I still play Sega Bass Fishing just because of the fishing controller. It replicates so many of the actions you’d expect of an actual fishing rod.
@thegamelounge659

Yes, nothing has replicated the fishing controller. Nothing has really come close tbh. It’s the same with the Maracas. The Wii and Switch motion controls use a different technology that isn’t as accurate.

In Japan, the Mega Drive had a modem which allowed internet connection, it wasn't focused on online gaming (like the Sattelaview), but offered banking services, live sport scores feed (horse racing and possibly baseball and even F1, I'm only sure about the horse racing). In Brazil, the Mega Drive also had a special banking cart from Bradesco, which allowed for consulting banking info and basic stuff, from home. I also remember hearing that even before that, the Famicom had some sort of connectivity which allowed for live score feed and stuff like that. The Super Famicom had the aforementioned Sattelaview, which as probably the first online service for a console focused on mathplay online, it also had lots of custom and extra content for their main RPGs. But the Western SEGA services during the 16-bit days remedied that across the US, Europe and even Brazil The Saturn was the only console from the 5th generation which had a dedicated peripheral for internet connectivity, it allowed for browsing websites and even creating pages, with a proper mouse and keyboard for that. The console also was the first to feature analog triggers, so many first person shooters and other action games, such as Soviet Strike allows for smooth strafing and moving (using the analog stick), on racing games, it was also the first one , two generations prior which allowed for analog gas/breaking with the triggers. Let's not forget that it was also the first console which tried to focus on online gaming and it also had Dragon's Dream, a Japan-only MMO RPG, ported and supposedly worked cross-platform with its PC counterpart online. I feel that the Saturn, Dreamcast, PS2 and the original Xbox never reached their true potential as far as connectivity and online services/games go, since the internet was in its infancy, but then again, it was probably for the better that this aspect didn't reach farther then. But I remember my older brother playing PES 2005-2006-2007 online a lot against his friend on the PS2, kilometers away from one another, it wasn't perfect, but they had fun with it.

I love your knowledge Roberto. Always so thorough. So much of the above I didn’t know. I think the DC’s native triggers from launch meant more games utilised it on the DC. It’s just a shame there weren’t either 6 face buttons or L+R buttons.
@roberto1519

@@thegamelounge659 True, the Dreamcast also features analog triggers and many racing games take advantage of that. I mentioned the Saturn as it had this feature two generations prior for that to become the standard, which was the 7th gen, and since the video is about things ahead of their time, even being focused on the Dreamcast, I still think the Saturn was further ahead, specially for it being from the 5th generation. I agree, it's a shame the Dreamcast controller lacks buttons, not only that, its Dpad is horrible, specially compared to the amazing Dpad from the Saturn, if you're not familiar with the latter, try it, be that the standard Japanese controller or the 3D analog one. Magazines often said "lacks buttons", it became more and more apparent with cross-platform games, such as Tomb Raider IV and others, where the PS versions benefited from more shoulder buttons and dual analogs, etc.

I think MSR (Metropolis Street Racing) was ahead of it's time. First racing game to include photographed textures of real locations in a racing game. Driving through London was amazing. Plus it played to the clock o if it was night when you played then it'd be night in the game (depending on location of course).
@thegamelounge659
@thegamelounge659 5 ай бұрын
Couldn’t agree more. The reason I didn’t include MSR was I wasn’t sure if it did it first or not, even little detail like the radio station cutting out under a bridge was incredible.

The Fully 3D Environments and Units were all to scale as well. I think it had a New Game Plus option too this was back in 1999 right at the launch of the system.

