I indeed remember playing this from a demo disc from the Official Dreamcast Magazine. I was curious to try it and ended up playing it for like four straight hours one evening in highschool. I had no clue there was a sequel, or even that one had been considered. On a side note, that magazine was awesome. The Dreamcast was such an amazing console.

This was a fun, simple game that I enjoyed on my Dreamcast. And it was free, so I couldn't complain. I probably have multiple copies of it from various demo discs and Web Browsers. I never played the sequel, nor have I heard of it till now.

I have to confess, it's when you talk about these series I've never even heard of that wind up being some of my favorite videos. This one, Bounder, Mr. Nutz, it's so fun learning the full history of something I'm going into completely blind. In regards to Sega Swirl...I feel like this is one of those super rare cases where you could say "I hope it gets a mobile game" and it seems like the most reasonable outcome. I mean like you kinda said in the video, this would fit right at home on the app store, and the e-mail type thing would work marvelously with back and forth texting. Like seriously, Sega Swirl 3 on mobile phones. I'd play the heck out of that.

Having never grown up with a Dreamcast (sad but true), I completely missed out on the Sega Swirl train. Looks pretty fun, and I'm glad the tradition of great built-in games on the console, like Snail Maze and Chu Chu Rocket, continued with this one (this was built into the console, right?). Also, this looks and seems to play a lot like one of my fave PC casual classics, Collapse. Just replace the swirls with squares and you wouldn't be too far off!

Hey Slope, PLEASE do a Complete History of WipEout!! I watched your Complete History of Burnout and you mentioned WipEout a few times, and I am still playing it to this day!! The way you cover the entire history of a particular game series in such detail is exactly what I have always wanted to see, rather than just a collection of gameplay footage from each game. And you're clearly a fan of WipEout, so PLEASE do a history on it! Who's with me?

If you want to do good at it, you've gotta take some of the single negative scoring swirls to make bigger chains. It won't seem worth it at first, for just a few, but, you can join like all the reds for instance on the whole board if you want to by taking the point loss on the individuals and connecting it all, and when it's that many it's really worth it, you're score will sky rocket.

Really miss Sega Swirl, something about the Dreamcast version kept my interest despite how much I'm bad with puzzle games. Never even knew about the sequel till now, sad it never had another release though now I'm curious how you managed to get a copy. I suppose a fan might have restored it and spread it online, one can hope. Really surprised Sega doesn't just make a Sega Swirl re release two pack on PC and Mobile, complete with the fancy graphics, it would fit in pretty well these days.

I remember just having the demo for Swirl and it was super addictive. I always wanted to get the full version but never got around to it, and then when GTA came out we all kinda just lost interest in the Dreamcast, and we would all soon have Xboxes and Gamecubes as well which just left the Dreamcast dustier and dustier.

I'd say you guys were luckier in the UK to get it free on a demo disc. They crammed into the SEGA Smash Pack for us yanks, we had to pay for it. My brother downloaded the game for my PC back in the day and I poked around with a memory editor to lock my score multiplier at something insane then proceeded to get a ridiculously score for every match. Next thing I knew I got an email, perhaps from the man himself, congratulating me on my high score and asking if I obtained it legitimately. I was baffled because I was not playing online and I never gave it permission to send emails on my behalf. It just secretly sent emails from the default email configured in Outlook Express and didn't even prompt me to submit. This is exactly the kind of security vulnerability viruses were exploiting back then and I thought it was a terribly unprofessional way for an "online" game to submit high scores. I never intended to have my illegitimate scores submitted against everyone else's legitimate scores. The fact that I ACCIDENTALLY exploited my way to the top of the leaderboards tells me that there was very little consideration for protecting the legitimacy and even the seemingly believable high scores could have been fakes.

What are you talking about? Sega Swirl is a copy of the "SameGame". First release in Japan as "Chain Shot" for Fm-7 and Fm-8 in 1985. Most Known Version could be the SNES one also called "SameGame" by Hudson in 1996. I Always wondered if there is no Copyright to these Type of Games. The Same Goes for the Android Games Copying the Bust-a-Move (Puzzle Bobble) game a dozen of times. The Only Interesting thing is the Swirl 2 i never heard of it will research that one.

Tremor Entertainment was going to work on Half-life for Dreamcast? Was this before Gearbox took over?

Yes. We fought to do the port, but nothing ever came of it. We ported Quake to the Dreamcast in 3 or 4 days as a way to show that we knew what were doing. Unfortunately, we were an unknown quantity. To risky for such a big title to bet on a company that was not established.

The game was called "full Life" , but because they didn't finish the game , it then became "half life".. WHAT!!?!!

I love seeing the cooperation between all of you. Some how, it makes it feel greater than it already is. That, and in America finding true cooperation has become rather difficult of late 😂

I can't find anything about Valve wanting to choose the developers of the Dreamcast port, Dan. All I've read is that the first attempt only had three days with the source code, the other was for delayed reasons and one saying something about changing markets. Great video though

+Jamie Williamson i got told this by the developer himself via a skype call which is why you will not find this information elsewhere.

Daniel Ibbertson It does seem questionable. With the development going on from two teams by Sierra and with the decline of the Dreamcast could also be big factors in this.

+Jamie Williamson ahhhh yeah i agree. The dreamcast was only around for a year or so before devs decided to move away. The holding back by valve would had delayed this game until it was too late to come out in my opinion

Daniel Ibbertson Shame Valve delayed it especially that Sierra already knew what they were doing and already working with then on the expansions.

We never had the source code to Half-Life. If memory serves, it was Quake (Quake 2? Memory gets foggy after almost 20 years) that we ported to the Dreamcast in 3 days as an attempt to show we had the chops to take on the task of porting Half-Life. Tough for Valve to take a chance on a company that was not well established. We took Railroad Tycoon and did a beautiful port for it.

Unlike Half Life 3, Sega Swirl 2 ever actually existed.

Basically Sega Swirl might as well be the mother of the Match-Up genre. If so, i don't know whether i should feel happy for the release of the Bejeweled saga or be angered because Candy Crush exists. God i hate that game.
