Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is surrounded by buzz, and with good reason. It's a From Software instant classic, a game of stealth, brutal combat, and punishing difficulty.
I also don't like it.
For those of you who haven't mashed the dislike button or flown into an angry comment rage from this video's title alone, sit back and listen as I explain how Sekiro is a very good game that's absolutely not for me.

Cannot agree more. But I will say that "getting gud" in dark souls 1 (my first souls game), was not terribly fun. It wasn't until I was finally beat Capra demon and started making work of the depths that I started to really get into it. There's a chance Jim could pull through and end up liking Sekiro, but other than that, I respect the perspective he gave.

One more agreement. I never understood “git gud” until Bloodborne. I was having enough fun and wanted to learn the story that it was worth pouring my life into. “Git gud” is only viable if you’re enjoying it.

That's 100% fair. Like I posted above, as long as the arguments are about the art choices and content and there's lots there to argue about then I'm happy and have at it - VS arguing about what's "acceptable" in GaaS scamming and monetizing (spoiler: none of it is, ever) and people calling others haters because they dont accept scams. A full game without any Activision garbage thankfully. The rest is subjective and everyone is allowed to like/dislike what they want - as long as it isn't some scheme cooked up to scam consumers then they are not allowed to support that while saying they also support consumers, as those are polar opposites.

I do not like any of the Souls type of games, due to having a big learning curve and all of the repetition and dying. I tried to give them a chance, but it becomes such a chore and I do not get a satisfaction by completing something very hard in the games. However, the lore and the design of the bosses monsters and levels of the games are really really good. Its something different and really well made. That is why this genre has the success it has. Unfortunately the difficulty of the games are a real turn off for me and would be nice if they had a "casual" play, so people like me can actually enjoy everything else within the game.

@raging_beaver
@raging_beaver 5 жыл бұрын
@Zvonimir Komar Honestly, what more do you need? Sekiro, even though you get the grappling hook and "stealth", which supposedly are to give you more ways to play the game through, is actually much more rigid in terms of combat. You have to parry, you have to block, you have to jump and jump kick, you have to use your prosthetic tools etc. I remember playing DS3 through without using shields, parries, blocking, spells etc. Just my light attack button, the dodge and estus buttons and the analog sticks. I COULD HAVE BEEN using weapon arts, strong attacks, bows etc. but I wasn't FORCED to do it. I doubt you'd be able to finish Sekiro that way and this opinion is based purely on my own experience of the game. Granted, didn't finish it yet, I spent around 10-15h in it so far though. Sure, I'll probably finish the game at some point, maybe even do it more than one time, however I still believe DS3 and even Bloodborne to an extent to be vastly superior products and mainly because of the perceived freedom in approach to combat.

Rating it objectively really doesn't do anything. Like someone saying that they find that Sekiro has Soulsbourne combat. That doesn't say anything. And, as soon as you put a rating on something, it becomes subjective. People just throw those words around without knowing what they mean. It is similar to the people who describe things that are already literal with the word literally. If someone says a game is terrible, no one should ever have to specify that it is objectively or subjectively terrible. It is obviously subjective. Just because one person doesn't like a game doesn't affect any other's view on a game. That is just their own view on the game. Now, if I said I didn't like Sekiro because it was a first person shooter, that would be objectively wrong.

Same. Haven't beat it yet but I'm right at the end with the sword saint. And it feels like work at this point, rather than fun. And I'm just like Jim when it comes to the souls type games. Just look at my screen name lolz. Sekiro sadly bad vibed me for a lot of reasons. Where's our deep armor customization??? LAME! Where's coop/multiplayer??? LAME! Where's our mass variety of weapons??? LAME! Why is everything so stealth based??? LAME! Why are soo many bosses a slog to fight? Particularly the headless, ichan warriors or whatever they are called, and certain bosses like the demon of hatred or the mad bull??? LAME! Why can't I roll dodge??? LAME! Why can I throw butterflies at enemies? Such a useless ability lol. Spirit emblems are super plentiful that it makes me wonder why I can even buy them. Tons of items are pretty useless. Same for combat arts. I only use hardly any and the few I do use... Like two maybe? They want you to replay the game over and over for bigger challenges and they are not so much challenging but rather frustrating. And of course the reward sucks. Beating most enemies in this game doesn't feel as rewarding as my experiences in souls games of the past. Also you're stuck as sekiro. A pretty dull ninja dude to be honest. I like it better in past souls games where YOU are the player you choose to be. Sekiro is a very meh dude who I don't really relate to very well... I do think it's harder than previous souls games though. In those games you had options to take on your enemies. Shields, magic, rolls, ranged weapons, parry, weapon variety, Knocking em off cliffs lol, doing something in the level that makes the boss easier or whatever... In this you just gotta be a parry master and some stealth stuff can also help. Button timing deflect combos being 90% of how you win battles is a bit repedative after a while. And I know the occasional step on their spear animation is needed but still... It's all counter this counter that. Amazing ninja game. Weak souls game. But that's just my opinion... Based on some opinions and facts about the game. I liked it okay but it could have been better. I give it around a 7 or 8 out of 10

