Secondly, it should also be evident that the boundary conditions of the wave are free, free at x = 0 and x =L respectively as it appears as if the wave is at its maximum for the moment shown. Using this information we can start to form an equation y(x,t) = Ae^(-(gamma)t)cos(kx)cos((omega)t - phi)) Here it can be quickly determined that phi must be = 0 for a time t = 0 and a position x = 0 it can be assumed that the wave function is at its maximum amplitude hence phi = 0 After this has been determined we are presented with a unique opportunity, because this wave presumably does not change over time we can say that the cos((omega)t) term must go to 1 for all time meaning that omega must be equal to 0, this would mean that the velocity of the wave would be = 0 which would make sense as clearly it is not propagating on her face. Next, we should look for the k term which can be solved using the boundary condition x = L. cos(kx) must be = 1 at x=L and because cos = 1on the intervals of (pi)n it can be determined that k = n(pi)/L, or can it? Looking at the wave pattern one will notice that there appear to be 14 nodes at which the wave does not move meaning that in this our equation cos(kx) must be equal to pi/2 at these points. This makes the problem a bit more tricky as now the k term must match these conditions. We are now forced to say that for n multiples of 7 k = n(pi)/((n/7)L) which should work for all multiples of n up to the 14th as we have effectively split L into 14 equal parts. The equation as it stands is now y(x,t) = Ae^(-(gamma)t)cos((n(pi)/((n/7)L))x) This leaves me with a bit of a conundrum as I have no good explanation as to why the wave would be damping backward in time but alas it seems from the image that we are provided with that it does so we must say that the damping constant (which is = 2*gamma) is negative as the damping effect appears to go up as time moves backward (something of a physical anomaly). Now another problem arises when trying to calculate the damping constant. The first thought that came to mind was to try and use the equation x(hat) = (omega naught)X(hat)/sqrt((omega naught)^2 - (omega)^2) - (damping constant)^2(omega)^2) This would present enough problems on its own if not for the fact that we can immediately rule this out as (omega) = 0 and because the system is not propagating we can say (omega naught) = 0. The fact that the wave is not propagating means that the damping constant will have to be experimentally determined and because I do not have access to her eyebrows I do not believe this will be possible. It could be done using approximations from the photo and trying to visually match a wave structure to her eyebrows but I don't really want to do that right now. So it appears we have to leave the equation as is though we can drop the negative in the exponent because gamma will be negative as well as explained earlier therefore it can be modeled as y(x,t) = Ae^((gamma)t)cos((n(pi)/((n/7)L))x) It should be noted that because the wave state present in her eyebrow is not propagating it cannot be said that it is in fact a wave, however, if you were looking to model the function evident in her eyebrow believe the function provided above should be sufficient on the bounds n=1 -> n = 14 once gamma has been determined.
