32X clears throat. I worked for Electronics Boutique when that turd came out.... my entire time I worked there, I only saw 1 customer buy anything for it.... either the actual system or a game. In a couple months it was gone and forgotten due to Saturn coming out in US. Not sure if call that one a good Sega system. There was 1 or 2 exceptions but otherwise the games were way disappointing compared to the 40 times the power claim on the box. Kinda similar to the Atari Jaguar in that regard.... big hardware claims on rushed hardware with games that look only slightly better than 16 bit.

Being from France, I will put the Master System much higher in the ranking. I have an infinite love for the SEGA 8bits: SG-1000, SC-3000, SG-1000 II, Mark III/Master System... My biggest crush being the Japanese version with the FM Sound unit even if the best games came in Europe as Japan stopped the Mark III quite early. Love SEGA!

@@weston407 Yes, it seems to be the case. I think the 2 main countries where the MS did better than the NES were Brasil and the UK. And in France, the NES and MS were even: a real console war ;) But to be honest, in Europe, consoles really took off with the 16 bits. Becore, micro-computers were kings: the Amstrad CPC and Atari ST in France. Peace!

#1 for me has to be the Sega Saturn. Not because I grew up playing it, not because I played it more, and not because it has better games. It's number one on my list for ONE reason, and that is Panzer Dragoon Saga. It was well over a decade old when I first played it but it still managed to be an exceptional game. If I have to describe this game in one word it's MAJESTIC. It may not be very impressive visually but the atmosphere this game creates is breathtaking. I've never really played the Sega Saturn up until that point and that game instantly made the Saturn my favorite Sega console. That's how good Panzer Dragoon Saga is!

Great list!! As a Nintendo kid my best friend owned a Genesis, sega cd, 32x and my neighbor had a sega cd. I loved playing Genesis so much and the parents didn't go for a second system at the time. I remember odd fmv titles for the cd and they blew me away at the time. Eventually I would own a Game Gear instead of the Game Boy my cousin had and fell in love with that as well even with that blurry screen. The dreamcast I saved up for with my own money working at a Best Buy stood in line on release day and was enamored with the games and even the odd accessories. It's my number one console but I can see my list changing as I go through more of the Genesis library. As an adult I am slowly collecting Saturn, Genesis, dreamcast, some last more rare game gear games and imports (game gear McWill molded of course so gorgeous!) masters syatem and some Sega CD games. Really great systems. Found a good deal on a cdx and might have to pick it up. I COULD go on and on. Love the channel John ❤ I also want to give a shout out to Sega Lord X also for starting my passion for collecting on the Genesis and Saturn.

In fact, the most I have ever paid for a game is Castlevania Bloodlines (like 56 bucks!). The Dreamcast is another one I love, but I only got it about 4 years ago and do not have too many games. My sisters and I played the heck our of both those games until we were able to start building our library. Lots of memories with the genesis growing up, I remember buying my 32x and Menecer both on closeout at Kaybee toys. Although both accessories didn't live up to my expectations I was happy being able to play Doom and T2 arcade. @@lonreed9743 I had a genesis, and even talked my parents, as an 11 year old mind you, into getting a 32x when it was like $150, down $50 already. Then it broke, and when I got it exchanged, it was like $79. Then kept dropping like a rock til it hit $20. I liked the 32x at the time it came out, bought knuckles chaotix, and shadow squadron shortly there after. Also a friend had Doom about 6 months later n we played that. Played a few other games along the way. But the add on sucked. Dreamcast was better, but it was way too underpowered considering what was about to come out, no dvd player of course, n didn't have franchises like nintendo to make up for it. Sega just continued to make the same mistakes they made with the 32x over n over. They got away w the genesis because it was 2 years before the super, but 1 year before the ps2, n with the word of mouth on the internet, that trash was bound to die immediately.

I played Master System at a friend's house back when it was new (as you said - Alex Kid), but Famicom Family had already taken over the mainstream market in my region. My next run in with SEGA home consoles was the Megadrive. Loved it from day one. Back then, SEGA just had a feel that I cannot explain. To me, SEGA is its own thing - games wise. A hardcore, beautiful, indescribable experience. I sound like a 90's advert don't I? (sorry!) but SEGA fans will probably agree with me. Wish I'd had the Dreamcast, but it was not readily available where I live, so had to stick with PS1 then later PS2. By then, SEGA had passed as a hardware manufacturer, and a new era was being ushered in... Thanks for the video!