Not proud to admit it but this game is too hard for me. I've quit it. Coming from turned based games my 47 year old reactions are not upto it. Think I beat 14 bosses/mini bosses including butterfly but running into one brick wall after another is not my idea of fun. My job is enough of a grind without having to grind in my free time. Enjoy the lore and game design, 100% respect the developers rights to build the game as they like. Real shame, 10% easier and I'd see this through to the end. I'm high level in my normal gaming arenas, producing guides etc but this level of twitch/reaction gameplay would require an inordinate amount of time and effort from me at this time of my life. I might get some heavy flak for this but here goes... *Ahem* the way Jim feels about sekiro is the way I feel about megaman 11. And,(here's where the fun begins), I also believe I may have enjoyed mighty no 9 more than megaman 11. HEAR ME OUT THO, while the people(or, more accurately, person) behind the shitshow of mighty no 9's marketing and advertising and gameplay development is an ass, I was able to see what I believe could have been a legitimate successor to rock in beck's character and "fighting" style. 11 isn't bad, but I've played enough megaman style games with more interesting gameplay to believe that I wanted more out of the game and the way the different upgrades worked in mighty felt more varied and interesting to me. There's plenty of things to be said about what they were promising in mighty that we didn't get, but I appreciated the different experience I got with it more than 11. However, 11 is still a better built game. Sorry for the essay and I'd like to say more but I'll do it in a reply

As a fan of many Survival Horror games, including “Silent Hill 2”, “The Evil Within”, “ZombiU”, and almost all of the “Resident Evil” games, Jim’s experience with Sekiro sounds like my initial experience with “Alien: Isolation”. I played it for a couple of hours and can safely say that “Alien: Isolation” looks like a very well designed game and I am glad that it got an established fanbase with positive reviews. But I myself just found the Amnesia-style emphasis on stealth to be both unfamiliar and tedious, plus it felt punishing to loose so much progress just from briefly mishandling one of its confusing mechanics. Now I am sure I could have eventually learned to “git gud” just like I did with “Bloodborne” and those aforementioned other Survival Horror games I played. But I simply was not enjoying “Alien: Isolation” as much and this, combined with my Xbox 360 becoming temperamental on me at around the same time I got my new PS4 anyway, made me feel unmotivated to try going back to the game and overcoming the initial learning curve. Yet I am glad that “Alien: Isolation” was made, especially for the fans disappointed with the fiasco that was Colonial Marines. So I can sympathize with Jim feeling that way with Sekiro.

Thing is, parries in Sekiro are mostly easier and more forgiving than they were in Dark Souls. While there existed a partial parry in DS, you would usually get splatted if you miss it. In Sekiro, the need to time both your and your opponent's animations isn't as strict and a slightly mistimed parry is still likely to result in a block.

The story elements are just boring I dont care, the game is great, fromsoft quality, but its just not my cup of tea. I just cant get into it, I made it to the guardian ape, and rin spirit lady. Tried fighting her like 5 times, realized I hadnt even made a dent or gotten remotley close to a victory, realized there was some kind of guide or formula to beat the enemy and I would have to look it up or spend 3 hours playing guess what works which I dont have time for so just look it up, and beat the enemy. Regardless of whether someone plays Soulsborne games or not, it’s right to say that enjoyment of a product doesn’t require one to be a fan of the entirety of its maker’s work. Particular tastes are in fact particular. Belonging to one person. And, you don’t need a huge time investment to a game before deciding if it ain’t your thing or it’s the next best thing to breathing. What you’re talking is dedication, and that’s fine, but not even Soulsborne games require dedication to decide whether or not they’re worth playing. OP said they didn’t have the time or patience for a grind, which is fair. Many parts of Soulsborne games can be grindy, but the idea is that you shouldn’t have to for any game if the game is balanced enough.

It's definitely my favourite FROM game mechanically, though it'd be nearly impossible to surpass Souls on lore and Sekiro definitely doesn't IMO. I do think that it isn't necessarily better than Nioh however (whilst certainly not being worse), though they really are very different games despite notionally being similar. TBH I reckon Sekiro does share a lot with Nioh in terms of having easy fodder and difficult bosses (on your first runs of each) though, which I wish was slightly evened a bit. Sekiro's idea of minibosses is great though, mostly unnecessary if you find them too difficult (not that I did), but evens it out just that little bit.

