I have so much appreciation for the open minds of the new Martial Artists. It is a breathe of fresh air to see and come to realize the future will be that much greater for the new genereation through these great Master and Grand Masters. I have studied a few areas of martial arts and have been condemned by each one except those who were open minded. Some are still closed minded to believe that their style is the most supreme. It is slowly being realized that there is not just one method. Years ago I was told if I left Shotokan Karate and went to another style (Tae Kwon Do) not to return. Once in Tae Kwon Do I was also warned of the same thing. I did go but years later my instructors realized that no style has the corner on the arts market. I only wish that life was longer so I could experience many more styles and put more time into them. Thank you so much for sharing.

When you were young, you were strong, and your techniques were strong, powerful, used to dominate others so that you can become even MORE powerful. When you get older, you realize that those things were useless and true power can be found in simpler and subtler movements, and you use those movements to defend what you've always had or to reclaim the things that were lost.

It really makes me wonder about how volatile life was back then in order for individuals to have a need for martial arts. On top of that, how much more effective those people were back then when their lives were on the line. Self defense as a whole is both amazing and horrifying to me. I have much respect for the art.

Well said. It was not discussed when I started and kept hush hush. But thankfully it's right that all martial artists are recognised for whatever part they have played in promoting these incredible arts.

At 22.10, you get a glimpse of why he trains so hard to try to reach the highest level of the martial art, why he goes to Okinawa to try to discover the roots of karate, all in his own words.

Thomas, Karate originated in India and later in China, approximately 12 centuries ago. Its origins refer to the Buddhist monk Bodhi Dharma, since it was he who developed the martial system known as Shorinji Kempo (or Kung Fu Shaolin). I do not know specifically the name of the style of Kung Fu. Your reference is most welcome. Oss

only the shaolin kung is get influnece by the india master Bodhi Dharma,, but is mixed with the local chinese kung fu skill also , but kung fu is so many styles and clans in China . the okinawa (Ryokiu island , its a part of Great china before WW2 )style is based on chinese white crane kung fu , it is so differeant from the shoalin North style.... make some research , u will understand more .....

Okinawa could never be part of China, as Okinawa is the Japanese name for the former Ryukyu kingdom, itself NEVER A PART OF CHINA. Ryukyu was a tributary to China, never a Chinese province or state. Ryukyu was at the same time tributary to Satsuma Please, stick with facts and not fiction.
