I bought a well used 2016 Tesla Model X planning on road tripping it all over the country for free with it's Unlimited Supercharging. Unfortunately unlimited supercharging is all you end up doing when you're trying to pile miles onto the car.

Sitting in the car for six hours vs. hour-thirty flight. Until you factor in the "arrive two hours before departure" factor plus whatever flight delays or cancellations.... and layovers... and the cramped airplane seats, and waiting to deplane, waiting for luggage. Etc. I'm road-tripping most times. Flying used to be fun.

Sorry, but I am not that lazy that I can't open and close my own doors. More options, more to go wrong. Watch "Geoff buys cars". He went up against a Porsche Taycan in a 14 year old BMW diesel. North of UK to South of UK 724 miles. The Porsche took 9 hours longer and twice the price. Half the chargers were either not working or not pushing out the power, plus having to queue to wait for one.

A 2016 Ford Fusion Energi (a PHEV) starting with the first 20 miles free (thanks to charging beforehand) will road trip over 500 miles before the gas tank runs dry. So, if distance with only short duration stops is your thing, it sounds like diesel or a gasoline PHEV is the way to go. I wonder, is anyone currently making a diesel PHEV?

Those falcon doors if you kept the car long enough and use it you will find particularly in the ice and snow - they don't like to open. You are smart to get rid of it before it snows and ices up. Then you won't think it is troublefree. It is great in winters for the front two seats, but if you want to use the rear seats and they are iced up good luck. Glad you have cheap electricity. In CT we are charged 24 cents a kilowatt hour, the most in the USA. No discounts for night charging. Electric company does not care and it costs a lot to run an electric car here.

I used ABRP to look at running a BMW iX 50 (these things are leasing very well right now and have a real world 320 mile range) from Vegas to Sioux Falls, SD to visit relatives. It was going to be 5 hours longer vs. a gas car. Plus, in a gas car I can perhaps go faster than what the nav assumes I'll travel, cutting even more time off that trip. Then, since the trip was going to be around Thanksgiving, I needed to cut the range of the iX more which added stops. Even as a retiree I still need to get to places in a timely manner. I'm nearing my expiration date!

It is going to have its drawbacks at this point in time. I met a guy that was unhappy after he bought one because he lives in an apartment (no charging available) AND the nearest supercharger was about 45 min away, not to mention how far the service center was! Just a tip for anyone watching, my son has a Model X and the Tesla portable charger that can plug into a 50 Amp (230V) RV plugin. I think that charges at 30 amps, so not bad. On a road trip you could figure out an RV campground to prearrange a charge stop with. Be willing to pay for an overnight campsite, I'd think that would be do-able. (For a trip segment with no Supercharger.)

Toyota has power opening/closing doors starting in the 1980s in larger Japanese market vehicles like the Crown, which are used as chauffeur-driven cars, airport limousines, etc. And the issue with Teslas isn’t their reliability - like Most EVs they’re reliable, it’s the difficulty getting parts when they do break, plus the poor build quality

Sounds like you bought the Model X to create content, and gain points with your sister. There is a Tesla fast charger at 5002 S. Main Street, Joplin, MO that would speed up your trip to Eureka Springs. Driving 2 hours, and taking a 20 minute break isn't so bad. I try to leave less than 30 miles range, as Tesla chargers have never failed me, and long road trips are way easier with Tesla's FSD driving enhancements. Change is hard, but you should give it a bit more effort.

Ah You probably should have known going into it. It's an Electric SUV. Teslas are for drivers that like to stop every hour half to 2 hours. That's kind of the best part lol. Stopping to hang out and walk around for 15-30mins. Usually by time you scratch your butt and go to the bathroom. Almost time to take off again. It's not for people that want to do 2 hours to 3 hour trips. You'd need some extended range Tesla/ sedan to attempt that. Here on the East Coast. Usually always have the chargers at malls or cool destinations to stop at.

"doesn't check" - didn't have to.... he already knew he was screwed before he brought it home. Most "normal" people (meaning they have one car that has to do most things) would check and do the research to see if it's possible or practical to own an EV - those that can have an EV as an extra vehicle or have a very short commute or DC fast charging nearby it's no big deal.

@@Scotty_in_Ohio This is the most common misconception about EVs. The reality is far from what you had written. Most of the people that either live in a private home or have a private parking with a Level 2 charger are the best candidates for an EV. They will most certainly have MUCH better experience driving an EV vs ICE. Why? Well 99% of the population drives about 37 per day. That means they can charge their car once every few days and be just fine, same process as you charge your phone at the end of the. BUT WAIT YOU SAY: I go on these road trips and yada yada yada. First, you can still do that, granted if you live in the midwest like JR here, it is not as convenient but anywhere else it is no different than an ICE vehicle. HOWEVER, 99% of the population does not go on any road trips over a few hundred miles and when they do, they do it like once every few years. So this is equivalent of wearing ski boots all year around because you go skiing once a year. I lived with EVs for over 5 years, have gone on around 7 road trips that were over 300-400 one way range and NEVER once had any issues. The one time we decided to take a few thousand miles road trip we wanted a bigger car anyways so I rented full size SUV for that week and that was that. The amount of money I saved driving an EV over 5+ years I could rent some huge truck 5 times a year and still come out on top.

EVs entail a new set of driving logistics. Granted, you touched on road trips but that one time you need to go a few thousand miles with multiple drivers and you already paid for the car so why after the first experience would one want to deterioriate the battery doing multiple fast charging? I chuckle as I drive my 2011 Nissan Leaf still on the original battery. In my case I only drive short trips so only having a 24 KWH battery is sufficient for me (long trips I take my Harley). Maintenance on EVs is cheap but if EVs popularity ever grows beyond the niche marketshare the power grid won't support them. I'm really hoping Aptera makes it and if so that will be my next vehicle which puts Teslas to shame when it comes to range and efficiency.

Why should an electric vehicle ever need to have the brakes replaced? They should have regenerative braking.

I watched the Car Trek where Hoovie bought a Tesla Model S...... I think. And he said as a commuter car it would be great. But long road trips with stopping at charging stations, Not the best idea.

JR already has a Volt that he's added auto-drive to, doesn't he? My son-in-law has a Prius Prime that he loves (and should, it's a really nice car), but what would that give JR that he doesn't already have?

Yup and hydrogen powered infrastructure is 100 times worse. So the only real option is a hybrid. My inlaw got like 600ish mpg in her rav4 prime when they took it from columbus oh. To the Outer Banks. I drove my mdx and got considerably less but i also too the mountains and had some fun with the Sh.awd and the Mag ride suspension. The tune on the Mdx mag ride is soooo freaking sporty its was awesome to carve up some canyons .

I've got a 2017 MS100d, 0-60 in 3.5, 720 ft lbs of torque....30K dollar sticker price. Still has 2 years on unlimited miles battery and drive unit warranty; and it came with premium connectivity + the MCU2 upgrade. I wont be handing the keys over quite so easily....I think i've only greased the door hinges and added in some wiper fluid. For the money....there is nothing on the globe new or used that matches Tesla. I've got 110k on the odometer, runs new.....charges @ 100% w/ 310 miles of range. I barely pay energy costs to operate it... i feel guilty owning it. I wish i still had $5k in maintenance costs on my Audi which is just a hanger queen now.
