Good stuff! Pilotage and navigation with charts is fun. The idea is to spot where the land checkmarks are and fly checkpoint to checkpoint. I like 6 minute checkpoints and this is why. Aircraft performance is referenced by indicated airspeed. If my indicated airspeed is 120 Knots Per Hour... I simply divide by 10... In 6 minutes the potential ground speed is easy to mentally reference as 12 KM potential to travel in 6 minutes. This makes easy transitioning to faster aircraft simple. 180 KPH is 18 KM in 6 minutes potential... Divide that by 2 and in 3 minutes you have 9 KM potential Ground Speeds divide that by 2 and you have 4.5 miles potential travel in 1.5 minutes or 90 seconds... 250 KPH is 25 K miles in 6 minutes potential travel or 12.5 KM in 3 minutes or 6.25 KM in 90 seconds... Low and slow... 50 miles per hour is 5 miles potential travel in 6 minutes or 2.5 miles in 3 minutes... High and fast... 450 KPH = 45 KM potential travel in 6 minutes or 22.5 KM in potential in 3 minutes or 11.25 potential in 90 seconds. What I do when flight planning is to keep in sight the areas that are my checkpoints and stay ahead of the aircraft waiting to get to the next checkpoint. With this simple tool I personally use it's hard to get bewildered with the dynamic changes our world offers as to relative winds. With planning climb out, cruise and descents thinking in 6 minute terms makes the math easy. Learning to know what to expect in interpolation of all the numbers to stay on course and fly checkpoint ground reference to checkpoint becomes simple in planning. Flying cross country or local the view is pilotage and navigation, keeping ahead of the aircraft identifying the checkpoints waiting to get to it... then doing the same with your next checkpoint... I hope this simple tool makes pilotage and navigation more fun for everyone! Best wishes... I still love paper and pencil in a paperless world...
