I got 45 minutes into this video before I realized it wasn't about Star Wars or its creator. I feel like I was tricked by the title into learning something useful. You win this round, Dr. Cooper, you win this round.

I really appreciate this series. I especially found this discussion of Lukács valuable - it seems that he and Gramsci had similar ideas at similar times (I don't know if they knew of each other's work or if one built on the work of the other), but I was not as aware of the parallel before this presentation.
@DrJordanBCooper

They were born only six years apart. I know that Gramsci does cite Lukács in the Prison Notebooks, but I am not aware of whether or not Lukács was familiar with Gramsci's work during Gramsci's lifetime. He certainly was afterward.

I have to commend you for all the work you are doing for this series on Marxism and Marxist thought. This is most enlightening and will serve as a handy source to point others to in order to learn what they are dealing with. Knowledge is empowerment. I also agree with you that as Christians we would much rather be focused solely on Law and Gospel but we can’t ignore what is happening around us. The West is becoming Marxist.

Correction: Marx and Engels are not deterministic, although they did believe in searching for "laws of motion" in scientific processes. If you look at Gramsci's critique of Bukharin for example, many of the arguments he makes against Bukharin's theory of historical materialism are backed up with quotes from Marx and Engels. This is important as well in Lenin's Philosophical Notebooks, which develops the Hegelian character of Marx's thought. So these terms, teleology and determinism, are in fact concepts that a good Marxist criticizes, in fact. The goal is to develop a materialist theory that can explain the world we live in, and that is open to developments in economics, culture, philosophy, science, and so on, but that is NOT deterministic.

What a lucid critique of Marxism around 1:00:00! Also, it's fascinating how White Privilege (and the various "privileges") is talked about in the same way as Lukåcs did the proletariat. You know, white privilege blinds white people and the perspective of people of color is more true because they understand both the oppressor's worldview and their own... but also if the particular non-white person doesn't agree with the activist, they are "internalizing racism" and need to come to understand their true plight (which, the [often] white activist clearly understands for them). Same Theory, different people.

In the original Hungarian, it's pronounced like George, but instead of the "or" sound in the middle, it's "uh", like G-uh-rge.

They are Hegelian so the idea you can completely get rid of Western culture is wrong. The idea is that within the western imperialist culture exists the proletarian culture and that by critiquing western culture, you neutralize the oppressive elements. You can never really start over under this worldview. You're always synthesizing the past with praxis

Your personal attacks on marxist thinkers are childish, actually very childish, typical of religious dogmatists. It doesn't matter who the thinker is, you have to evaluate IDEAS on their own merit. Socrates was an abhorrent fellow to his contemporary athenians and was so immoral that they had to make him drink hemlock. Mr. Bishop, if you want people to take your paleolithic stories written by hebrew temple priests seriously, you better start presenting something that people usually call A COUNTER-ARGUMENT. Pointing out the personality flaws of the thinker do not amount to the negation of his ideas and arguments, presenting a counter-argument does. Now, i know it is a subtle thing to understand, but I have hope for you. PRAISE THE LORD.

The interpretation of Luckacs’ humanism is just wrong. That is not what humanism means generally; “humanism “ and the “ humanities disciplines” are not synonyms. There’s much in Christianity that is sympathetic with humanist ideals, and there is a Christian humanism that dates back to the Renaissance.
@spcphd

It is also worthwhile distinguishing revolutionary Marxists from “the Left” and totalitarianism, which is also erroneously presented as synonyms or a slippery slope here. We should not forget that Democratic Socialists-who are also “Left”- were always considered the enemy of the Marxists because they were reformists, not revolutionaries and saw a role for capitalism and liberal political economy regulated-for ethical reasons-with social welfare safeguards.

Solid rundown but the subjective editorializing was, well, unsurprising Western Anglo moralizing and ignorance. Go travel and live with the ppl, especially outside of the cities, where socialists govt's exist, or even where they don't, and your "the working class doesn't support Marxism" assertion runs into serious problems. But you and your ilk won't ever do that. Also, would it hurt to pronounce Gramsci's name correctly? God forbid we ditch our North American "accents" occasionally for the bare minimum effort of saying someones name. Touch grass Doc.

Started to listen because it seemed like a fair treatment. However I was soon disappointed and I stopped. You seemed to be puzzled why anyone well-to-do would side with poor and working people, suggesting it may be due to psychological issues. A strange reaction for someone from the Christian tradition, which on the surface honors people who help those in need. Agsin you are puzzled why a Jewish businessman like Lukacs's father would convert to Protestantism. Have you never heard of the anti-Semitism that prevailed at that time? Sadly, Lutherans often participated. You laughed at the fights between factions of the communist movement. As you know, Christianity has a long history of fights between the denominations, including multiple wars and murders. At that point I stopped listening because your talk was edging into propaganda rather than a serious intellectual examination.
