Sen. James Lankford makes case for border bill, bipartisanship in floor speech

Sen. James Lankford, the Oklahoma Republican who was among the three senators who negotiated the immigration deal, took to the Senate floor Wednesday to make a case for the deal and bipartisan legislation ahead of a key vote in the Senate. "You can do a partisan bill in the House," Lankford said, "but in the Senate, we have to look at each other across the aisle and then figure out a way to be able to solve this."

He's showing border "encounters," not the number of illegals released into the country through "catch and release." Stop parole complete and only allow in for vetting the number of migrants that can be sheltered. "Asylum seekers" have no guarantee to live freely just anywhere in the US they choose. Demanding they remain in detention until the final disposition of their asylum claims, will end the incentive for economic migrants to come to the border and cut off the revenue to Mexican cartels and other human traffickers who are raking in billions.

Statesmanship seems to be a lost art. The Senate used to pride itself on the quality and thoughtfulness of its members. James Lankford is doing his part to resurrect statesmanship in the Senate. Congress has not been known for the quality or thoughtfulness of its members in my lifetime. However, that has changed on the Democratic side in the past several years. We now need some strong Republicans to go against the flow and do the same.

It is 5000 a day on average, 8500 max per day. For example if 4000 come one day they will all get in...and if the next day 10,000 come Biden will have the option of not letting in any (but he won't do that he will let them in). If it continues at 15,000 and he chooses to not let them in then a HUGE refugee camp will grow at our border.

Not true. Border Agents will patrol it 24/7, and the Bill gives these hardworking Agents much more $ and hiring more staff to patrol. You misunderstand the 5k number. That number is only what allows the executive the authority to unilaterally close down crossing areas etc. It's just the number that gives that authority. It is not "allowing 5k people"..... as if Border Agents are going to sit back and allow that ? Come on, gimme a break. Lankford is right: Progress over Perfection !

Excellent presentation by Sen Lankford. What is especially disturbing about the Senate’s failure to act is that it is supposed to represent the grown-ups in the room, the ones who are sufficiently removed from the pressure of biennial elections to give big issues the consideration they are due. Instead we have a Republican caucus who might as well be marionettes for a private citizen (Trump), an aspiring tyrant who admiringly describes the current Chinese dictator as a “Strong man who rules 1.5 billion people with an iron fist”. As a lifelong Republican, from a long line of Republicans, I can only say that the Senate Republicans need to look in the mirror and ask if they serve the people or not. For God’s sake honor your oaths of office.

The problem with this bill is it spends 20 billion dollars when Trump's remain in Mexico policy could be reinstated by Biden for free. Then the illegals will be Mexico's problem and they can wait there for ten years for their asylum hearing in the US, or go back home. Actually Mexico will send them back home. The Mexican president gives them a temporary visa to go through Mexico to our border and when it expires, they're deported.

@@user-gz6ng5cf3c You've read it? What's the worst section? I personally don't like that the President will have elevated power to use the border when deemed necessary, because it can be abused. But others are using our own laws against us, so it could love a good thing too. There is no better bill that has been presented in decades. People with better ideas should run to be elected, go for it!

@@Ricksdaname it still allows in migrants, it’s reliant on president Biden on when to shut it down and he doesn’t care or he would have used executive action to close it after his numbers got up to 1 million. We are over 7 million in now. Some republicans also suggested Electric fencing ⚡️ on heavy areas of migrant flow and that wasn’t in it.

Until Trump is out of the picture, we only have one party that's serious about governing. In 2016, Trump started directing changes to the RNC national platform. In 2020, they abandoned their platform entirely. The RNC literally has nothing but grievance to run on, in 2024... When we start taking steps, such as this, towards fixing the issues generating those grievances, they vote against it because they'd rather keep the issue than have nothing to run their campaigns on. Vote blue.

I probably don't agree on much the Senator has proposed since he joined the Senate. The bill should've at least been considered, but they also should've had at least a week or more to review. I do not understand why Congress, and not just Schumer and Pelosi have done this, but why Congress insists on negotiating massive bills behind closed doors, and then putting them up for a vote within days; sometimes even hours. Schumer should've given this bill more time before throwing it onto the floor for a vote.
