Watch Grand Seiko Master Watchmaker, Mr. Shun Murayama, assemble a Seiko Spring-Drive Movement at Little Treasury Jewelers, October 21, 2015. The context is a watch event celebrating Grand Seiko, hence the background chatter. This is just a demonstration movement, so don't worry, it won't be inside anyone's timepiece.

That clown in the background who tried to challenge the GS master watch-maker by saying that Bulova made a sweeping hand quartz is misinformed. That UHF ticks at 16 bps.

The Precisionist line of Bulova, which is quartz, does indeed have a sweeping secong hand. I believe its the only quartz movement that offers that!
@beardymcbeardface69
@beardymcbeardface69 4 ай бұрын
@@lucgeoffrion1970 The difference is in the definition of "sweeping". The GS definition of sweeping is in the most literal sense, in that the second hand sweep is stepless. The sweeping hand of the Bulova might look like it is smooth and stepless, with no stops and starts, but it does indeed stop and start, just so frequently that it gives the appearance of being steplessly smooth. In contrast to Spring Drive, which is sweeping in the most literal sense, steplessly with no stops and starts, at all. The second hand in Spring Drive watches is being speed regulated 8 times per second, but never actually stops and starts to do so. The movement is constant. The guy in the background attempting to correct the GS master watchmaker, was in fact absolutely wrong, because he was disputing the point that quartz watches are stepped in their movement. He wrong.

@@neodelphi Having tested a lot of watches on timegraphers, I did notice several things. While brand new submariners amazingly get consistent readings of - 1 to 0 and occasional +1 s/d readings on all positions, all the older submariners (2-3 year old watches) deviate heavily at anti-complementary angles by some going as high as +4 seconds. While rolexes have very accurate movements and their internal superlative standards are true, it is not uncommon to have to regulate and readjust them again after years of wearing. I’ve yet to find a 9S calibre of any age that deviated more than +/ - 3 s/d. Take this with a grain of salt though since the sample size is not great enough to form actual conclusions. But…The thing about Seiko and Grand Seiko is that they perform way better than what’s on the sheet tables. Don’t forget. The 9S is a 36000 bph movement. One of the most accurate movements where only a few other watch brands like Zenith have mastered. 10 beat movements have a much sturdier hairspring where amplitudes are much less affected by external factors leaving less room for error, giving greater accuracy than 8 and 6 beat movements.

8 times per second is the rate at which control over the wheel speed is computed, and it is related to the same kind of crystal fewquency as a 'quartz' watch, but the combination of the energy delivered to the coils to power the electronics, and an 'extra' load that is applied that can slow the 'generator' wheel, is determined 8 times per second...probably a 'frequency-locked' and 'phase-locked-loop' control system.

sounrds right. 72*60*60 = 259200 259200/8 = 32400 which is frequency of the quartz (gs may have their own quartz crystal that vibrates at a different rate as usual quartzes)

There is no reason for it to be less accurate than a 'quartz' movement, as long as it stays fully-wound; the control system only requires that the wheel guarantees to be #able to rotate faster... as long as that condition is met, the control system should be capable of perfect synchrony with the quartz crystal frequency.

This seems very similar to the Tissot electronic drive that also had a constant sweep second hand. I had one that I was given by my uncle that he bought in the early seventies. Unfortunately the coils are now broken so I doubt it can be repaired.
@avronaut
@avronaut 4 ай бұрын
There is no similarity there. The Tissot electronics are based on the tuning fork first brought to market by Bulova. A battery is required for this. The clocks do not have high accuracy because the tuning fork only oscillates at 300 Hz and not the 32768 Hz of a quartz. Of course, the pointer wasn't really sweeping either. It was driven purely mechanically by the tuning fork in 300 partial steps.

It would take too much energy to make a traditional battery powered quartz watch rotate smoothly. The accutron or whatever, it ticks, just at way more vph. It looks smooth but it's actually ticking. The spring drive is totally smooth. I think it's the brake that regulates everything and allows for a smooth second hand.
@Surfingolas1
@Surfingolas1 5 жыл бұрын
The main spring powers a tiny generator that applies a charge to a quartz crystal and a tiny Integrated circuit which checks the oscillation of the quarts crystal against the second hand position 8 times a second.. It then applies or releases a magnetic brake. It's like setting the cruise control on your car and then just using the brake to maintain a constant speed. It doesn't tick because there is no escapement unwinding the main spring a beat at a time. It is constantly unwinding. Just to expand on what you said😁

