How Farms Work

We loaded up all of the steers and most of the heifers to sell! We decided that with the price of corn, it would be wise to sell the calves and sell the corn rather than keep feeding it.

Summer Schedule
Expect a new video every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday! (Schedule Will Vary)
How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a KZfaq channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin. Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like. These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

I gotta thank you for being willing to show costs and profits like you do, because it really helps people see what you mean when you have a "good" or a "bad" year. You made a decent number here today but a few years ago you showed how you actually lost money on corn, and I think thats really important for people to realize that farmers really do play it year by year. You and Travis have great minds by letting crops pay for crops and cattle act as a secondary income to pay for farm improvements/equipment/etc. This way you minimize your loses, such as your cattle issue this year. Thanks for the update! Looks like the cattle pen rework last fall is still paying off.

Watched that guy standing behind the gate and recalled someone nearby getting crushed to death that way. You might consider installing some kind of safety stop to prevent that gate from being able to go all the way to the fence. That'd ruin your day. A side effect of selling all the heifers is it would get rid of the mystery bull kicker.

Good decision With high priced corn it's hard to make money feeding them out. Especially if one dies on you. I would if you could make a double or triple payment on the cattle if at all possible.

Selling the calves is a good business decision but in the future, if you are going to be in the cattle business with a good quality herd, you always take a critical look at heifers for future mama cows. Rarely can money replace (on demand) good breeding stock. Good video.

Does Platteville include hemp seed for Fuel and food research? A hemp seed screw press dealer that creates heat in the fall winter for cattle, makes fuel and feed. Fills the mill so you can add minerals ect. The Fibre is also valuable. Distillate is good for humans and animals. Finish pasture raised non gmo hemp protein organic cattle. You could make your own insulation and shiv for hempcrete with a decorticator. Foundations can be hydro jacked. Either way, plenty of buildable lumber well worth the tear down time if the dairy barn needs to go.

@@heartwoodfarms9982 Definitely made a jump since I watched a couple days ago. I'm not a cattle guy but I wonder if the new grains trading limits are influencing much in trading swings on beef. Likely not, packers just do what they want.