Theres far more combat options in seikiro than a souls game. Before you say hurr different builds well thats different builds that you spec for that unless you go past the lvl balanced for pvp. Even then its dodge hit hit dodge hit hit, Parry if youre good hit hit, and if your magic throw spears till boss dies. Sekiro has more variety in combat with just controlling a single character. At the start its pretty limited ill admit but after progressing it starts opening up a lot of new options. Boss fights arent just dodge wait for opening to hit. The game isnt just parrying, you have to time your counters, dodges, parrys and jump dodges. You just dont get that from a souls game.

I've always played the "Havel Turtle + the biggest sword I could find"-style in the Souls Games. Therefore I really struggled in Bloodborne, but somehow made it through. However I rarely go back and play it again, because I'm just not good at this faster playstyle. But for some reason, Sekiro's playstyle worked almost instantly for me. I just love the flow of the game, it feels great to get the parries just right (I almost never parried in the Soulsborne games, propably less than 20 times in all five games), and to overwhelm these though and big enemys with nothing else than my tiny little Katana. The same goes for the (missing) RPG-features. I loved to test out hundreds of different combinations of armors and weapons in the Soulsborne series but for some reason, I'm not missing these things at all. Quite the contrary actually, I like that you perfect your playstyle the whole game, getting better and better at it. I completed Sekiro in under a week (currently in NG3+, struggling against the last Boss), faster than any other From Software game. Not because it is easier, but because I almost never felt frustrated with this game. Things never felt overwhelming, just challenging. However I totally get it, if you don't like this playstyle, then Sekiro is not for you. But you should still try it out, even if you never parried once in The Soulsborne games. Because like me, you might be surprised by yourself.

I like that they deliberately moved away from the established mechanics from previous games to keep with the theme of the new one. (In folklore, i don't know much classical Japanese history) Shinobi and Samurai didn't use shields, they had a sword that they trusted with their lives in every fight. In Sekiro, the towershield enemies are some of the most frustrating low-level enemies because they don't attack so you don't have anything to reflect against them. If Sekiro gave you a shield, it would just encourage that sort of play style which would absolutely destroy the authentic sword-clashing pacing in combat.

In a sense it felt more like real fencing, because you would be just out of the reach of your opponent and move within it only when you wanted to attack. You'd hit the enemies always with the very tip of your weapon. When you learned the reach and arcs of your moveset it was really great feeling and enabled you to do some pretty cool stuff. I liked the combination of locked and unlocked play (lock-on toggle) in Demon's Souls and Dark Souls 1. Sekiro is not a bad game. In fact it might be the most polished game From Software has ever made. However, to me it feels like a combination of rhythm and memory game, so I don't really like it that much. I'm pretty good at parrying in Dark Souls and Bloodborne, but most of the time I tried to defeat enemies by other means because it was more fun. Not to mention you didn't have to parry every single attack, so you could always choose the move you wanted to punish with a parry.

Tyynymyy that’s one thing I’ve noticed about people who don’t like Sekiro, people just don’t wanna have to parry all the time and that’s an understandable reason but tbh the combat in Sekiro feels so alive because of that element of there being a rhythm. It’s almost like a dance between you and the enemy as you switch from offense to defense seamlessly to wear down the enemy and overpower them. So far one of my fav combat systems in recent games

Alien yeah it’s funny seeing people who haven’t played any souls games before actually doing better early on in Sekiro as opposed to souls veterans who have that muscle memory of pressing dodge every time you’re about to take damage. One thing Jim is right about is that Sekiro definitely wants to be played a certain way and if it’s not your style then you’re kinda forced to learn how to parry and counter sweeps and stabs and all of those things

@@Aliens1337 I have already beaten the game, so it's not like I gave up on it easily. I really tried to learn to like the combat and at some point I will definitely give it another try. Then again I didn't like Dark Souls II or III that much either (albeit because of different reasons), so it might be I'm just super picky. However, many of the things I enjoyed in Souls games / Bloodborne are not present in Sekiro or at least they are greatly overshadowed by other mechanics or design choices. I play bunch of games that are different from Souls and I enjoy them very much, so it might be the Sekiro's style of combat just isn't for me. Then there is the lack of freedom. The developers want you to play the certain way with a set character and weapon. Albeit the tools are a cool addition, finding a new attire or weapon felt often much more exciting. Overall the games felt more personal.

