Thanks for your dedication! You're one of my inspirations for starting to grow my own food this year, even in an extremely limited space in my backyard. But every little something is worth it. Just have to wait for my tomato growing season, which won't be until next year. I'm living in Germany so I have to start my tomato seed indoors because we often get late frosts until may. Still can't wait though :) Phytophtora also is a larger issue for our climate, so resistant varieties are a game changer. Mulch has been overall a real treat for my garden this year and I also built a raised bed with a Hügelkultur-filling like you did. Salads and radishes love it already! So again thank you very much for your informative videos, they've been a huge help for me :)

Great video! I always enjoy your videos, you are good teacher. I want to add something to fight root feed nematodes , it's by making vermi compost tea and spraying them regularly. It's said that worms poop have more predatory nematodes that eat these root feeding one's, they are also called as good guy nematodes.

WA state getting ready to plant garlic and hope to have more than a dozen tomato plants like I had this year, though all did well...beefsteak, Early Girl, Big Boy, red and yellow cherry tomatoes, and forgotten the others. Fermenting them sounds good as well as canning and drying them which I do. Still taking notes and learning a lot from you and appreciate your dedication to your garden, besides your wit and charm! "You breaking rules; how unusual!" My family gets a kick out of you big time;with love and respect, I thank you.👵🌲🐕💖

Thank you for sharing your experience. Over the years in growing tomatoes here in the states, my biggest problem was birds eating the tomatoes, that problem is now solved. I hanged small red Christmas bulbs on the tomatoes plants early before the tomatoes turned red, the birds would come and peck at the bulbs and realize they weren't real, so by the time the real tomatoes turned red they left the tomatoes a lone. :-)

Greetings, I’ve been following your videos since I was 17 (I’m 22 now) and since I started to watch your videos, I started working your methods on my garden. I’m from Puerto Rico, an island that has a 100% tropical climate, so we can grow and harvest most of the fruits and veggies through all the year. Here is yet another way to preserve tomatoes - I blend the tomatoes into a liquid, then place the liquid on fruit roll up trays (I think that's what they are called) in my dehydrator. After they are completely dried, I blend them into powder in a Vitamix - you might be able to use a food processor. Ta-Da....Tomato Powder !! (which is quite pricey to buy) You can add a little water to some to make instant tomato paste, add to soup, or stock, pasta dough, bread dough - your imagination is the limit !!! To store, I freeze mine in Mason jars. I really love your videos !!

I powder tomato, onion, garlic, eggs, apples, pineapple and egg shells ... Going to try daikon radish ... Just dehydrating apples, pineapple chunks, onions, cilantro, mint, peppers, strawberry puree and going to try shredded potatoes ... All get vacuum packed in half pint and quart wide mouth jars ...

I am curious, how do you dehydrate eggs? - Just like fruit on trays ? I once dried, and powdered a can of creamed corn -it was delicious !! Thank you for your insight.

I've found that using sunflowers is the best way for me to stake tomatoes. I'll typically plant sunflowers 12 to 18 inches staggered from from my tomatoes. The sturdy stalks allows tomato plants to share the "living stakes". As needed I remove leaves from the sunflowers to allow light. In many cases I'll leave the leaves on in the west Southwest for relief of the hottest sun. I'm growing sunflower seeds and increasing soil mechanics along with a huge amount of compost.

I've done it with half runners but this is a fantastic idea. If I remember this tip next year, I will single stem my Tommy Toes up mammoth sunflower.

Mark, I want to thank you for setting me off on a journey of growing my own and trying to be as self sufficient as is possible living in an apartment with a great balcony. I am really lucky to have a huge rooftop balcony. Until this year I grew nothing but flowers and shrubs. But this year I hot a "square meter" frame for growing my own stuff from seed. I wanted to go completely organic and natural, both using organic seeds as well as soil and pesticide free. It is proving to be one of the most exhilarating and rewarding things I have done. It has lead me on to getting fruit trees and herbs. I have been seriously bitten by the bug. Not only has it given me a fantastic new hobby but it has also helped me enormously to deal with serious psychological issues. You are not just a gardener, Mark, but you have been a kind of therapist, probably not only to me, but I'm sure to many others too. Thank you so much.

