Self-Compassion: Be Kind to Yourself

The antidote for the poison of self-criticism is self-compassion, and self-kindness is the key. Become your own best friend by changing how you talk to yourself and learning to embrace your flaws.
We are taught to be compassionate and caring to others just as Jesus Christ was. We take care of friends and family without a second thought. So why do we sometimes exclude ourselves from the same compassion?
Elder Jeffrey R. Holland taught that "as children of God, we should not demean or vilify ourselves, as if beating up on ourselves is somehow going to make us the person God wants us to become.” Remember, everyone is a child of God who is deserving of love, forgiveness, and patience-and that includes you.

God told Kory Robertson, wife of Willie Robertson, when she was praying about being a failure as a mother: “ I did not call you to be successful; I called you to be faithful.” That puts the nature of God into perspective. He knows we are limited in this world, and he wants us to take courage, do our best and look to Him. That’s all. If He is not condemning us, then neither should we.

If the Lord won't insult or berate us, then why should we do it to ourselves? He lovingly corrects us when we are in the wrong, but He does so out of compassion and a desire for us to be our best selves. We should do the same.

@@dennisclark6758 There is always something you can do to be happy. Going out and serve others will replace loneliness. You'll feel that your existence is important because you bless other people's lives. If you can't go out then make a video and tell your story. Perhaps other people can relate and connect with you. Just be proactive. You can win against loneliness. Heavenly Father wants you to be happy po.

May I suggest an old sermon that really helped me overcome self-criticism? It's called "Be Renewed in the Spirit of your Mind" by Patricia Holland. It's on KZfaq. Her husband is actually quoted in this video, but her sermon gave a lot of practical advice for overcoming this. Totally changed my life.

But yourself is very important because if you keep saying bad things to yourself you will start to belive them, and same goes if you are saying good things about yourself. How are you blessed? I had a bishop who asked me when I felt that way, who wanted me to feel it? Either Heavenly Father or the adversary is saying it and if it's discouraging, who do you think is saying it? I answered the obvious, then my bishop said "That's you how you can recognize who's talking to you and know to ignore it". We all feel we've sunk to far, but the kinder we are to ourselves and the more we choose to believe the Savior is helping us, and to trust Him, that anxiety will disappear and we'll grow stronger.

This is a timely video. Just today I happened to catch a glance of myself in a glass door, I was in my military uniform and wearing a COVID mask. As I walked up to the door it was as if I heard a voice behind me say, "You are so handsome, and successful, and I am so proud of you." It caught me so off guard that it almost brought me to tears.

I beat myself up for my various mistakes and choices that I feel are me spitting in the face of Jesus. When in reality, I'm not, and I'm doing myself a more significant disservice by not taking advantage of the savior's atonement. He suffered for me; I owe him everything.

I had this problem for a long time but, with God's help, I overcame it. Our loving Heavenly Father commands us to love not only Him with all our souls but also our neighbors as ourselves. And that equality is important. Sometimes we may treat ourselves like figurative gold and our neighbors like figurative dirt, but sometimes we can do the opposite instead; in any case, neither is correct. Ideally, we should treat ourselves like the Savior does---with patience and kindness and a sincere desire for us to repent of our sins and to become our best selves.

We are taught that "With what judgment ye shall ye shall also be judged". Why then would that not extend to how we treat ourselves? Of course, Elder Dieter has addressed this in "Forget Me Not". Everyone is a package deal, and remember that Jesus is eager to receive every package, not just the ones you find appealing, exciting and valuable.

At some point or another, we all had to deal with these counterfeits of the adversary--self-criticism, self doubt, and comparing ourselves with others. The realization that we are all unique in our own way, and that we are never defined by our mistakes, is a step into self-compassion and acceptance. Let us remember that we are destined for greatness. If we look at ourselves and others through the eyes of the Savior, then we would see that we are all alike unto Him and He loves us unconditionally.

Sometimes the people who dislike this are the ones who are struggling the hardest. There are those who haven't felt kindness and who are angry that there are people who have. Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that despitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be the children of your Father which is in Heaven. That doesn't mean try to make their life better, that means know that if they let God in, He can help them come to Him and their lives will be better. Good video.

The forgiveness can begin even if I feel insincere in it. As I have given daily prayers for the wellbeing of those who have harmed me, I was given everything I needed to see the "enemy" as God's child and desire for that person (groups of people) to have what I most desire for myself.

I LOVE THIS! Self compassion is so important! I almost wish the animation at the beginning was a little different though. I wish the girl depicted would have hugged the critical voice in her head. I think that Christ won’t ever take away our difficulties, but he can help us accept and love the parts of ourselves we either can’t change or struggle with. I’m not saying we should listen to what that critical voice says about us, but that we should not be ashamed to struggle with low self esteem or negative thoughts, because that can prevent us from seeking help. As we make efforts to be friends with ourselves, every part of ourselves, I think it is silly to assume that voice will disappear. BUT by having faith in Christ and our own ability to improve, we truly can diminish that voice’s influence!! So appreciate the church speaking to this issue that really persists today!

I was LITERALLY talking about this this morning before this popped up. God made us in his image. Many people take the time to love how God created the trees, sun, animals etc but we dont see ourselves QUITE like God's creation when we think negatively about ourselves. When we talk bad to ourselves or hate ourselves, we are hating or dislike what God created and LOVES. I learned to ask "what right do I have to hate what God loves?"

David, thanks for sharing that, because that's the "HOW" to changing our self-talk. When I start beating myself up for a silly mistake or falling short in some way, I stop and ask, "If my best friend called right now, angry at herself for this exact same thing, would I be saying this to her?" Of course not! I would be kind, comfort her, and not think any less of her as a person; and whatever she needed to do to correct the mistake, I'd encourage her and build her confidence. This one thing--noticing and changing my self talk--has been the key to banishing anxiety and depression!

Thank you for this video. I really needed this. There were times when I feel I'm not good enough, defining myself by my failures. A former missionary said to me that Satan always make ways for us to not love others and especially to not love ourselves. And with that, I always remind myself that I am a child of God and I can do better than my inner self is telling me I can't. Loving myself can make me love others too.

I am so grateful for this message. I have my whole life been critical of myself and never felt good enough, and always compared myself to others. People have told me that I can't love others unless I love myself 1st. I STILL DON'T BELIEVE THAT ONE. Putting others before myself always made me feel good, and maybe helped me think that I could be as good as others, that I am a good person. Hopefully I can turn to this message and learn to love myself more.