Steel Battallion had that jankity massive Realistic Mech cockpit controller that was pretty sweet but damn that game was hard and then I think Mechwarrior came close and I feel like 0079 the war for earth deserves a mention, project Nimbus was an Epic Mech Space Battle Game with Gundam Wing Scale and Style Massive battles with lasers everywhere beam cannons giant swords etc etc. Gundam Evolution was excellent as well

Actually Looney Tunes Space Race might had been first cell shaded 3D -game, but because it moved from N64 into DC, it got delayed. So release was around same time as Jet Set Radio. I do think that JSR is even better game, though. Many Dreamcast games were ahead their time, at least visually, often also on game concepts.

Also with Shenmue you could play video games within the video game. Not unlockables. Not you have to put in a code. Not you had to exit the game to the main menu and select another game. Right there in the game. And not just one game but 2! Hang On and Space Harrier. Both arcade perfect. Mind you, at the time of it's release the only arcade perfect version was the Saturn version, which in Japan was still sold in stores at full price as the Saturn was still going strong and in America was only available via The Sega Ages Collection put out in limited quantities by Working Designs (it's like the 3rd rarest W.D. game behind Magic Knight Rayearth and Exile: Wicked Phenomenon). So to get an arcade perfect version of a rare or full priced game for free was a big deal.
@thegamelounge659
@thegamelounge659 6 ай бұрын
Yes absolutely, I was going to mention this although outside of Yakuza I can’t think of many games with classic arcade games built in. I guess not as many companies have the Arcade legacy like SEGA. Maybe NAMCO perhaps.

@@thegamelounge659 I'm sure it made it as simple as it gets having Yu Suzuki being the person who made Shenmue as he's the one who made Hang On and Space Harrier. If anyone had that source code to port it to dreamcast, it would be him. Also Shenmue 2 had Outrun, which also was Yu Suzuki.

DC was ahead of the game, it was clearly in the PS2/GCN/XB generation but it was more contemporary with PS1 and N64 The whole 'second screen' and online aspect made it way ahead of the curve
@thegamelounge659

Oh 100% it was part of that gen. The fact it launched first and got a lot of ‘easy’ upscaled PS1 ports meant it got compared to that console but there was no contest. The XBOX was a way ahead power wise though. I can’t imagine Half-Life 2 on the DC.

SEGA was always ahead of their time, and unfortunately, it always cost them. Gamegear was vastly superior to Gameboy. In fact, it was more advanced than the GBA, in some aspects, until the SP version. However, it came too early in battery technology, and the lower power consumption of GB was more appealing. The Nomad was doing what Switch is doing today, but again, battery issues killed it, even though it was super advanced. SEGA CD could have been a killer app, but they made too many FMA games instead of amazing 16 but games with superior sound quality. Imagine Streets of Rage 2 on SEGA CD.

Of course time and time again, it doesn't matter how ahead of the curve you are, or how powerful the hardware, which one had more games, how many of those games are worth playing. Time has proven that when it comes to handheld, Nintendo always delivers on the games, Gameboy has a fantastic library, Switch is dominating with the same mentality.

its a little bit odd that you went out of your way to mention that Quake 3 still has active servers, but you act as though PSO is not still online. You even mention that BB is around and offline multiplayer for the Cube. The truth is they are all still online. You can play PSO online on PC, DC, Xbox and Gamecube. In my opinion you are better off owning PSO Ep 1&2 plus on the Gamecube. It has more content as well as all of original Dreamcast Version 2. If you want to play online, its not gonna be cheap for the Cube, or the Dreamcast really. Both options are here though.

@@hazy33 well the memory card - no one used them for their mini games. "top games" on the dreamcast include RE Code Veronica, Sonic Adventures, Virtua Tennis, Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Phantasy Star Online, House of the Dead 2, Quake, Power Stone and Qbert. Was it ahead of its time in some ways? yeah, I guess? Xbox had superior online, GCN had better exclusives, PS2 had everything and more. N64 had better games, and PS1 blew everything out of the water - (I include both generations because it doesn't compete in either generation). It just wasn't a good console. It was mediocre at everything it did, which sucks, because I really want to want one, but I cant even think of 1 game to justify buying the console.