However, after a while I just found it to be a real slog having to go through the same rigmarole to get to a main boss never mind beat them and overall this game just lacks that addictive feel the Soulsbourne games have. Its good that From Software tried something different with Sekiro and kudos to them for that and the game does have some aspects that I liked but with the Souls and Bloodborne, I could pick up the game and not want to put it down but with Sekiro after an hour or two I felt like taking a break and that was that for me, it just didn't have that same instant appeal. I'm just glad FromSoft is doing original games again and I hope they keep doing more IPs and different types of gameplay than copies of the Soul series.
@Top-Lip
@Top-Lip 5 жыл бұрын
Except, this game isnt original though, and it might be a "new IP", but it's basically just a rehash of Tenchu, and there's already been 8 tenchu games. Its also got too many generic tropes from modern games aswell, so it feels very watered down. Not saying Sekiro is bad, it's very good, but it's not unique at all. Dark Souls was original, you might not have liked it, but in its time, there wasn't really any other major releases like Dark Souls except Dragons Dogma, which is still a vastly different game. Nioh, ninja gaiden and tenchu have already done this type of game before, and Tenchu has already been milked by Activision in the past, with way too many sequels. The assassins creed style stealth/assassination gameplay is nothing that hasn't already been tirelessly exhausted this last generation and even the generation before. The irony is, this game is nowhere near as original as souls or bloodborne, especially the latter. There are already many games like Sekiro, Bloodborne actually has an extremely unique context and there aren't really any other games like it at all, yet it stays true to from's style. Sekiro is almost a copy paste of souls aswell, since the two main story paths are practically identical to the concept of linking the flame and not linking it, even down to the theme of hollowing/dragonrot. a lot of bosses actuallly have reskinned mechanics form souls bosses and the game still very much uses the same firelink shrine, estus flasks, the passive skills are basically just the rings and runes from DS and Bloodborne, the prosthetics are essentially just a rehash of Hunter tools, and the combat arts are basically just weapon arts from dark souls. So this game not only isn't original, but it hasn't really escaped its own roots and become something of its own. To top it off aswell, the devs didnt put much effort into the zone variety (except fountainhead palace and senpou temple, mount kongo) and couldn't be bothered to design gear sets or costumes, there's a lot of reskinned bosses, 2 bull fights, 4 headless fights, 3 drunkard fights, the guardian ape is fought twice, you fight genshiro 3 times... So this game actually feels a tad rushed. Fromsoft should stick to their style and be unique by exploring different contexts, instead of trying to be completely different and ending up trying to mimic other games. There's only 4 souls games, if DES is included, and Bloodborne is a better example of how fromsoft should approach new IPs since it was refreshing and original in the action horror genre, and not many other games are even remotely similar, while sekiro pales in comparison as a very good, but generic shinobi game. There are already 8 tenchu games, 3 ninja gaiden sigma games and soon to be 2 nioh games. You are speaking of dark souls as if it's overdone, just because some other devs are starting to copy the gameplay, but forgetting that if this is to be considered a spiritual successor to tenchu, it's the 9th installation in that franchise. Don't get me wrong, sekiro is a really good. But this game can't really be called original, and Bloodborne and Dark Souls were stronger fromsoft games.

I told myself I stopped playing Nioh because the loot system kept pushing it's smelly ass in my face, which lead to me use no gear and never changing my weapon, but it's the looks. I've been playing God Eater 3, which has a similar ass loot system where the game thinks +0.5% damage actually means something(it doesn't), and I'm having a great time with it. It's a good game. It's just not a game for me. The biggest issue I have is that most enemies seem to have attacks that track you when you dodge. Now I know they want us to parry but that's rather beside the point. It feels like they put in the attack tracking *just* to encourage parrying. I don't remember anything like that in any of the dark souls games and the only thing that does for me is make me feel like the difficulty is artificial because they're punishing you for not playing in a specific way.

