This is the first video in a new series I am doing about selling journals! I will be answering some of the questions I regularly get on this topic throughout this series.
In this episode, I am talking about where to sell your journals!
Please let me know what questions you might have--either in regards to this video or selling in general!
BTW--I had planned to do this video as an IGTV video and that is why it was filmed in a vertical orientation. It was too long for IGTV, so I had to pop it in here! ;)
xoxo

6:32 So, about selling at a craft fair, I would sell kits to make the journal because you may have people that like to craft come through and buy the kit to make their own. If they don't sell, then you can still use the material to make one and sell. I would also have a few select premade journals for those that may want to purchase one already made and also for ideas for the kits. If you also set up in a shop and do the same thing, you could get a better chance of returning customers and even travelers. Plus you don't have to stay with your booth and you get more than just a couple of days to sell. 😊

Thank you. I didn’t know you could sell on Instagram. I’ll have to look into that. On pricing, I wanted to say how frustrating it is to see people selling Junk Journals and handmade ephemera at too low prices. It devalues them as an art form and it hurts those of us who market at a realistic price. By which I mean, recoups the cost of materials, cost of selling (fees, etc.) and gives a fair compensation for the time and talent invested in creating these one-of-a-kind products. I really appreciate your information. Thank you! ❤ Shirley

Hi Shirley! Thank you for watching! Yes, it is really hard to charge enough to make a profit when there are those who price so low. Just remember that if you want to make a profit, you will want your "market" to be those who are looking for high quality, unique journals and will pay a premium for them. And selling on IG is easy! You just need a PayPal account so you can send buyers invoices and collect payments. Ask those who wish to buy from you to send you a DM on IG with their name, email address and mailing address. And, of course, sharing your work on IG is how you can find your target market. Be sure to post often...especially video these days! Good luck to you!! 🤗💖💖💖

very logical saying, I agree alright not just due to external fees but 'mostly' for the very long hours + energy & also passion that are spent to make only one of these artworks & journals.. it may take at time months to achieve one!! Some earn +$20 per hour at some routinous everyday job, ..calculate this!!

So, make heaps of journals and have stock of empty/naked ones from cardboard boxes and book covers. I don't tend to use mass-produced single-use materials such as stickers and transfers and make a lot of my own ephemera from old books I find for pennies or free. I do decorate some of my books and enjoy the process and looking at them when I'm done. I enjoy finding my materials and have a craft shop's worth of stuff in my stash. I think the kit route is the way for me...

Love your video, Amy! You’re amazing and so kind to offer this information and advice. I’ve learned as I go with craft fairs and realize that I don’t charge for my time.😬 The LGB journals I sell at craft fairs take me hours and I had no problem selling all of them for the price I sold them for...and I realized that I priced them way too low considering the premium items I included in them (vintage LGB’s, October Afternoon paper, lots of die cuts and stickers and vintage ephemera.) plus all the hours I put into them. Live and learn I guess haha. It has taken me time and a lot of encouragement from my incredible viewers/friends, to start pricing my items more logically and charging for my time and quality items. I love creating journals more than anything! Thank you again for this wonderful video...it’s so generous of you to offer this guidance to us. ❤️ Amber

Hey Amber! I am so glad you saw this video! I meant to tell you I mentioned you!! Thank you for sharing your experience!! I didn't know what you priced your craft fair journals for. I think many people do not take labor into consideration. And when selling online, there are fees to pay, plus the cost of shipping packaging, and if running a business, money has to be held back for taxes! Then what's left is what we make! Not sure if you saw the 2nd video I did in this series, but I talk all about what you can expect to make when selling journals. I'm going to have a few videos on pricing soon! Thank you so much for watching and sharing your input!! Hope you're doing well, my friend!! 🤗💖💖💖💖

Hi Joy! Thank you for your sweet comment! I did 3 videos in this series and I hope they are helpful. As you will hear in one of the videos, it is really hard making any sort of living selling handmade (without sacrificing a lot of time and maybe your well-being!) and I decided recently to just do Kittywitty Papercraft as a hobby. I still have my Etsy shop where I sell junk journal supplies, but I'm not making journals or videos or classes anymore. It just got to be too much time and effort and sacrifice for too little in return. I hope you can get something out of my YT videos and IG. I spent a long time creating content (especially on IG) that I hoped provided some value to other journal makers, so maybe you can find something there that is helpful. I wish you all the best! 🤗💖💖💖

Thank you so much!! I appreciate your kind words! I will just add that the market in person can be very different than the market online, so even if they don't sell well in person, they may do well online! That's partly because you have. a much bigger pool of people to sell to online and that makes it easier to find those who will pay for one of a kind handmade items. If you do try selling at craft fairs, look for ones that feature lots of higher quality handmade one of kind items so you don't have to price your work too low. Wish you all the best! 🤗💖💖💖

Thank you so much for taking the time to make this series! I appreciate the honesty and the perspective from someone who has done it. I don't want advice from anyone who isn't a small business owner.

