Today we're comparing my two favorite lenses: the Canon RF 28-70 f/2.0 and Canon RF 85mm 1.2L!
We're going to find out if you REALLY need to bring both of these on a wedding day OR if you can get away with ONLY the 28-70!
NOTE: All test shots were shot at f/2.0 on both lenses!

I recently shot with the RF 28-70 *and* the RF 50mm f/1.2 and you can definitely tell the difference. Those RF primes are just in a league of their own, and that's saying a lot against the RF 28-70, which is a beast in its own right. I've shot with the RF 85mm f/1.2 as well but that focal length is a little too close for most of my situations. The 50mm is more ideal for me, but yeah, those lenses are like cheat codes for a photographer. In a time where pro photos are becoming increasingly indistinguishable from iPhone photos, those RF primes really make the case for pro cameras.

50mm -vs- 85mm decided the subject to background proportions relative to subject. This one of the reasons why a 50mm lens is considered a "normal" lens for 35mm or full frame digital as it delivers subject to background proportions similar to human vision. Longer than normal focal lengths like the 85mm tends to bring the background "into" the subject by creating the perception of being larger than would be perceived with normal human vision. Longer the focal length, stronger this effect.

It's worth noting that the depth of field at 70mm f/2 is actually shallower ("more bokeh", I guess) than the 50mm f/1.2 for the same subject distance.
@Edwin1947D

It was very easy to see the difference - but I actually liked the look of the backgrounds with the 28-70mm at 70mm - there was plenty of separation but with a little better sense of the background - I don't see that as a negative at all

Definitely personal preference! You could always increase your aperture on the 85mm if you want a less blurry background but still get the extra compression!

For the staged shots 85 is the choice. However the ceremony is key for many. You will get more shots with the 28-70. You won’t have to move your feet as much. Most clients couldn’t tell the difference. The look of the 28-70 will far exceed what most photographers are using (24-70) IMHO. I used to carry a lot of lenses. Now two bodies w/28-70 and 135f2

Again, very informative for an amateur toying with bigger photographic dreams. While I shoot with a Nikon DSLR, it's reassuring to know that I can still get quality shots with my current gear while planning for what to purchase first if I do decide to go mirrorless. And, like so many of the comments below, most people (clients) will still be thrilled with the results. Thanks for continuing to put together such engaging and helpful material. Here's my take on it. As a wedding photographer, of course I like the 85 vs the 70. But I think, as the video pointed out towards the end, clients who receive the 28-70's 70mm portrait will be thrilled. I only shoot primes, even for ceremonies, but I'll be the first to say that if a photographer uses a 28-70, and the client isn't happy with the photos, it really has little to do with the gear itself.

Hmm recently I did a family shoot and started with the 28-70, but after I got a few wider shots switched to the 85 and it stayed on for the rest of the shoot! Definitely fun when you have the time and the space to use it! The RF 1.2s are also amazing at focusing regardless of distance - I feel like my EF would sometimes miss at distance so mainly used it for portrait style shots

It's great to hear the perspective from a wedding photographer. I'm on the opposite spectrum as a architectural/real estate photographer so my line up is different for my R6 and EOS R. My must have and use every single day lens is the 15-35 RF, then the 24-70 RF. Your video has brought up questions though on my next RF. I was leaning towards the 70-200 F4 RF for tighter shots ( I don't need super shallow depth), but now I see the 85mm I wonder if I could put that to use. BTW...subscribed to your channel a while back. Keep up the good work!

I'm a little late on getting into the R system and RF glass, but this was super helpful as I've been stuck for DAYS on whether or not to get a versatile zoom that's GREAT or the AMAZING 85. Tried both in a store and my brain tells me to get the 28-70 for versatility but my heart tells me the 85 because even in test shots in a random store it was incredible. Canon may have some weird quirks about them but WOW do they make good glass.

I have majority of the RF L line except the 28-70. I decided to pick up the the 24-105 as a temporary substitute until I'm ready to pick up the 28-70. I find the kit lens to be be great in a pinch at weddings with smaller venues where my 85 is harder to work with. In the past I would typically default with the 50m which I'm not crazy about but it gets the job done as well. I think my two favorites still are my 85 and 70-200

You nailed it with the 85. My 85 1.8 is awesome. I use the 28-70 F3.5 to F5.6 kit lens since I got tired of having my subjects out of focus. However, when I shoot a person or a couple, I always you my 85 and my Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8. The compression and the blurred background on the Tamron is amazing, a lot better than the 85. But when I am covering news and the like, I use my kit lens since I just want everything in focus. Thanks for posting this.

(Compared to ef 24-70 2.8 v ef 85 1.2) making editing between the 2 lenses much nicer work flow wise in tricky lighting situations - also makes it easier to shoot at 1.2 in full daylight without needing an ND - my next planned lens is a 35 DS :)))

Thank you! Thank you! This was a mind-blowing distinction. The part which was really interesting is that you use f/2.0 for the 85mm also. Since both are among Canon's "best foot forward" lenses, this comparison is somewhat a prime vs zoom evaluation, because the difference seems more than 70 vs 85, especially the full-body images. Which raises the question of doing the same comparison with the 50mm and 35mm, and perhaps including images of those wide open as well? I need more prime lens validation! :-D

I loved this video, Katelyn (and Ty)! the 28-70 F2 is my absolute favorite lens. This is coming from a guy who's always been partial to longer focal lengths and always thought I'd prefer the 70-200 F2.8. I definitely do love my RF 70-200 F2.8 lens and between those two lenses I really feel I'm ready for everything. However, there seems to be something absolutely magical about the 85mm prime, especially the RF 85mm F1.2; this video only further proves that point. It's not as high on my priority list to get yet because, as you said, it is a luxury lens, and there's other gear I want/need before that, but eventually I want that lens!

