Well, I went through my notes from several weeks ago and realized I forgot that to get good results you have to do the 1:00 citric acid + 1:00 peroxide twice. I did two prints this morning and they're wonderful. And selenium toned. And thus far, no scratches. Maybe a short update video to come. Thanks everybody for watching. Here's the process I used this morning: 2:00 paper developer :30 rinse 1:00 citric acid face down 1:00 H2O2 face down 1:00 citric acid face down 1:00 H2O2 face down :30 rinse Flash with bright light for :20 2:00 paper developer 2:00 rinse Then a ~5:00 or so soak in selenium toner until shadows are to one's liking. Archival rinse

Did I see a parking meter next to your driveway? Ha! Good one.

Yes! Got it from my brother-in-law some years ago. Takes pennies, nickels and dimes. Got the lock to the coin box rekeyed, and worked over the brass clockwork. A novelty, as no one pays me to park in my driveway. :)

I don’t really know much about selenium toning, but I do love the effect it gives. I actually think the staining issues you had actually add to the prints in this case which is interesting...

I'm not much of a developer guy, so some of this was over my head. I got the idea though.chemistry! Good idea shooting all over your house and outside. Who is your yard man? Nice flowers too. I like the blue painting in the sun room. You are a scientist I think. Question: Is your youtube play triangle behind you pointing left because of possible copyright infringement? I haven't done any videos, back, hip still hurts. Great work Joe!

Hey David, thanks for watching. I'm married to my gardener, the credit is all hers. Regarding the YT triangle, it's kind of a silly thing on my part. Somehow, when I first put it up I had it backwards, then just decided I'd use it as an arrow pointing to me, the host. So it's an arrow, rather than a play symbol. Even though it is a play symbol. Now it's become a tradition, just confusing enough that people occasionally ask me about it. Suppose I should do a video and explain it.

What if you use film instead of paper to get more speed to make portrait or there any faster paper or a way to make it faster like pre flash and push and pull?

Using film would give faster exposures but getting to a finished print would take longer. There might be some benefit to pre-flashing the paper, however. Portraits could be done in bright sunlight with this reversal process, you'd only need a several-seconds long exposure, but the quality of light is harsh. More experimenting is needed.

Hello Joe Van Cleave I love your Contant. I made a 4x5 camera using your bellows and 50mm binocular lens idea, it works extremely well very sharp. I’ve added some movements on it as well and I had a question for you about selenium toning. What are your thoughts about selenium toning paper negatives for archival reasons? I haven’t tried this yet, do you recommend it? Maybe you can make a video about it or something. Thanks for all the great tips and knowledge you’ve shared on your channel.

Selenium toning should improve archival quality of any silver gelatin print, assuming they are stored properly.

Hi Joe. Great video. I can only get 30% or 50% H2O2 here is South Africa. Would that be an issue or can I just dilute it down? Thanks

I'm using 35% directly, your 30% should work fine as-is. Just wear gloves and eye protection.
