From 312 - 63 BC, the Seleucid Empire controlled vast territories and helped to spread the influence of Hellenism into far off lands. As an introductory video, this video covers the rise of the Seleucids as a player on the Hellenistic stage which they would greatly contribute to this fascinating period of history.

The diadochi are overshadowed by Rome, I could kiss you for making this video.

The intrigue of Phillip, Alexander and the Diadochi really foreshadows the greed of the Late Republic and Early Principate though. Almost a prologue to how the Romans came to dominate the whole of the Mediterranean.

It is a great shame that the Diadochi period is so shrouded from lack of source material. I am a great fan of Ancient history it is frustrates me that much of more interesting periods (for me) are almost impossible to find more information. I have just stumbled upon your channel and want to thank you for the Seluccid videos. An Empire that deserves far more interest, but will probably stay relegated to the page, due to lack of information. Thank You.

Its kinda ironic that Seleukos got killed by a power hungry man like Keranos if its true that he took part in killing his best friend Perdikkas to get Babylon in the first place

The Seleucids introduced the elephant as a terror weapon of war to the western world - it was obviously derived from India but to that point unknown to the west and we find the Seleucid dynasty establishing the city of Apamea in Syria as the base for elephant training and breeding. It spread to the Hellenistic world in general with Pyrrhus of Epirus (Albania) - a close relative of Alexander the great via his mother Olympias -who used the elephant in his invasion of Italy an animal the Romans had never seen before but eventually worked out how to spook! The use of elephants spread to Carthage in north west Africa and here they probably used either the Indian elephant or a now extinct more docile species of African elephant to train and to use in Hannibal's invasion of Italy scaling the Alps and almost destroying the Romans until they fought back and won. The Seleucid era was used to determine the chronology of the Middle East for a long time with echoes of this in the Bible with the book of Daniel and also the book of Maccabees an era when the Jews revolted against their Seleucid masters and won. Here again the Seleucid armies used elephants and there is a description in the book of Maccabees of how a brave Jewish soldier got underneath an Seleucid elephant and stabbed it - killing it but sacrificing his own life at the same time as the elephant fell dead and crushed him. Some scholars even think that the reference in the Islamic Koran of the ruler who brought elephants to Arabia (The year of the elephant) actually is referring back to the Seleucid era and the elephants in the book of Maccabees.

@@billdehappy1The Elephants Hannibal brought were fairly inconsequential tbh, it's only so present in the cultural imaginary because it's such an intrepid feat to have them cross the mountains. By the time of their conflict with Carthage, the Romans were familiar with Elephants thanks to Epirus, who famously won nearly every battle, putting the Romans to flight every time, with adept usage of Elephants

Are you Albanian bro, only an Albanian would claim the Epirote kingdom to be (Albania) 😂😂
@kaloarepo288
@kaloarepo288 7 ай бұрын
No I'm of Italian extraction - the ancient kingdom of Epirus occupied part of what is now Albania but it was essentially a Greek kingdom -like Macedonia on the periphery but still basically Greek. Pyrrhus claimed he was descended from Achilles I think.@@hardlo7146

Selucids Empire is the true long-term successor kingdom to the Persian. Alexander made it possible with his massive military campaigns. But he just did not live long enough.
