Hiroki Koga is on a mission to revolutionize the agriculture industry. He co-founded vertical strawberry farm Oishii, which grows strawberries using seeds from the Japanese Alps. The berries are exceptionally fragrant, sweet and have a juicy texture - and sell for $50 a box.

it sounds like in this situation they are competing with you in the west to see how stupid you can make people before you rob them. 👍 in the west they have way better Marijuana flowers than japan will ever dream of but they make all 10,000 of those better strains in massive quantities still.

The people who says I wouldn't pay that much for a strawberry don't understand marketing strategy. They target the people who are willing to pay for the quality of the food. For example, the people who always eat at a fancy restaurants.

I would say that wealthy people WILL purchase these rare QUALITY grown strawberry’s in the same mindset as those who can afford: Wagyu beef from Japan is the most prized beef in the world. High-grade wagyu can cost up to $200 per pound. The rarest steak in the world, olive wagyu, can cost anywhere from $120 to over $300 for a steak. Wagyu calves can be 40 times the price of US cattle.Jan 7, 2021

Nothing against good quality. But only if you know the margin you can tell whether it is a good deal. Everything above 30% margin is a rip-off in my opinion. My feeling is that marketing of luxury food is used to betray customers. Maybe comparable with sports cars, the cost-of-built of a Ferrary is not 10 times the cost of a usual sedan, but customers pay 10 times the price. Ridiculous.

As an American living in Japan, I can agree with the average strawberry (and other fruits as well) tasting and being of better quality than average ones in the US, 100%. I can't really say anything about the farming technique or the premium price as I don't know anything about that, but it is unfortunate that it's harder to get the same level of fruit in the US than it is in Japan.

Strawberries sold by small farmers in California are 10 times sweeter than those in the supermarkets. They’re only available for a month or two during the peak harvest season. I believe they are growing the strawberries vertically just to cut cost and avoid having to use pesticides. A vertical farm takes up less space, keeps the produce free of nibbling creatures, and environmental factors. That being said, I have a feeling that they may have also imported Japanese soil and of course the seeds of that species of strawberries to make them taste like that & grow them here in the US.