Genesis/MD for the win with the Dreamcast a very close second. Nothing was more satisfying back in those days as when you accidentally and for the first time grabbed an enemy from behind with Maxx in Streets of Rage 2 and gave it the knee drop... The damage, look and sound both made me laugh and go _"Oof!"_ . Or when I got myself trounced for the first time in an aerial battle in Skies of Arcadia and got my first ever _"DLC"_ by connecting to the game's website to download Aika's, Dreacast branded, lollipop weapon which is still in my VMU to this day.

Great video. I was a Nintendo kid growing up but I did manage to play some SEGA consoles and handhelds over the years via friends. Now as a adult I proudly own a sega genesis. Looking into expanding my video game collection with some of the other consoles. There’s usually one game per system that comes to mind that makes it worth it to own the system (example nights for Sega Saturn) If I had to rank them I’d say this. 1. Sega genesis 2. Sega dreamcast 3. Sega Master System 4. Sega Saturn 5. Sega CD 6. Sega 32x 7. Sega Game Gear 8. Sega Nomad I’m not familiar with pre-master systems consoles or the educational ones. One thing I will say is that even though about the 6th generation of consoles is that even though the dreamcast was their last console, it is by far the best of all the consoles released that region in my opinion (were still friends) I think of the arcade ports (capcom vs snk comes to mind) that came to the system I literally could not tell the difference between the arcade version and the dreamcast version. It was that flawless.

Hard to disagree with your the top 2. Although Sega Dreamcast is my number 1 system of ALL TIME, the Genesis had a much bigger impact. I'd also put the Sega CD above the Saturn mainly because I was not an original Sega Saturn owner. I instead opted for the Sony Playstation. The Sega CD made such an impact on me for a number of reasons and had some really good games on it. I still play it religiously to this day. Good video John and it pretty much mirrors my views. Megadrive is definitely number 1 for me. I picked up a Japanese import in Jan 1990 and it just blew me away at the time. I was a fan of the Amiga at the time (which was a great computer) but the MD was a great step up from there. Sprites were bigger, games ran better and were much closer to the arcade games. I remember first playing Super Hang on, Altered Beast, Ghouls & Ghosts, Super Shinobi and Golden Axe and was just gobsmacked by how good they were. They are still amazing games today and the games library went on to develop into one of the richest and best in video game history. I was a huge fan of the Dreamcast (more so than the Saturn back in the day), but since I picked up a Japanese Saturn, it has become one of my all time favourite consoles. As such my DC is boxed up now and I have the Jp Saturn hooked up to a 29" Sony 4:3 CRT in the kitchen. Love that console! I guess that whilst the DC improves some of the games like Daytona and Sega Rally (with SR2) visually, I still prefer the Saturn versions. Loved the likes of Soul Calibur, Crazy Taxi, F355, MSR, Power Stone 1 & 2 etc. on the DC though and it was one of the few consoles that I queued at a midnight launch for. Overall i'd put my list like this now - Megadrive (including add ons like 32X/MegaCD), Saturn, Dreamcast, GameGear, Master System. I've not played on the Nomad or the SG1000. I put GG ahead of MS, as I never really dabbled with the MS back in the day (was all Spectrum and then Amiga back then), but I owned and loved my GG. I just really like it as a device and the quality of games for a handheld was superb back in the day. I have a Master System now and quite a few games for it. There's certainly some decent stuff on it, and I do like it, but it's the Sega console I want to play the least and look back on the least fondly.

Game Gear has to be my top. Fantastic library with multiple unique regions which makes collecting so fun. So many amazing add ons, and exclusives, and it doesn't break the bank to collect for. Absolutely my favorite system. Dreamcaste second - my favorite system of it's generation Sg-1000 - I don't know why, but this system speaks to me. It's library is so quirky and unique. Love it! Genesis - This was my Sega system growing up. Love it Master System - if the Game Gear didn't have the Master Converter I'd place this much higher. CDX - I listened to music in it more than I played games on it, but I got some great hours of gaming out of it. 32X - the system I kept hooked up for one game for years. Kolibri is one of my go to games to chill and relax. Sega Saturn - I don't have a ton of experience with this system. I recognize it had great games, but I went Atari at the time. Not the best choice

A few years ago my co-worker told me about the Sega Saturn and Game Gear and as I was looking into it, it looked very promising to me and so I managed to get a japan model Saturn and CIB Game Gear on eBay. Sadly though the Saturn games were expensive as hell here in the US so I got a handful from Japan on cheap but it will be difficult to play them in Japanese though but oh well. The game gear was something else, this handheld to me was made for a mature crowd and it had very good games and very cheap too. On a side note, I really had good experiences playing the Genesis and Dreamcast and I pre-ordered at the time the genesis mini and a CIB Dreamcast that was barely used on eBay with a handful of sega arcade games.

