Congratulations with your SEM. I worked almost 30 years with a JEOL 35. Jeol microscopes are very reliable. Martin

Wow, nice work! I used to work with the exact same model in my university for research. The still had the windows 98 to run the software and everything, which was quite hilarious. The images you can get with this machine (if correctly set up) are remarkable though! Keep on with the nice work! :)
@kubeek2 жыл бұрын
why hillarious? The machine is old, so the pc is old too, though maybe a generation younger than the machine itself. Most likely there is no possibility to simply upgrade anything in that setup. The way I see it the contents of the hard drive of the pc are about as precious as the vacuum hardware to keep it working. And in a similar way to devices with UV eeproms for code and calibration, the first step when you get your hands on it is to backup all that not-entirely-nonvolatile data from eeproms and harddrives.

You can also tilt the sample towards the SED. This will allow the spot size zero to resolve the best S/N

I have some Hitachi SEMs and JEOLs too. Diff pumps are such power hogs when you consider the heaters and the chillers. Have you ever considered retrofitting a 150 lps Turbo pump? Most of them require only a small fan to cool the bearings. It saves lots of money on the energy bill. Main drawback is the vibration from the rotor but since you're not really going to be able to use a W filament SEM over about 50KX magnification the vibration of a good turbo isn't a problem. A turbo pump is ready to use in just a few minutes.

what type of temperature control do you have in the garage? what type of daily / yearly variations do you have, and how does it affect the operation of the SEM...

Nice video ! I recently got a JEOL 6400 (needs some HV supply repair) - are you sure that the sequence of vacuum valve switching is OK ? Plus it's safer to turn on the HV with the saturation pot set at zero and than increase the curent.
@SamZeloof7 жыл бұрын
Good luck with your SEM. Let me know when you get it running... the valve sequences for each vacuum system operation are listed in the manual (blue book) so I'm pretty confident in the sequence of valves I showed in this video. But be careful because if you screw it up oil from the DPs can get into your chamber. Still not sure why my SEM won't pump down on its own. And yes, that is true about the filament saturation knob.

Hi Sam, This video was quite useful for me. I recently acquired a Hitachi S-4500 SEM from ebay. The SEM is similar to yours in looks but in much worst condition. All the cables connecting the column to the display unit were cut to ship the SEM in two separate shipments. I can not find the service manuals for wiring diagrams. However I found the manual and schematics for S-5200 model, which is very similar. So I am working to patch all the cables. and checkout the circuit boards etc. Hopefully I will see it work day. I do not have a windows 98 computer for the scope but I can use an windows XT laptop. Can you suggest where can i find the application program for SEM control? Thanks. Ram Engira

I recently just bought a similar SEM ( Hitachi S-650). I’m currently trying to restore it but don’t have a manual and the company can’t provide me with one. I was wondering what pressure the roughing pumps go down to. Also, what was the process for replacing the transformer oil and what type did you use? Great video, thanks!

I had this feeling you'd aquire a SEM. You sure did. Awesome! Impurities testing equipment; ICP-MS, NMR, C/S/? Analyzer? Really... wait... EDS would be more pertinent potentially... no pun intended. Way neat!

I'm not sure, though are laminar flow hoods useful and organization of workflow to prevent contamination beneficial?
@SamZeloof6 жыл бұрын
Yes, laminar flow hoods are very useful for this kind of work. I'm looking for one...

I was thinking since your work is more clean room and I'm thinking I'm going to make to work in front of just for soldering and electronics repair (maybe some other microscope work) where I already have an exhaust on a 6" hose. I'm more familiar with for microbiological operations and wanted one when I was younger when we used to grow shiitaki and maitaki mushrooms. Here is an interesting link of a range of designs (I like the tissue culture, though the ghetto is humorous and practical, though not for electronics work I'm thinking) where I was thinking having something with glove box potential for a front cover using latch clamps and maybe sealing up to perform other work with toxic fumes in and be able to control exhaust also. www.qrcodematrix.com/diy-laminar-flow-hood/

Looks like a giant Rube Goldberg machine. This doesn't look like something you can get working by reading a manual. How small can it go? Can you see atoms?
@frep4202 жыл бұрын
SEM tops out at 1,000,000x mag. STEM can go up to 8,000,000x mag and show columns of atoms. The newest ARM (atomic resolution microscope) can see silicon dumbbells very clearly