sekiro is just a rythm game. You basically got 3 different buttons you gotta press at a specific time: block, dodge, jump. In summary, you have to time those buttons for different attacks, you could see it like a guitar hero type of game where you need to press specific buttons at a specific time. In sekiro, it's basically, block when you see a normal attack, dodge when you see a thrust to mikiri, jump when you see a sweep. You have the occasional rare grab attack, or unique enemy like the sichimen warrior where you need to actively dodge, but sekiro's combat is basically just that. Honestly, from the footage here, as well as a couple of your comments, it seems as if you gave up on Genichiro. And I get it. That fight is extraordinarily difficult - the steepest learning curve in the game. There’s a reason they open Hirata toward the beginning of Sekiro. They want you to clear that area - specifically Lady Butterfly - long before you reach Genichiro. I genuinely don’t see how someone passes the Butterfly fight only to tap out on Gyoubu or Genichiro. The Butterfly fight outright forces you to git gud at deflecting. Just like the Ogre fight forces you to re-learn dodging. The lack of a summoning mechanic in Sekiro has affected public opinion more than anything else. And I’m going to be honest here: the Soulsborne games wouldn’t have as big of a fanbase without a summoning mechanic, either. Summoning is a huge crutch for many, many Soulsborne players whether they want to admit it or not. I never defeated Friede without assistance, and I platinumed DS3. Summoning allows you to more or less “skip” difficult encounters, and continue on enjoying the world/lore/story/level design/etc. And that may very well have been the key to Soulsborne’s immense popularity, because those games have a lot more to offer beyond their difficulty. I think Sekiro is the hardest FromSoft title by far. I also think it deserves objective criticism for being what amounts to a niche melee stealth game with very shallow RPG elements. It’s simply not an accessible game. In fact, it makes the Souls games look fairly tame, especially DS1. At any point in DS1 you could throw on Havel armor and poise your way to an easy victory. Difficulty wise, DS1 hadn’t aged all that well by the time DS3 came along. Compared to the difficulty in Sekiro, DS1’s difficulty is sort of a joke. If the Souls games are MMA, Sekiro is boxing. Hyper specialized, almost to a fault. I’m not sure how it will stack up in the long run for me personally. I’m nearly finished with my first playthrough, and I do indeed enjoy the combat. Sekiro is without a doubt an inspired, meticulously crafted game. For that alone it deserves praise. But the Soulsborne games had a certain element of individuality baked into their cores. That sort of individual expression - everything from Fashionsouls to weapon choice to builds - is notably absent from Sekiro. In fact, the more I’ve played Sekiro and actually gotten gud, the more I’m convinced it shouldn’t even be compared to Soulsborne. Sort of like comparing Skyrim to Ocarina of Time. Maybe a thin veneer of similarity between the two games, but ultimately comprised of totally different DNA.

I thought genichiro was actually very easy. He has one of the most obvious thrust attack that can be mikiri'ed (he always thrust after doing a jump attack), his sweep attack is very reactable, because you know the only time a thrust is coming is when he jumps, or when you're very far away and he lunges. This means his posture is actually fucking easy to break, not to mention his normal attacks aren't even scary. His second phase is also a joke with how easy and powerful lightning reversal is. You can legit beat him with lightning reversal alone on 2nd phase.

Larry Piercy That’s entirely fair. I’m also an older man with children and not a lot of time on my hands. I struggled a lot with Sekiro through the first several hours. But I was able to git gud. I don’t think Sekiro requires some kind of preternatural reaction speed. Like Soulsborne, it simply asks you learn its rules. Once you do, things click, and you start beating difficult enemies. It feels foreign and perhaps “unfair” to longtime Soulsborne fans because it quite literally requires a different play style. Soulsborne was all about careful play - dodging, keeping distance, only attacking during damage windows. It’s entirely the opposite in Sekiro. You want to always press your attack. You choose your battles on your terms. And dodging/creating distance is outright frowned upon with the posture mechanic. It really is a wonderful, demanding system of combat that feels very rewarding when executed well. I understand if you simply don’t want to play, but the game has a lot to offer.

bronx zoo Genichiro - like the Owl fight - seems much easier only in retrospect. His patterns are very exploitable, yes, and lightning reversal is certainly OP. But you only learn all of that through much trial and error. And 2nd you already know lightning reversal is op. I think if you pay attention, you can really catch onto genichiro'S patterns very easily, even if you go blind. I died 2 times against genichiro before getting him. But like I said, I already had experience playing the game since I didn't go straight to him. I think the boss that stays hard no matter what is isshin sword saint, but it does become a lot easier when you already did the boss fight so many times. I had a similar experience but in reverse actually, I didn't like bloodborne when I first started playing it, I'd come from dark souls to bloodborne and just couldn't get to grips with the game so I left it on the shelf unplayed for years, sekiro came out and I started playing it and found it to be a really easy fit for me to get in to, I just seemed to "get it", so I played it for a fair few hours and then thought that it might have just been something at the time that put me off bloodborne, so I went back and started playing it and I am actually really, thoroughly enjoying it. To the point where I've been playing it solid for the last 3 days now. I know it's not really the same thing but I do get where you are coming from.

I like sekiro, but tbh I kinda understand what he is saying. I got to NG+3 and was done with it, unlike bb where if the NG didnt cap at 8 i would probably be at around 30 haha. But the main thing i dont like about sekiro is the realism of it tbh. I love souls born games for the creatures and monsters in every corner. And the dark malicious tone of all hope is gone. Sekiro gets repetitive with the enemy types and the way you need to fight them. Unlike ds or bb, there are multiple ways to tackle a beast. But with sekiro if you dont use the posture parry you wont beat the game simple as that. That is the most ruining part of it, IMO.