An excellent living mulch you can use is white clover. They have very shallow roots so they don't compete with your crop plants, they prevent water loss to evaporation, they prevent soil loss to wind erosion, and they draw nitrogen out of the air and into the soil to help feed your crop plants. Plus, not only do they attract pollinators, when you're ready to clear the bed for winter or if you want to cull it back, they make excellent roughage for grazing animals.

1. Plant a number of varieties at different times! 2. Smaller cherry varieties have a shorter time to harvest, 55 days while larger varieties are 95 days.

Great episode mate always love watching the show. If you have more nematode problems try growing mustard in with your vegie patch, let it go to seed and mix it into your soil. Once the seed decomposes it realeases a natural chemical that will sort those nematodes out. Happy growing and keep up the good work

I grew some basic cherry tomatoes in Virginia, they grew so well I had so many I randomly tossed some around for fun one day and in just a few weeks I had new tomato plants growing all over mine and my neighbors yards. XD They grew very well when some found their way into the water ditches. They're everywhere but I love it just for the nice smell they make.

Tip 6, don't put them in the fridge. The minute you do, the natural sugars start breaking down similar to how wine starts to deteriorate after its opened. Taste them for yourself. Pick 2 off the vine and put one in the fridge. You will notice a massive difference. That's why you rarely find tomatos in the fridge in the supermarket. Great video mate... Love your work.

To help eliminate the nematode problem, try growing marigolds with your tomatoes. They are an excellent companion plant for solanacea plants. (tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, etc) Marigolds are a natural nematodicidal (sp?) plant. While all marigolds will help control nematodes, there are two varieties that are more effective than the others. One variety is called Golden Guardian. I can't remember the name of the other variety though. Cheers!

You should try to use the green tomatoes to ferment them with cucumber a bit of celery and a small watermelon... delicious 🙂

Bought some from a Coles punnet, and just planted the contents of the punnet without breaking it up. They're much happier than the ones that I've seperated before. The stalks might be shorter, but they're also thicker and straighter without trellis or stakes. The ones that I seperated from each other are a lot weedier in appearance. Am going to try companion planting next season. Onion, garlic, beetroot, and marigold. I've been using my old potato leaves and stems for mulching, and might try this with the tomatoes next season.

My parrents usually have a few tomato plants each year. This year however I wanted to help them (I dont have a garden so it seemed like the next best thing). Used alot of knowledge about soil I got from this channel and holy moly did we get tomatoes. I have never eaten this much tomato sauce before and it tastes amazing

I live in Kashmir and we always grow a lot of tomatoes more than we can eat in a season. But, lately, we've been taking some of our tomatoes to the nearest factory where they make tomato juice from our tomatoes so we can use them later in winter.

I always grow garlic (before) where I am going to grow my tomatoes and ALWAYS plant Marigolds at the base of my tomato plants to stop Nematodes.., I don't normally bother with plant rotaion and companion planting..., but this has worked for years for me, Apparently Nematodes hate the smell/taste. (I believe onions work aswell.., but I don't grow onions).

Nice work! I manage (usually) to beat the fruit fly by tying fruit fly exclusion mesh bags over all the flower clusters as soon as they appear. Assist fertilisation by shaking the flowers each day until tomatoes grow. I harvest large Mary Italian heritage type when ripe on the vine, and the fly doesn't get a look in. I'll post a video on this soon.

best tip for everyone trying to grow tomatoes in less than favourable climate: look for varieties that have been used in the area for generations, they have the best chance to survive and yield a decent harvest, plus they usually taste way better than modern ones - and have more vitamins and nutrients too!

In Albania, we ferment tomatoes when they're still green and firm. They taste delicious and maintain the firmness.

I start growing tomatoes because of you. The one that I buried with a fish head is slow growth but the leaves are so green, fat tomato and tomatoes are all coming out. The other one I use eggshell and ground coffee (just experiment), it grow taller and faster but not as bushy as the first one. Thanks for your enthusiasm and humor.

Some birds attack to tomatoes because they're thirsty. Set up a birdbath nearby, buy one or make your own.

Love your videos. Always thought you should do an April Fools episode. How to prepare a ton of cane toads. Say something like, “I like to prepare them but the wife loves to walk out to the garden, bend down and grab one, and eat it right there. Says the screams make ‘em taste better. I previously read that for tomatoes you need to wait 3 years to replant in same beds. I use a lot of pots and swapped them this year but this would be hard to do year to year. I like your every other year idea.