CooL list. I normally think of the Sega CD and 32X as extensions of the Sega Genesis, along with the Power Base Converter. Treating the Sega CD as a individual system I’d place it 2nd between (1) The Genesis and (3) the Dreamcast. I’d (if thinking of the Nomad as a separate system) place the Nomad as one notch above the Game Gear, I really like the Game Gear but I prefer the Nomad. However to me the Nomad is an alternate Sega Genesis. I liked both the 32X and SG-1000, but I’d put the 32X a head of the SG-1000, both would be low on my list due to limited number of games, but I actually got a lot of usage out of my 32X during it’s short life, compared to the SG-1000 I’d rank it higher. I do like playing around with the SG-1000, and enjoy it’s version of Zaxxon quite a bit even with a very slow frame rate. I’d rank it lower due to just how many more games I enjoyed on the 32X and even one 32X-CD. Over all my all time top 5 system were (5) Game Cube, (4) Dreamcast, (3) Super Nintendo, (2) original Xbox, and (1) Sega Genesis (including Sega CD) outside of my top 5 it’s hard to pick favourites, but Saturn and original PlayStation would also be high on my list.

Sega Genesis was my favourite console growing up, but the Sega Saturn is a fantastic system as well, lots of games you couldn't get anywhere else and it had The Horde one of the greatest games ever made.

My list would be nearly identical but with Game Gear and Master System switched because I got a Game Gear for Christmas in 93 or 94 with Sonic 2 and Aladdin!

The first console I ever bought was the Sega dreamcast as a teenager. I've been in love ever since. The vmus were cool and so many amazing fighting games. Thanks for the video, sega has always been a favorite of mine too.

I keep wishing that Dark Wizard will show up in a Sega classics collection, or Sega Ages on Switch. Just somewhere.. I have a lot of nostalgia for my Genesis/CD/32X rig that needed its own power strip for 3 wall warts. It was like for car guys who get a nice car and then add stuff to it a little at a time, even though the Genesis will always be the best part of that rig, the fact that we got all this stuff and added them one at a time.. I don't know, it just really further bonded me to the system. It just seemed more MINE all the time. And Dark Wizard was my favorite Sega CD game! I need a new legit copy of that game on some kind of modern hardware. Great video!

I personally would put the genesis and the nomad as a tie for me. I absolutely love the fact that you can play genesis cartridges portably with the nomad, but I also have some great memories with the genesis (also the first console I bought with my own money, even though it came out 12 years before I was born lol). The only gripes I have with the nomad is the price of entry is high because it's rather expensive to get one now. And the screen's blurry. And it's near impossible to find one that doesn't have dead pixels. And it decimates batteries. You know, on second thought, maybe the genesis wins lol.

Sega Genesis is my favorite console of all time. I keep going back to these games. Also Sega master system for Wonder Boy. Sega Cd, Then Saturn, 32X and Dreamcast. I did like the Game Gear that's cool. I'm trying to remember the shinobi game that had like 7 crystals to get in each level and you can do the levels in any order to get them to access the last level. So kind of like the Mega man concept. I forget which Shinobi it was on Game gear.

@@johnhancockretro Yes, they might have improved here and there but i think i saw somewhere that they actually took the license of coleco or something like it to market it for japan, the sg 1000 was a product thought only to sell for the japanese market

In my Sega list it would be hard for me to choose between Genesis, and Saturn for first but probably would go with Saturn at the moment. Probably Sega cd next followed by 32x, Nomad, Game Gear, Dreamcast. I'd probably put Dreamcast up higher but haven't spent quality time with it. 😁👍

I still remember getting my Sega Saturn. One year for Christmas I go with my dad to his buddies and they had a ps1 and Saturn and I had my choice. Fondest memory is hearing the kneck break on tomb raider a sound effect the ps1 was missing can't forget bug or three dirty dwarves. I love my Saturn.

It's so interesting to see how consoles are more or less famous, so to speak, depending on the region. Here, in Spain, for instance, I'm sure that Sega fans would choose Mega Drive and then Master System... MS was as succesful as the NES, believe it or not xD

I feel like the Sega Genesis and Dreamcast are 2 opposite extremes of a spectrum; Sega really brought their A-game on the Genesis, and there were many really amazing 1st-party titles. Contrast that with the Dreamcast, where the real standouts were 3rd-party titles.

Me personally I like the Saturn over the Dreamcast. I came to the Saturn like 12 years after the fact and it had a lot of cool old school FPS’s like power slave quake and duke nuke that I really dug. Also love the first two panzer games. (Never played or could afford SAGA)