Opposite for me, I like Sekiro especially because it's much more grounded than it's counterpart. It has a lesser "horror" ambiance to it and that's what makes it better for me. Although the combat mechanic is still a big part of why I enjoy it. Unlike soulsborne, you actually feel like you're really crossing blades with the enemy. You feel the duels, wich isn't the same as in soulsbornes.

I find everything up until the rock/paper/scissors defense QTE to be pretty fun. I think they saw that people playing Dark Souls would pick a defense style (rolling, shield blocking, parrying) and just stick with it for the whole game, and wanted to encourage players to change it up a little. I don't think they did it in a way that made the game *better*, though. It's just this obnoxious scramble to push the right button or die instead of seeing an attack animation and responding to it.

Agreed. Love Sekiro personally. It wont appeal to every player or every souls fan though. It follows the souls structure pretty closely but the combat is extremely different overall. Im still horrible at deflecting since I feel like there is a delay to the blocking and striking and am used to more instant response, but regardless I love working my way through the game. I find alternate methods for alot of the bosses. Its something I can get alot better at and I always seek a challenge. Its very rare these days for new triple A games to have a challenge at default difficulty, so I like that this is extra difficult. Ive gone through all the Souls games so I like some variety in the mechanics and challenge. I can also see your viewpoint from a different angle. If the mechanics and gameplay went strongly against the way I liked to play a game or wasnt feeling it for whatever reason, then the game wouldnt do it for me. HATED Gravity Rush 2 and Watch Dogs 2 despite them having alot of good aspects. Playing them just annoyed the shit out of me. Its not just about difficulty. Ive beaten some insane settings on games new and very old, but most of the time I have to really like the core game. Then I want to improve and take on insane challenges. If thats not there the game is super hard for me because I dont enjoy playing it. Good example is Battletoads on NES. Ive beaten harder challenges like world rank 19 in Ninja Gaiden Black on the mission mode, with over 40 million points. Hundreds of hours of failure and frustration, but I loved the game even with its flaws. Battletoads is a game where I like the art style, music and multi genre approach but hate how it plays control wise and the super heavy trial and error type memorization ontop of the loose control kills it for me. Metal Storm on expert was disgustingly difficult (no videos back then or guides) but I loved the game so I got through it eventually. The mode was so hard it seemed untested and impossible often. Jim Power for SNES was another extreme difficulty old game. That was alot of trial and error too, but not to the extent of Battletoads and even though the game was mediocre it had tight control. I went through that one because it got listed as the hardest game many years back in EGM. Since I was young I wanted to beat it. Never liked the game. Point being it atleast had tight control.

I was very much in the same camp as Jim with Sekiro. It is *starting* to grow on me, but that's happening like 15 hours in. That's an awful lot to ask of anyone. The warning bells for me started going off when I finally beat the chained ogre and instead of getting a sense of relief or accomplishment, I felt literally nothing at all. It definitely helped knowing you can spam the block button to parry to a large extent and then better tune your timing in order to properly deflect, but I feel like that's something people have stumbled across and isn't being played as intended. The camera I also agree is pretty shit, cannot handle enclosed spaces and sadly that happens a lot. The stealth is mostly fine, but I feel doesn't play to FromSoft's design, because sometimes you're not sure if there's a clever way to backstab someone or if there isn't and you just have to deal with a more difficult fight. The branching paths you can take are a little *too* vague for me, to compare to dark souls it's like you can either go to the undead burg *or* the catacombs *or several other places you really have no business approaching. As a result, I was encountering many more difficult fights adding to my frustration. The ledge grab is also just plain bad, and being punished for dying via the game's Dragonrot mechanic really sucks out any encouragement you would normally get from dying to a boss and learning it's moves. This is made more difficult to swallow when you don't really know what the ultimate punishment is for Dragonrot and the items you need to heal it are finite. I really wish I could love Sekiro and I really wish it started to click a lot earlier than it did, and I really hope it keeps clicking and doesn't just leaving me feeling 'meh' for beating a boss and instead I start fist pumping and yelling 'fuck you!' on finally beating it.