Really enjoyed your 3 RF28-70 F2 videos, equally relieved it didn;t kill the RF85 magic. I'm currently agonising over the RF50 vs RF28-70 (Sold my RF24-70 no character, and sold my RF70-200 as the RF85 won out for me. I just do portraits so its either RF15-35 (love the ultra wide crazy portrait look and RF50 or go the RF28-70 route....

I totally agree with you! And it’s funny because the first video I watched in your channel was the one where you suggest the prime lenses. The sequence of purchase made so much sense to me that it inspired me. Then I bought the 28-70 but always thought about the extra and unique touch of the 85. I have the 24-70 f/2.8. I just got the RF 28-70 f/2.0 and I’m stoked. I had to wait 3 months to get it cause it was on back order. I finally get to use it this week at a wedding. The 24-70 has always been my favorite so I’m literally stoked for the new one! I’m curious if I will miss that 24-28 focal length? This is my first RF lens and I’m so happy about it. I do have the EF 85 F/1.4 & also love that lens but don’t plan on upgrading to the RF anytime soon because the adapter has been working just fine for me. Great video as always! Btw:: I got them all right also, I knew which photos were the 85mm and which were the 28-70.

My favorite lens that I take out when time permits is the 105 mm Sigma 1.4. It's just like you say, the customer doesn't see the difference but you notice it. Bad that you are always driven here by even more awesome lenses the 85 1.2 RF but also makes mega cool pictures. Here would be a comparison between the two lenses Canon 85 1.2 and the Sigma 105 1.4 very interesting because by the focal length the bokeh is softer again. Mind you, at half the price.

I love the 85 but my favorite is the 135mm f/2 if I had to pick one. Even for full body photos stepping back and pulling out the 135mm is my preferred look if I have the space to step back and shoot with that lens. I have an ef 85/1.8 so that's the caveat for that if I had an 85/1.2 maybe my thought process would be different but I still wouldn't get the compression the 135 gives you.

A really interesting comparison, nice one :) much appreciated, beautiful samples too... even of Thai!:) I can see that the RFs really are extremely capable translations of the earlier EF versions, it seems like Canon have thrown some extra special sauce into some of these exciting new lenses. And I'm currently umm'ing and ahh'ing about an upgrade to the RF28-70 f2 over my existing EF 24-70 f2.8 for that extra stop at f2... not for the extra light but for the extra blur... and I wonder if you notice the advantage over earlier f2.8 zooms in this range? I have primes too so I know what f2 looks like obviously, and those primes tend to go to f1.4 as well, but the point about the 28-70mm is the flexibility of having all those focal lengths on the camera at once, so there has to be a compromise somewhere after all! Anyway, would be interested to hear your thoughts...

I am soon getting my first mirrorless (Nikon Z9). I am discovering that the new lenses built for mirrorless communicate with the camera in ways the old lenses do not. I know the sensor image stabilization works much better with the new lenses (5 stops versus 2.5 stops). I suspect the autofocus is also better. On the other hand some of the old lenses plus the adaptor will work better on the mirrorless than they did on my DSLR.
@KatelynJames

Yes all my old EF lenses are much better on the mirrorless system with an adapter! The RF ones are slightly faster/sharper but I was super impressed with the performance of the adapter too!

Images from the 28-70 2.0 are amazing! But i have my old 24-70 2.8, and I feel like I can't do without the 24mm end of my lens. And there's the price issue to consider, too. But I have been thinking about purchasing the 28-70R lens, because it is an R lens (no more adapter) and because of the images it renders.

For me yes you still need the 85mm. I work with these lenses throughout a wedding day. 15-35mm for anything such as group shots, wide angle party pics and dramatic scenary shots. 70-200mm I use to get those unobtrusive shots from a distance, shots where its hard to reach places. My 85mm, gotta love the bokeh and also it has that edge the 24-70/28-70 do not possess and has a unique quality which I still bring along. Although these two lenses are primarily on my camera's I wouldn't shoot a wedding without the 85mm

It wasn't until over halfway through the video (9:26) that I realized both lenses were shot at f/2.0 for the test shots. At first I thought the 85mm images were shot at f/1.2. Hi Kate, Love your videos and enthusiasm! I LOVE the 85mm lens and I have the EF version. I notice when shooting a black and white object, for instance a model with a black and white hat and dress, that I got a red chromatic aberration on the B+W objects no matter what I did! That was with my 5D M3 and R6 so it's not camera dependent. Have you noticed this with the RF version?
@KatelynJames
@KatelynJames 2 жыл бұрын
Hmmm sounds like that just may be an issue with your lens. I have not noticed that same issue wit the RF version but I didn't notice it with my EF version either. It may just be something you have to deal with on those extreme circumstances. It may be worth it to reach out to Canon to see if this is a common issue or if there is something wrong with your specific lens!

Very nice review. 28-70mm can be a good replacement for 35mm 1.4 and 50mm 1.2 if weight and price is not a problem. As a wedding photographer, 1.2, 1.8 or f2 doesn't matter to me. What's important to me is to capture moments and be creative with compositions. So I would still prefer the cheaper 1.8 RF 50 and 35 primes. Hoping Canon will release a $500 RF 50mm 1.8 for better quality just like the 35mm 1.8.
