If you are not trying to match an existing taper, but just making an internal and external that match, you can turn the outer one on the backside by running in reverse, and the inner one in the normal way, which lets you do it without moving the compound, assuring that they are both identical

Hey Mr. Pete! IF one "really" wants to qualify a machined taper (while still in the machine)... Just set up two dial indicators. One for distance of travel on the carriage. One for sensing change in diameter of the taper. Zero both when at one end of carriage travel and then record both, carriage distance and diameter deflection as you move the carriage. You now have the information for calculating (be it by ratio or trigonometry) the actual taper. Happy turning! Ken

Well each video I watch makes me regret not taking a metals class in high school. I was so into woodworking I saw no reason to step across the shop where the metal working was held. But watching your videos I translate some of what you do to my woodworking, I worked on my lathe today to make a precision fit candle holder for a customer. They wanted it to fit a battery operated candle but did not want a sloppy fit. Without these videos I would not have been successful. Thank you Mr. Pete.

One of the first lathe projects we did in school was to make a live center to use in a 3 jaw chuck to avoid removing the chuck. Of course that has to be turned every time it is put in a chuck to assure concentricity.

If you need a matching taper for inside and outside, cut the outside as you show here. Then with out moving the compound angle cut the internal using a boring bar on the back side of the hole with the lathe in reverse. But you can’t do this with a threaded Chuck or you may end up with a Chuck landing on your toe!

A couple years ago, I bought an adjustable cutting head (for milling I think), and it was an Italian make and came with the book in the box. It's amazing as I bought this at a scrap yard. I sold it on eBay, and the buyer was quite happy with. According to the book, It could be used for inside boring in a conical fashion. Another item I bought at another yard was an adjustable angle milling vice. It was only missing one bolt vice. After repairs, I also sold this on eBay.

Its been my experience that most lathes that I have used or owned always had enough compound travel to reproduce whatever taper was in the tailstock, mainly because I always make a center, spotting, and 1/4” drill arbor that way I don’t mess around with opening and closing the chuck, just retract the tool and swap it. Also I usually make a morse taper extension so I can make tapers with tail stock support, they can be bought pretty cheap too

To measure taper while in the lathe, one can use dial indicators to measure the carrage travel and the change in diameter of the part. 1.Determine the sine of half the desired included angle for a distance of 1.000" of travel in Z axis. 2. Setup indicators, one on the carrage travel, the other on the side of the part to measure change of the O.D. of the turned part as the carrage moves. 3. Zero out both indicators. 4. Traverse the carrage 1.000" as measured on the first indicator. 5. Read the second indicator measurement for the change (in halt of the diameter). 6. Adjust the machine to create the desired angle.

That inside taper can be measured with a pair of gauge balls, or large ball bearings, and a drop indicator. What you do is you set the large mouth up on the surface plate, drop in a ball, measure the difference between its top and the top of the workpiece, and then do the same thing with the other ball. At this point you know the diameter at two points of the taper, and you know the distance between those two points and the surface of the material, and it's just some trig to figure out the result. The difference in the radius of the balls, divided by the difference in their depth, is equal to the sine of the half angle. Determining the diameter of the mouth of the opening at the theoretical surface is left as an exercise.

I’m not a machinist, but perhaps you could use the same setting on the compound rest for the internal taper if you cut on the far side of the bore and run the lathe in the opposite rotation? I suppose you’d need a different cutting tool as well, but you’d know you were cutting at the same angle.

Mr. Pete222, I machined a 1" round X 2" long with a small short taper point on one end similar to a short transfer punch to find center at the chuck end with my tool post, this seems to works very well if this is an acceptable practice in machining? I have a new project to work on wow, I now bought a Bridgeport series 1 mill, for $500, it is another basket case like my 12" LeBlond Regal lathe was, I have got the 2J head in the basement at this time, I'm cleaning, de-rusting, and painting all the components parts now and should start reassembly soon. Like you, my shop is in the basement, and after seeing what a chore moving a BP it down steeps it was for you in your video with a tractor I spent last summer building a basement egress with 7' X 8' garage door access. I still do not have the base component down there yet.

I paid $1200 for my Bridgeport. It had a new mk motor and ball bearing lead screws for the X and Y. It wasn't perfect of course. I removed about a 1/4" of old paint before spraying it. Replaced the spindle lock and downfeed clock spring and recently the spindle bearings. It was in a friend's basement so I thought it belonged to him, bugged him for about 4 years to buy it. Turned out it was his brother's, one phone call and it was mine. To this day I'm thrilled to have it and use it every couple days at least. Thankfully my shop us through my garage so no stairs but I did have to remove the table (48") to get it through the two doors between shop and garage, which I did alone. Got my KBC 12x24 lathe, MSC vertical metal cutting bandsaw and a Jet bench top mill (which I sold very quickly) for $500. The lathe is Korean, missing steady and follow rests which I replaced with parts from Grizzley that worked after mods. The scroll in the chuck that came with the lathe was chewed up pretty bad and I couldn't find a suitable replacement and the spindle was not a standard size. I had a friend who's a gunsmith, with lots of machining experience, modify the spindle to 2 1/4 x 8. I was not going to learn how to thread on my spindle! I now have a 3 jaw, 4 jaw and a collet chuck. As with the mill I thank my lucky stars for finding the lathe for such a cheap price and use it quite often. I doubt you are but if you're in the Atlanta area I can probably be a lot of help getting your Bridgeport into your basement. I deliver and relocate residential gun safes. I have moved several weighing as much as a Bridgeport, some have taken extraordinary effort and creativity to go where the customer wanted. One required cutting a big hole in the man's living room floor and lowering the safe with an A-frame crane. That was fun!

@@renaissanceman7145 Gee thank you for the offer of help that a wonderful offer and I certainly appreciate it, but I live in Mentor Ohio, about 30 miles east of Cleveland Ohio. I have been waiting for the ground to freeze solid and good snow to sled the base around to the back of the house where my egress is on the plywood sled I built of it. That's the last component I need to move that is heavy. I certainly look forward to using it by spring. As a side note both my lathe and mill are from the estate of a gunsmith, they both had to be disassembled to be removed from his home basement shop that also had an egress door. Thanks again for the offer of help and for also read my comment. By the way from 2009 to 2013, I worked in the Atlanta area on a capital project of setting up a plant and liked the Atlanta area very much.