Same, I beat Oniwa my 2nd try of my first play through (which I’m still on) but all the other smaller bosses are chores because every attack you do against them are deflected by them and there is no way to damage their health bar so you can’t damage their posture bar to get the deathblow. Also for every 100 deflects you do on a boss’s attack you get 5 hits in for the 100 attacks you deflected. My biggest problem is that for lesser enemies and mini bosses when you deflect their attacks you actually get an opening to strike but with bosses it’s impossible to do that. Lady butterfly is a great example of this because it took me around 30 tries and 3 irl days to complete because she is not hard but her second phase is so tedious with her going up into the air becoming invincible, spawning minions multiple times (when sekiro is meant for one on one combat), spamming kunai from a unreachable range, and her spamming magic homing missiles at you that if you get hit by you get stunlocked which makes you vulnerable to other attacks. I slowly began to realize the problem with bosses in this game came down to their size because with bosses like Oniwa he didn’t deflect every single attack you did on him, but when you get to butterfly or genichiro they are not only tanky but they deflect every single one of your attacks giving you no opening and non-deflecatable attacks are way more common where with Oniwa I don’t remember hardly any non-deflectable attacks. So not only can you not hit the smaller bosses or do damage over time or build up the posture bar but when you deflect their attacks you don’t get rewarded for it and their is no opening for minor attacks or deathblows. This just sucks so much because the mini bosses and everything else are easy for me and they might kill me a couple times but I’ll get it and make progress. but going up against certain bosses are like going up against brick walls. I don’t rage that much at games because I am very patient when it comes to games and this has remained true for this game, I that it doesn’t make you rage because the game is well designed but it makes you disappointed that you can’t make progress in this masterpiece of a game. I got so sick of fighting the same boss over and over again that even the thought of the boss area made me not want to play so I took a week brake from the game but by the time I got back i forgot all the bosses move set and my own combat skills I had developed before. It just sucks because if you aren’t automatically attuned to pick up the combat in this game really fast it demands a lot from the player in terms of how much time you have to put into bosses alone. Bosses are the only thing that get me stuck all other places of the game I enjoy. Which I do enjoy the boss fight because they are really cool and are like a dance but it just sucks I can’t make progress and experience this masterpiece of a game. Because this game is so well designed and the actual combat is absolutely genius but for some bosses the individual mechanics they have don’t mesh with the combat in sekiro, it almost feels like they try to make a souls boss and put it in sekiro expecting you to dodge all the attacks and be able to dodge the homing missiles. But in this game the dodge is not an dodge it’s just a single step out of the way and it doesn’t mesh well with the fast bosses who absolutely wail on you with only one way to defend yourself DEFLECT in which for bosses you don’t get rewarded for other than not taking damage, that’s not what a parry is though it’s supposed to give you an opening to strike. Maybe I’ll pick it up and beat it some other time hopefully I do love this game and the story because it is one of the most well made games I have ever experienced but it just sucks my reflexes can’t keep up.

The more I think about it, Sekiro is honestly more like Ninja Gaiden than anything we've seen from FromSoftware over the last decade-ish. Everything till now was rooted in the basic formula of having to manage your stamina to effectively avoid damage and fight. Even in Bloodborne, where hitting would gain back lost health, you still needed to play somewhat defensively, somewhat reactively, and you could really only experiment with weapon types as opposed to special moves and combos. Sekiro is more classic action game than any SoulsBorne game ever was. There's no stamina management for one, but there's also a ton of unlockable skills and moves that widen/deepen your available options for dealing with enemies, who's many differences across the areas are frankly more pronounced because how you fight them is so drastically different. Not only is there this rock/paper/scissors thing going with blocking, jumping, or dodging, there's also the whole thing of Posture. Sekiro usually DEMANDS a degree of tactical aggression in how you play that in ANY FromSoft game prior would be nothing but certain death. If I had attacked Genichiro as many times in a row as I had to attack him on the run I finally beat that motherfucker at, I'd have run out of stamina and been ganked about a thousand times were I playing any other FromSoft game. Sekiro has also proven to me that spite can be an excellent motivator when skill becomes a bigger factor in your ability to progress. I've spent the last two days "leveling" up Wolf and working at a particular boss, and while getting more health certainly left me more opportunities to make more mistakes, when I finally beat him, he'd barely scratched me, because I'd gotten him down to a near science, in a way I frankly couldn't do with bosses and rough parts in Bloodborne. Ebrietas was the boss that finally made me stop and say "Alright, Fuck this, I can't do any better than I'm doing cause the game itself won't really let me do anything to improve here beyond make incremental improvements to my health and damage, which are already almost soft-capped anyway." Genichiro, by contrast, I could learn and get better at, because the system itself allowed for me to improve; it allowed for me to develop my skills against what it was throwing my way and it rewarded my time spent appropriately (try reflecting a lightning-infused sword strike in mid-air; man did I feel fucking badass and accomplished when I realize I had that particular mechanic DOWN) because it was something I could actually get better at without being totally reliant on gear or stats or builds. But also on my earlier point on spite, I was close to dropping it, and playing something else for a bit, cause it was becoming more frustrating than fun to throw myself at this one dude and just get my ass destroyed again and again. But I saw a way to maybe make it easier, which let me make it even easier as I slowly but surely learned this one dude's ins and outs so well that I eventually just mopped the floor with him. All because my mindset was "Nah, I want to FUCK this asshole UP." and the game was willing to oblige if I was willing to give it the time to learn just how to royally fuck this secret three-phase lightning-stabbing motherfucker with his own damn lightning and his own damn lightning-fast stabs and sweeps. I like Sekiro because it doesn't feel like I got lucky, which I how I felt making my way through most of Bloodborne. I like Sekiro because I feel like it will allow me to legitimately get good, like it will truly respect and reward the time I put into it. I like Sekiro because it feels like I am actually FIGHTING when I'm fighting, not desperately trying to survive and flail wildly hoping I'll kill whatever it is I'm currently praying doesn't paste me. But not everyone will get that some feeling. Not everyone even expects or wants that feeling. And that's ok.