Your videos are awesome and motivated me to grow my own vegetables, I live in Belgium and we have a maritime climate so the tropical stuff won't grow here.However I had quite a successful yield last season (tomatoes, zucchini and many other squash, bell peppers, hot peppers, kale,oregano, basil) especially my green tomatoes ( evergreen variety and limetto cherry tomatoes) they grew like crazy for a reason unknown to me. Please keep up to hard work you put into these videos, they motivate many of us.

Thank you for these tips, this will be my first season growing on my own. I have helped with both my parents and my in-laws gardens but as a first time home owner now, I am ready to get started on my own! I couldn't agree with you more about fresh grown tomatoes vs store bought. They are always so disappointing from the grocery store.

Tomatoes and corn-on-the-cob are my favorite garden products, but I've only ever planted tomatoes..with not very exciting results. But I DO enjoy watching your videos, your beautiful containers and soil plots. What a satisfying life.. ...Hard, BUT satisfying! : )

Mark, you've got me fizzing for next season now! I think I drooled the whole way through this video 😆🤤🤤🤤🍅🍅🍅. I'm currently enjoying doing the garden "shop" of my tomato crop for my breakfast every morning too, but you've got me excited to try out more flavours and upscale for next season!!

Always, great info. I grow in 5 gallon buckets. I add fertilizer and Epsom salt when planting. Because I live in Florida I like to grow small to medium varieties. I also companion plant. One winter I had problems with nematodes. So during the summer I planted the whole bed with marigolds. Save some for seed and then turned the rest over into the soil. Next season, in that bed I had no problems with nematodes.

I should mention that my tomatoes are in 5 gallon buckets but a few other crops ate in raised beds which suffer from nematodes.

Unripe /green or almost ripe tomatoes are great fermented they are a traditional pickle in Romania they are called "gogonele"

Thank you for these helpful tips. I grow vegetables in containers in my balcony. In an earlier video on tomatoes you mentioned a tip using electric toothbrush to help pollinate the tomato flowers. It worked!!!! Thank you again.

Thanks for that! I'm in New Zealand and thought I'd plant a few tomatoes this year for the first time, but now I have ended up with 22 plants in 4 different varieties! Great video.

@ruth campbell That is great, how many do you have on the go? I currently have mortgage lifters, Cherokee purple, Zapotec and now the long truss. Mine have been loving the sun too, it definitely seems like the right time to get them out in it.

Concerning the tops of the carrot 🥕 tops. The Japanese make tempura from the carrot tops. They are very tasty. Your container garden is good idea. We follow your examples.

Growing here in sc multiple types of tomatoes and my problem was having ants eat up my fruits and veggies just at the moment the plants were about to be ripe. And yes the garden was inground not raised. Great videos!!

I've experimented keeping a couple suckers on the plant where they are not in the way and I swear they prevented the yellow tomatoes from splitting... My thoughts were that the sucker stems will suck up extra water so the fruit grew a bit more evenly instead of absorbing too much water after a heavy rain.... I've tried everything but I think this worked a bit better I will keep this in mind next year

I always had fabulous tomatoes by dumping my grass clippings on my veggie beds in the rainy season. The clippings broke down very rapidly and I continued doing it through the summer to act as a mulch. It kept out the weeds and my harvest was huge in size and number of fruits. Tomatoes are fruits. I use cages and grow the bush varieties which become a meter high and wide. My mom loves the yellow low acid varieties best. 2 plants supplied our needs and both families living near us. We live in upstate New York where the growing season is late May until the beginning of September so we picked up small plants from a local nursery. We love having our own organic foods.

Another Great video Mark- my tomato harvest (still going) has been just amazing this year so we are very lucky here in Sub-tropical climate. Having a little bother with zucchini though as I have no pollinators & have been hand pollinating. Would love to see how you sun dried those tomatoes & packed them in oil please. I'm loving your channel. I just found it recently and can't get enough. I live in South Florida..considered the sub tropics. I have found a tomato called "Sweet 100". My grandchildren eat them right off the vine..if you chill them they are very sweet..I absolutely love them and recommend them. I originally started gardening and put in a Butterfly garden..it's been wonderful watching the small one's excitement to get out and see how there's plants are doing. I still have a lot of your videos to catch up with..and loving every moment.