@@Surfingolas1 you sound like you know what you are talking about and I have a question, I am believing that these spring drives have a rotor in them and if so does that help wind the main spring or is it only wound up manually every 70 hrs or so, guess I will find out myself in the next week or so when my Marinemaster arrives, asking because I cant seem to find any info that details anything about the rotor.
@Surfingolas1
@Surfingolas1 4 жыл бұрын
@@winstonsharpe4080 I don't own one but I am fascinated by them so cheers to you for taking the plunge. I believe in that respect it is a traditional automatic watch. The movement of your wrist turns a rotor which winds the main spring. It is the energy produced by the unwinding of the main spring that powers the IC and the quarts oscillation.
@winstonsharpe4080
@winstonsharpe4080 4 жыл бұрын
@@Surfingolas1 Thanks for your reply, yes , I have become fascinated with the spring drive also, I am looking for a few things from a watch, accuracy and weight are the two main ones and the Marinemaster looks like it is going to give both. I have been wearing a Tissot T touch Solar Expert for about 6 years now but it is playing up, the lightest watch I've ever worn being Titanium and the most accurate being quartz, only ever adjusted the time changing for daylight saving but I dont want another watch with a lot of electronics and settings so hoping the spring drive will be a fairly simplistic timepiece and I guess with owning one it shouldn't be that hard to work it out, I am like a lil kid waiting for Santa to arrive xmas morning hanging out till it arrives haha!
@Surfingolas1
@Surfingolas1 4 жыл бұрын
@@winstonsharpe4080 yeah you can't get more accurate than a quartz watch because of the law of averages. The more oscillations the more accurate a watch is. A quartz crystal oscillates at like 32800 hz. Even the most high end mechanical watches oscillate at 10 hz. So a $10 quartz watch is more accurate than a 30k Rolex. That's why the spring drive is an awesome movement. You get the accuracy of quartz with the charm and craftsmanship of mechanical with a true sweeping second hand.

Longevity wise it's designed to be repaired so as long as they make parts it will be easily serviced by them. There's always a risk that a manufacturer may go out of business but considering how big seiko is and how long they've been around they're about as likely to go bust as rolex is. Of note is that rolex only services up to 30 years whilst the spring drive has been pledged to be serviceable for at least 40 years.

This watchmaker is incorrect. The Precisionist movement by Bulova, which is quartz, has a sweep seconds hand and the battery on my Precisionist lasts two years or more. The watchmaker is 100% correct. His definition of a sweeping hand, which is the most literal definition, is that it should be stepless. The Bulova sweeping hand is not stepless, while the Spring Drive sweeping hand is. Watch enthusiasts refer to a second hand being sweeping because they *_appear_* smooth, but rarely are they actually perfectly smooth.

This one looks like a chronometer which is a bit pricier than the day/date only movement of the Snowflake and could go into the $10-20k range but nowhere close to $70,000.

I love Seiko watches but there’s no way I’m going to pay $5,000+ for a Quartz watch. I’ll keep my 6105,thank you.

LOL Spring Drive is not a "quartz watch"! Quartz watch = quartz timing is used to *_ADVANCE_* the movement. Spring Drive = quartz timing is used to *_REGULATE_* the unwinding of a traditional mechanical movement. These are *_RADICALLY_* different concepts. The Spring Drive provides a completely stepless smooth sweeping second hand, from an otherwise regular mechanical watch, with quartz accuracy, yet no battery or capacitor and with no torque jarring stops and starts, whilst using a completely frictionless electromagnetic brake on the glide wheel (which replaces the escapement). *_RADICALLY_* different concepts! To refer to Spring Drive as a, "quartz watch", is to demonstrate that you have no clue what you're talking about.

whoever buys THIS watch will have to take it to a REPUTABLE servie center and have it oiled and greased. not ONE single pivot point was oiled, and NO grease was applied. shame. :'(

Michael Ponomareff - my 2005 Spring Drive SNR005 has been working flawlessly going 13th year without ever being serviced. Accuracy is still like new within 1 SECONDS/WEEK. My Official Certified Chronometer watch gains 5 SECONDS a DAY. Reserved power is exactly 72 hours which is far better than 42 hours of my Official Certified Chronometer watch. After having all kinds of watches over half a century, the Spring Drive is the most satisfied and the best watch technology because of its unparalleled performance in all areas: accuracy, precision, long reserved hours, absolutely quiet gliding second hand like time flows. the dependability of telling time accurately and it even works after 3 days off wrist (Weekends) or whatever I'm in a mood for a different watch. The Spring Drive is the king of all watches that no other watch can come close regardless of price range.

This is just plain ugly. I don't how much branding went into making people think this is real artisanship when it's clearly just electronics. No matter how you look at it it's just a really well decorated quartz. Sorry for being negative but it seems to me people are going crazy for this thing for no real reason.

You know, I just wanted to type something really negative about your comment, but I just didn't in the hope that in the 4 months since you wrote this paragraph you somehow got educated about why a) your statement is not true, b) the Spring Drive is truly magnificent and c) it is crazy that it still can be had for so little money.

Yeah I'm gonna go with otobotrecords here and hope you learned why and where you were wrong. The Spring Drive movement is automatic and regulated by a quartz, not quartz driven. It has to be regulated by a quartz because there is no escapement built in the watch, else it wouldn't need a quartz right? It doesn't use a battery because it generates the small current needed from the main spring, just like an automatic uses elastic energy stored in a spring to regulate itself and drive the hands. So the movement is a hybrid of mechanical and quartz movements but definitely not a quartz driven movement like you're used to.

This is a concept of next level technology is something Swiss has tried and failed at and took well over 20 years to develop while most Swiss watches in same price range dropped in off shelf eta's in outsourced cases, many from china. The same people who bash it would be bragging non stop.had it been made by rolex/p.p Seiko also won the most accurate pure mechanical movement in Swiss competitions to the point where the Swiss got rid of the competition out of embarassment.

I generally don't reply on KZfaq videos as I don't wish to be labelled as some keyboard warrior. I am looking at getting into watch repair and collecting myself for about the last 2 weeks. Prompted by a very difficult search to find someone that can restore my 7016-8001 flyback. Even from my short time looking, even I understand that this is not a Quartz movement.