I actually didn't know Jim didn't like Sekiro. Coming back from Elden Ring, which I'm LOVING, it feels 2 steps forward but 1 step back from Sekiro. Not that there's anything wrong with the combat of Elden Ring/Dark Souls but mechanically it's designed around your character having more committal actions, which just come across as slow, I'd almost wager a bit dull. I'm towards the end of the game and I haven't really had to change the way I play even with new bosses/rarely die more than 3-4 times on a boss (if that), and while I wouldn't say it bothers me I agree I don't get that sense of accomplishment. I think the difference is, with Sekiro everything had to be meticulously designed to continually challenge the character with the same framework design, while Elden/DS still being well designed, has a lot more freedom due to limitations of your own character. If I had to condense it, Sekiro has a higher skill floor, lower skill ceiling, while it's the opposite is true for Elden but even comparative the skill ceiling isn't really at the level of Sekiro's skill floor.

Just one hour? This is a game you've got to practice. I really don't think it's ever been done before and, as a result, I also felt like it wasn't for me but I just kept at it. Put a few more into it. Maybe you'll learn to like it like me. If not, well, at least you tried.

It took me 10 hours to start enjoying dark souls. Give it another try.

@@alastor8091 this case is probably one of those games that you put down for a few months or even a year after the hype dies off, and when you decide to give it another try is when you realize you did like it after all.

Maybe it doesn't work for you but definitely try for more than an hour. The system really does take some more time to get into but when it 'clicks' it feels kind of like how moving to Bloodborne felt and getting the hang of that after coming from souls.

Hey Jim, not every game is for you, and that's also fine. I'm glad that you look at it in both a critical and personal way.

Most of the replay ability of the FromSoft games comes to me in the customization options and this game doesn't have that. Also hit boxes

@@TheKillaShow [Spoilers] I got to the fight with Owl before finalizing that it wasn't for me. Gave the game a worthy shot and I still found it more enjoyable than most games, but it chose to omit the features that kept me playing each game 300+ hours.

Sekiro feels like playing Souls for the first time again. I like that about it. A learning curve i need to overcome.

Thats exactly how I feel about sekiro. The magic of learning a new, unfamiliar and punishing system is what made the Dark Souls and Demon's Souls so fun in terms of gameplay. Time to git gud all over again.

I honestly feel the same way. I love me some dark souls. But I just can't get into sekiro. I've put in a good 40+ hours into it but I'm just not having as much fun with it, if at all, as I did dark souls. I've gotten more pissed off at sekiro than I have with any game in a long time. It's good that other people enjoy it. It's just sad that I'm not one of them either.

It was fun unti first owl, whoch i had to glitch to beat, then it got fun again, then stoped after demon of hatred, owl 2, and final boss. Im on owl and final, demon i had to glitch, those three all just ruin the game to me.

Totally with you. I've been working my way through it, but I'm not sure how much further I'll go. One of the things that I'm struggling with the most is just the loss of progression and options compared to Souls. In Dark Souls, if you need to clear 10 enemies before taking on a boss, and you die to that boss a dozen times, you're still farming all of those enemies and - if you're careful - building up souls until you can level, which ultimately makes the boss just a touch easier. In Sekiro you gain experience for some skills and tool upgrades, but you need to have the skills and tools to upgrade, and the progression doesn't feel as rewarding or as impactful. The above is ok because Sekiro isn't an RPG like Souls, but as a big fan of the Souls game, I was hoping to like Sekiro more and it's difficult not to compare them.

yes, the game has good combat, but is otherwise extremely short and shallow compared to DS.
