We Have a Window Installed! (And a Tiny Leak...) | Transit Van Conversion E09

We can't put it off any longer... it's time for the van window install! Meaning we need to cut a huge hole in the side of our van conversion! For our van build we wanted a nice sliding window in what will eventually be our kitchen 🙂
We learnt that fitting van bonded windows can be quite a nerve-wracking experience as unlike some of the other parts of the build, you can't really do this one twice! So we tried to spend some time figuring out the process in our minds before we started to install the window, and it went... mostly ok! What's life without a few mishaps along the way?
We cut the window hole fine, filed it down and added a bit of hammerite around the edges. But when we came to put the trim on, we realised it didn't fit snug. It was designed to go over both skins of the van and so when we were trying to put it on, it just fell off. We debated just not using the trim and keeping the smaller sized hole, which would have worked, but in the end decided to enlarge it and continue as before. After a bit of head scratching and detouring to make the hole bigger, we ended up losing the rest of the daylight. (Summer, where are you!?).
Because of that it was pitch black before we were able to get the primer and sealant on, which is not the best of conditions by any means. We would have liked to have stopped at this point and continued on in the morning when it was lighter (and warmer!) but unfortunately there was a huge storm due in the early hours of the morning and we didn't fancy leaving our van with a giant hole in the side of it during that!
Lesson learnt... do not undertake something like a window install unless you've got decent weather ahead of you. It was hard though, as Winter has really slowed things down, and if we didn't put it in at this point we were looking at another almost 2 week delay...
Because it was so cold, it was incredibly hard to get the sealant out of the tube (it's really viscous), and the only way we could get it to flow was to track the gun round with a heatgun to warm it up. We later realised our caulking gun is not very powerful too (we upgraded it for the next windows, big difference!).
Eventually we got the window in and retired for the night exhausted. The next day it was still in place, so passed the first test! Unfortunately, there were a few small drip marks along the top edge, not surprisingly given the conditions we had, but a bit of a let down. Oh well, we'll figure out a way to fix that later. (Now done... ended up being a bit more complicated than we first thought.... but that's for a later video...!).
With thanks to Ian and Pip for holding the lights up for us as we put the sealant around the window :)
Looks great having it installed, looks more like a campervan from the outside now!
Thanks for watching! Leave us a comment if you have any ideas, we'd love to hear them! 🙂

Haha, we wish! We're usually about 1-2 videos ahead in the build... takes a while to find time to edit them, have to balance it with research, other life stuff and actually building something too 😀

Another great video and judging by how dark it got, it certainly looked a little more than 'challenging! You got it in though and it looks great. Not an easy thing to do cutting a damned great hole in your van but you did it. Looking forward to the next installment. (lovely to see the sheep and wild birds as well)

Well done, you two! 🚐👍 As far as the weather is concerned, I would have probably covered the hole with some foil or similar and waited for warmer temps and some daylight. Only brave souls attempt something like this in the cold of night (like you two! 😉) Let's hope the window doesn't take after the stick pins... 🙏😎 Did you get the small leaks fixed? Our Crafter will hit the body shop tomorrow to get the long left rear scrape fixed. I've also taken the time over the last couple of days to document the search leading to our conversion candidate on our website - revisiting the frustration.

Yeah, it was a bit of a nightmare at the end... 🙃 We wanted to leave the hole cut and cover it, but the issue we had was there was a big storm due to come through in the middle of the night that was the start of some nasty weather for almost two weeks. We debated it but in the end thought it was better to get it in, in case the cover came off and the inside of the van started getting lashed with rain and wind for hours 😳 We've definitely experienced the hard way how much of a difference the weather makes if you can't put the van inside somewhere. But it's all an experience! In retrospect we probably should have waited for a couple of clear days to start, as something always crops up... but we'd already waited weeks for a decent opportunity to do it by this point! Happy to report the window has been in for a while now though, road tested and completely leak free. But that's a story for another video... 😏 Glad to hear your van is coming along! And yeah, the search for the right van does take a while doesn't it, lots to consider 🙂

That's awesome to hear, thanks very much! We got all our windows from leisurevehiclewindows.co.uk/ford-transit-2014-xlwb/. The large one is listed as the 'FORD TRANSIT 2014> (L2-L3-L4) REAR OPENING HALF SLIDER R/H PRIVACY'. Hope that helps!

Hiya! We got our windows from www.leisurevehiclewindows.co.uk and the trim came with it, but from the invoice it's down as 'EDGE TRIM: (LARGE) 6-8mm FOR FRONT WINDOW'. We used the same trim for our small side windows at the back of the van too, HTH!

Hiya, they're called bonded windows and we got ours from here (www.leisurevehiclewindows.co.uk/). Being in the UK it won't be much help to you unfortunately! Hope you manage to find some.

Was that window custom made for the van ?
@SelfBuiltStories
@SelfBuiltStories Жыл бұрын
Hiya, yes it was, bonded windows are usually made to fit an exact model of van, and different ones depending on which side it's on and whether you want it opening or not etc. We got ours from www.leisurevehiclewindows.co.uk/ and they have a selection for most vans 👍

Hmm these guys don't, UK only. Wouldn't know any suppliers in the US but they should be fairly commonplace so imagine if you do a Google for bonded windows for your particular van model something will come up hopefully, and thanks glad you're enjoying them 🙂
