I tried to make a bike that balances the same way a traditional bike does.
I wanted to make it possible to ride within the limits of the room.
However, the controlling of the bike turned out to be much more challenging than I expected...

Nice and successful attempt. All your videos are well explained. I made the "One axis self balancing stick" and it works great. I plan to make some of the other projects as well. Congratulations.

It wasn't until i watched the veratasium video on how you ride a bike and the steering inputs required both to steer and to balance, it made me realise how difficult it actually is. Therefore what you are making really is difficult, I doff my hat to you sir.

Very nice! The same experience with my Lego NXT bicycle experiments, turning a bicycle in a small circle is challenging. However, human is also tricky to do that, unless he is an acrobat expert.

You probably know this already but to turn a bike or motorcycle, you start by turning away from the direction you want to turn. Once the bike leans into the direction of the turn, you start turning to right the bike. By delaying how fast the bike it righted, you can continue with the turn.

I believe that only applies when you go above a certain speed - at very low speeds you simply steer where you're going? Finding when to transition between steering modes is one of the things that are super hard to learn. Learning to ride a motorcycle very slow took me weeks - and 25 years in, I'm still pretty bad at it. Can't say I'm very good going fast, either, but at least that's more fun ;)

You are making very good job. What i want to add is, when you are steering a real bike, you are using your body also to adjust center of mass by tilting your body and also head. This also affect steering. You can simulate this by adding a weight and adjust it by a servo. This could help i think.

im not sure if different wheel sizes play a huge role in adjusting while doing a turn

Wonderful, I was not sure, if it could be done without using a gyro wheel.

That's definitely the way I'd do it too. Could you design it to stand upright at a stop? Could you have a feedback loop to learn what steering settings to use for various speeds and turn radius etc? That way it would be more applicable to full size models with a rider.

Yes, steering settings to use for various speeds and turn radius is more complicated to calculating but can improve stability.

The fork has to be able to move freely without a connected servo and the center of gravity must be moved by a servo towards the side of desired direction.
@ReMRC
@ReMRC Жыл бұрын
I can easily try to make the fork move freely. If I don't change the center of mass it should drive straight? I do not think so...
@falkgerbig7787
@falkgerbig7787 Жыл бұрын
@@ReMRC You could mount e.g. the battery on the top of the frame movable by a servo. The bike will automatically steer to the side on which the battery will be moved and steer straight ahead again when the battery, the center of gravity respectively, is centered. Possibly the frontwheel needs more inertia, e.g. apply a bigger diameter and a metallic rim. The limits of a room might not be sufficient, the principle of stabilization utilizing prezession needs velocity and place consequently.
@ReMRC

This version of the bike is not adapted for this at all. For try I make the fork move freely. Does not drive at all, fall immediately. That's understandable. But yes, a traditional bike can run without a driver (not much, but it can).
@falkgerbig7787
@falkgerbig7787 Жыл бұрын
@@ReMRC Nevertheless a real bicycle or bike always drives with self stabilization using the prezession of the frontwheel as it is a gyro. For a model one can use a reactionwheel, but this is not the natural method. I would give your model a try with a bigger frontwheel and a metallic rim.
@ReMRC

@@falkgerbig7787 Precession is just one of the reasons why a bike can self-balance. But not the most important. And when driving slower - doesn't matter at all. You can read theory about "how a bike stays in an upright position while in motion".
