Selecting the Right Avocado Scion Wood Every Time

Finding good avocado scion wood significantly boosts your chances of grafting success. It can be tricky though. Hopefully this video can show you how to do it right every time. As soon as avocado trees 'wake up' from winter dormancy, it's time to start grafting. You can tell when they 'wake up' by checking the buds. You'll notice they start to swell. Just cut a few inches below the swollen buds and start grafting!
This video was filmed January 2022.

Great video. Looks like I am not the only one that thinks a good avocado scion should be taken from avocado branches that are starting to show the start of flower buds forming.

What part of SoCal are you in? You mentioned an upcoming scion exchange, which sounds AMAZING. When and Where?? I live in Los Angeles and i stumped a tree this year, tons of new shoots and i want to add about 5 less common varieties to it in Spring '24.

Hi , thanks for the great learnings , hey can I reuse a rootstock that my first graft failed on ? I chopped below the union to get rid of the failed cleft graft
@AJTheGraftMan
@AJTheGraftMan 2 жыл бұрын
Yes you can. Usually when a graft fails, there will be new rootstock growth below where the graft was done. I usually wait for that rootstock growth to get thick enough, and then graft onto that. And that works for me

Nice video, AJ. I needed to see close-ups as you displayed here. Some of the avocado varieties flower at slightly different times, correct? So the buds pushing would be at slightly different times also, right? Generally, they are all going right now in SoCal right now in this nice weather? I also heard that one grafter likes his grafts close the seed to not have to deal as much with growth from the rootstock. I've been having problems grafting in the pots if I didn't put enough soil high enough into the pot. My hands slicing the rootstock (cleft grafting) would hit the rim of the pot if the soil isn't near to the top of the pot. I haven't cut myself yet, but I think I'm going to wear some type of glove on my non-cutting tool hand just for protection. I've come pretty close to slicing more than the rootstock if you know what I mean. How many months before a successful graft should push out new growth? Is a Zutano scion worth anything to graft onto a rootstock? Just to get pollen from that "B" type avocado and to get seeds to seeds to germinate later for grafting?
@AJTheGraftMan
@AJTheGraftMan 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Neal. Yes different flowering times means different times of buds pushing. The most ideal grafting in containers is as close to the seed as possible. The glove is a good idea. Usually takes about 6 weeks for grafts to push growth. Zutano is a great rootstock.
