Self sourcing activated carbon for your 3D printer and testing whether it has been acid washed

Жыл бұрынWell, let's talk activated carbon pellets and self sourcing them if you don't want to buy it from Nevermore (or other supplier) directly.
Generally any carbon pellet could work unless they are acid washed as acid washed carbon will rust all the internals of your printer in a matter of hours.
However, it's quite simple to test whether your carbon is acid-washed by using a closed container, fan with heater and couple screws.
Stay safe and filter the air that's coming out of your printer :)

That's very interesting. I think there should be more warnings from producers / the 3D print community that self sourcing activated carbon might harm your printer terribly. Great video!

wouldn't be easier to test for ph? I also bought a bunch of water filtration bags that are dying in a drawer because I am scared to use it. Thanks for your video!

Hello, interesting test, I didn't know that activated charcoal, or at least some of them, are washed with an acid, so I'm wondering if it's specified on the labels of the products you tested. On the second one, which is obviously to be avoided for the 3D printer air purification project, is it specified somewhere on the box that it's been washed with an acid?

You might try activated carbon from aquarium shop.These are still cheap and if fish safe are maybe not acidic

I think that 3rd attempt might not be accurate as there could be still some acid residue from test no2. Anyway this kind of test is nicely showing what acid can do. If You find a producer of the carbon pelets You can always ask if it is steam or acid activated.

can I test it it submerge it in the water, agitated it, wait few minute and test the PH? or can i use 3M carbon filter?

Regarding PH - not sure if this works like that. 3M carbon should be ok.
