In this Physics (Digital Electronics) video lecture in Hindi for class 12 we distinguished among conductor, semiconductor and insulator with the concept of valence band, conduction band and forbidden energy gap. Valence band is the range in energy graph where all the valence electrons reside; whereas, conduction band is the range of energy contained by all the free electrons. The gap between those bands is known as forbidden energy gap. When that energy gap is very large, the element becomes an insulator and for a small gap that becomes a semiconductor. When those bands overlap each other, the material becomes a conductor.
A conductor is an object or type of material that allows the flow of an electrical current in one or more directions. Materials made of metal are common electrical conductors.
A solid substance that has a conductivity between that of an insulator and that of most metals, either due to the addition of an impurity or because of temperature effects. Devices made of semiconductors, notably silicon, are essential components of most electronic circuits.
A material or an object that does not easily allow heat, electricity, light, or sound to pass through it. Air, cloth and rubber are good electrical insulators; feathers and wool make good thermal insulators.
