Congratulations you are the first contractor on youtube that understands how drain pipes work.. Far too many are wrapping the pipe in cloth. A recipe for disaster.

But what about the fabric he used atop the rock? Surely that can clog and just leave water sitting there

THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO.....BUT....WHEN YOU SET THE BLACK PERFORATED PIPE IN THE DITCH THE GREEN LINE ON THE PIPE IS THE EXACT TOP OF THE PIPE....WHICH WILL THEN SET THE PERFORATION CUT OUTS EXACTLY AT THE BOTTON....TO GIVE THE PIPE 100% EFFICIENCY.....YOU DID NOT SET THE GREEN LINE AT 12:00.....YOU SET THE GREEN LINE AT 3:00 WHICH MAKES THE PERFORATIONS LESS EFFECTIVE.....AGAIN THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO.....I HAVE BEEN A BUILDER FOR OVER 50 YEARS....AND HAVE MADE THIS MISTAKE IN THE PAST MYSELF.....PLEASE RESPOND

I am planning to build my own 3ft tall 50ft long retaining wall using the 18x12x8 block. The trench will be 18 inches wide and about 14 inches deep. 6 inches of #57 gravel base, and 1 full block buried. My question is should I use #57 for the base, or crusher run gravel? I want to avoid getting 2 different materials if I dont necessary need to. Price different for my area is $40 for #57 and $38 for crusher run per cubic yard, so not much difference in price. Also, is 2 inches of granite sand recommended for easy leveling of first row?
@danedeturk9708
@danedeturk9708 Жыл бұрын
Personally I’d go with the crusher run. Granite sand should work well as your first row bedding layer. Regardless it sounds like you’ll build it well.
@danedeturk9708

It’s easier to level and compact crusher run compared to #57.

The rock act like a filter and also allow the water to pass through alot faster than dirt, doesn't it make more sense to put the stone on top of the pipe and the pipe directly on bottom above the fabric? Because with the stone on bottom of the pipe it seems that the water will directly sink pass the pipe as the stone allows easier sinkage. Which raises a question why put a pipe if the only way the pipe will work is when the water completely fills the stone section about a foot. Doesn't make sens
@daTroost
@daTroost 6 жыл бұрын
I suppose you do want some space below the pipe to catch crap that is not filtered, this probably keeps the pipe cleaner from the finer dirt, but maybe only 1 layer of small filler stones high? Like you said, more stones over the pipe and then that cloth should go over the filler stones to stop dirt from entering the stone filter area...

"clean drain rock." Not for long... that "filtration bed" is going to fill up with sediment after a couple of rains and be useless. What you need is a "gravel burrito," full wrap of drain rock enclosed within filtration fabric. Uses a little more fabric but it's a job done properly.

I was wondering about that. I live in Florida where the sand is like flour and it rains 6 inches in a storm. I guess hope for the best.

Why use fabric at all?! Doesnt it end up clogging ??
@Lumbrjak1
@Lumbrjak1 Жыл бұрын
@@MathCuriousity Sure, but imagine the alternative, which is fine soil which is solid all the way through. Once the soil is saturated, there is little incentive for the water to move in any direction. If you have a fabric envelope around your perf pipe, with a gravel interior, you can think of that as a "low pressure zone." the fabric is full of soil, but on the other side of the fabric is space for the water to migrate to, and move away from the area. Movement will be relatively slow, but the hydrostatic pressure builds up in the soil, and providing that 'air space' around your perf pipe gives that pressure a place to go.