Hi Carrie! Thank you so much and thank you for watching! There is so much bad advice out there! You have to be discerning. And I even make sure to say I'm not a business or marketing expert. I am only sharing just what I've experienced and learned in setting up my business. Too many "business coaches" are telling people how to start and run a business, but they are really only good at marketing, so they look like experts and convince you to buy their courses and programs that promise outlandish results although they don't know how to help you achieve results. I've spent thousands of dollars on useless programs, I'm sad to say. I hope my videos at least give people some pointers about where to start and what things to consider. The biggest thing I hope I got across (and it was so long ago, I don't remember everything I said!) is that it is NOT easy to run a business and it can take a long time to be profitable. I wish you all the best in your endeavors!! 🤗💖💖💖

Hi Kat! Thank you for watching and commenting! Yes, there is so much to learn! You can do it, though! Just learn one thing at a time and give yourself a lot of time (more time than you might think!) to learn and put what you've learned into practice! I didn't start crafting until I was 44 years old and I wasn't tech savvy, nor had I used social media much prior to then either. I taught myself everything I needed to learn--photos, editing, video, social media, marketing--and just kept putting one foot in front of the other. I learned everything through KZfaq and Google! You can do it! Best of luck!!

this is super helpful thanks lots for sharing :-) I'd e so grateful to know & understand more about selling via Instagram atm, while I'm just going to make a start. specifically, how you might do this for international peeps. I'm in nz & before having an Etsy shop (or....) just like email with national sales, it'd be easy enough to do with bank deets, but not internationally of course. anyways, I know this is all beginning stuff which is where I am situated (almost there!) so starting nationally is probably a good thing anyways, besides doing summer markets, but perhaps for international it'd be best to wait for Etsy set-up? any advice is so welcome. thanks again for sharing (-:
@KittywittyPapercraft
@KittywittyPapercraft 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Liana! Yes, I totally recommend starting out with just selling nationally at first. And then you can decide if you want to even sell internationally. I've chosen not to sell outside of the U.S. and Canada because the shipping costs (and then the fees I have to pay on that) are just too high. Not to mention the worry of packages getting lost in such a long travel. I know many people do it, though, so you just have to see what works for you. And if you do decide to do international sales, I don't know how easy it is to do that through PP. As long as you can print an international shipping label, it should be doable. I am assuming selling on IG using PayPal is the same in NZ as it is in the U.S. I will share more about that method in an upcoming video. Thank you!! xoxo Amy :)

Personally I have not joined one, I feel like my work would be judged lol 😂 and you are right about craft shows I actually did that a couple of years ago, I actually had a multitude of other crafts and I did lower the price and I only sold one. Hi Ann! Oh, yes! I totally forgot about selling in those special FB groups! That is certainly an option and could be an easy way to test out the waters. I know it is hard to not worry about being judged, but most people are very kind and if someone is not, it is not about you anyway. Judgements are always projections of something people feel about themselves. And you don't want to not do things because of fear of judgement. Life is too short to play small! Love the video friend! I absolutely love your philosophy; I think selling should be as natural as sharing your work with those who can benefit from it. I think the issue many of us potential sellers contend with is the overwhelm we feel when we stick our toe in the water of becoming an entrepreneur. There is so much information and so many steps that it causes paralysis; begin where you are is probably the best advice I ever heard concerning such. You rock!

Why don;t you have any journals for sale in your Etsy shop? All I see are supplies to make journals. Lyric Lover also has an empty shop. Should I assume from this that journals just do not sell well? Maybe the money is just in the supplies?
@KittywittyPapercraft
@KittywittyPapercraft 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Diane! I only sell journals now occasionally because they are very time consuming to make and when I do sell them, I am very fortunate that they sell out very quickly. I used to release a collection each month, but they take so much time to make (which means very little money for the time I'm working), that I mostly sell kits and my online classes that teach how to make them! I would say the reason is just the opposite of what you asked! They sell so well that they don't stay in our shops very long and in-between, you can find supplies and other items. It is very hard to make a living selling one of a kind handmade because there is so much labor/time involved, from procuring supplies, to making the item, to taking photos and videos and editing and listing each one, that if one wants to have a profitable business, they need to offer the one of a kind handmade items just occasionally, and have simpler items offered more regularly. Please let me know if you have any questions!! Thank you for your comment!! 🤗💖💖💖💖

Thank you for watching and commenting, Pam! Great questions! I will talk about them in a future video, but wanted to say that yes, a business account is better to have for selling on IG because you have access to more analytic data and no, you do not really need an Etsy shop if you sell on IG! There are pros and cons to doing only IG or having an Etsy shop, but I think it's a good idea to test things out by starting by simply selling on IG! xoxo Amy :)
