I purchased one of the retractors from Phineas and just finished fabricating the half nut disconnect system for my SB13. The combination of the two systems, retractor and half nut disconnect makes threading almost two easy. I'm a total novice and now I can't wait until I have project that needs to be threaded! I've made a couple of practice threads, first ones I've ever attempted, first pass was nerve wracking, after that it was shear excitement. I can't believe lathe manufacturers don't include systems like this on their lathes. Thanks Mr. Whoopee!

Thank you. The two functions are independent but share a common stop.

@@phineasj.whoopee3301 isn't it bad practice to disengage the halfnut while threading because you could thread over the previous peaks? i'm new to lathes.

@@martin-vv9lf Not at all, the theading dial exists specifically to ensure that you engage at the proper place each time. Metric threading on a lathe designed for inch threading is another matter

This Semi-auto threading video earned a like and subscription! How does one purchase the retracting tool? Also, do you have any close up still shots of the mechanism that holds and releases the half nut leaver? I also have a SB 10 and it would be nice not to have to “reinvent the wheel”. Thanks

I love this idea. Wish I had one. One thing confuses me. You are adjusting the compound not the cross slide?

Yes, I'm old school and generally feed with the compound. I have these for sale for AXA, BXA and CXA toolposts.

The halfnuts disengage nicely! Seems like very little movement to accomplish this. I might be missing something. The spring helps. 😅

I don't see a feed knob on this apron, is it all via the half nuts and lead screw?

No, the feed lever is just not visible in this video. It is behind the handwheel on the right.

I am currently making and selling the auto-retract threading tool. I won't be releasing the drawings until I tire of it or they stop selling.
