes or XY chromosomes that biologically define their sex. A human baby is not "assigned" the species homo sapien at birth; that's just what it is biologically.
@wolfganghammatt5406

fedfoofy what they're saying is that the chromosomes assign the gender
@ashleyashleym2969
@ashleyashleym2969 9 жыл бұрын
fedfoofy Yes they are assigned based on their genitalia and if they have ambiguous genitalia they are assigned which ever the doctor feels is more appropriate. They don't test your DNA so they actually have no idea if you're XX chromosome or XY chromosome or something completely different.

@ashleyashleym2969 9 жыл бұрын
Ashley ASHLEYM Also humans can ony give birth to other humans it's not like there is a tiny possibility that the baby will not be human but there is generally a 50/50 of the sex of the baby.

fedfoofy Its actually far more complicated then XX=Girl XY=Boy. there are girls who are born XY (not trans) but they have what is called androgen insensitive syndrome so basically they are "genetically male" but they bodies are unable to process testosterone and they end up developing into women. there are also people who are born with an extra X so they can be XXX or XXY.

Thanks for this vid Dnews! Although I hate how people always have to put so much emphasis on the 'popular trans narrative' of trans people knowing from when they are really little. There are a lot of trans people who didn't discover their true identity till later in life and that doesn't make them any 'less trans'. If you didn't know when you were a kid and you are trying to find resources to show your mum who doesn't understand/believe you, finding only videos saying that popular trans narrative all the time makes it very hard. You just get your mum or whoever saying that you can't be trans because you didn't know till later on. I don't think I've ever seen a trans person make a video where they talk about being trans and how trans people know from a little kid, that's because if you are trans you know that that's definitely not always the case. only trans people themselves seem to respect the diverse community of transgender people and their stories.
