The French relied on huge amounts of troops from its colonies throughout its empire. These men fought and died to liberate France, and those who returned home thought that a graceful France would improve the conditions under which they lived in the colonies, which were forced labour or very menial wages, minimal human rights, poverty, apartheid - like systems in some places, etc. and many began speaking out and clamoring for better treatment. France's response was to wage war on its colonies in a manner reminiscent of German atrocities: mass detentions, crackdowns, raids and destruction of town and villages, ariel bombings, mass rape, mass murder, summary executions and other war crimes etc. France killed millions in the colonies that helped liberate it. Especially hard hit were Senegal, Ivory Coast, Algeria, Syria, Madagascar, Indochina (Vietnam).

@@curtisthomas2670 From what I've read a substantial amount of the SS ended up in the Foreign Legion post war. I don't know how true that is but assuming it is. That makes such atrocities make alot of sense.

Actually most harkis were brought to France But nowdays, their descendents are discriminated against by the descendents of Algerian rebels who immigrated en mass to France in the 70s when their country became a shithole due to France leaving

If you haven't already realized, most countries / governments throughout the years have always done this. Doesn't matter what race or political orientation. Most people in high positions prefer their pride and public appearance to be very selective and nich to portray how they are the best shoulder to lean on in times of crisis.

Provocateur traitors to who? The French have produced out standing soldiers, and commanders over the years. They have repelled invasion , and unlike the British fought their own government to bring in a better political system. They toppled the monarchy , unlike the brits who lost their balls to fight their government a long time ago. The French are far from cowards, but I’m willing to bet you are. As far as we can tell, the vast majority were volunteers, the Troupes coloniales was an all volunteer force, with three main parts, the native units recruited in the colonies, the French units recruited for overseas service, and the Foreign Legion, all were volunteers.

@@konstantinosnikolakakis8125 well there were some volunteers, the majority where drafted by the colonial government: some were pressed ganged from their villages, work place etc and where giving the choice to serve or be killed. This isn't to say that there weren't those that genuinely choose to fight based on ideal or whatnot, but it hard to believe all of join up willingly

I'm sorry but I must add something that seems to be systematically forgotten: when the Harlem Hellfighters arrived in the French army, they were impressed to see how much better they were treated than in the United States, and at the end of the First World War, some of them didn't even want to return to the US! France may not have treated black people in the most idealistic way, but it is still the western, colonial country that treated them best. Let's never forget that ! In any case, as a Frenchman, I will never forget their bravery and their loyalty to my country : RESPECT !

An important and unseen aspect of the war would be the "Malgré-nous", part of the French population from Alsace and Lorraine were incorporated within the German Army and the Waffen SS after the German conquest of France. I would love an episode on that!

The BFV story about these guys is probably the most intense and best written of all the ones in the game. Soldiers like these, fighting for a government that does not trust them, often have everything to prove and will go to great lengths to prove themselves.

Matt Bowen Except it's a complete lie. The French knew the value of the Tirailleurs, they'd used Tirailleur units extensively in WWI. Also, Tirailleur units were mixed race: half black, half white.

@@afroartist1086 No, the video conveniently omits that the reason France didn't pay the Tirailleurs their bonus because they were still recovering from the German occupation. The were in the process of gathering money when the mutiny happened, and the bonus was paid shortly afterwards. This is why Simple History isn't respected in the historical KZfaq community. Their videos are always missing important context and information.

My country used to be a colony of France. During world war 1, 45000 malagasy joined the army and 10000 were part of the 12th malagasy battalion. They carried important missions in Africa and even got rewarded by the french army. Despite that, the malagasy soldiers were still mistreated when they came back. Leading them to join an uprising in 1947 causing the death of 90000 malagasy. My mom told me that my grand father lost his uncle and his father during that uprising.

I suggest you make an episode about the Bosniaken soldiers which served the Austro-Hungarian armed forces during ww1. They were an elite unit and after the war, a Bosnian unit was the most decorated unit in the entire army.

Bismarck would be an excellent episode. 2000 hands went down with her, and when HMS Hood exploded, after attempting to stop Bismarck, 1400 crew perished. Bismark was finally crippled by the Fleet Air Arm off the coast of France, before being surrounded by three Royal Navy vessels, including the Battle Ship HMS Prince of Wales. An epic sea battle during which far too many good men, on both sides, made the ultimate sacrifice.

Apparently when the Tirailleur units were dissolved a lot of their former members joined newly formed national armies of nations that gained independence in Africa back in the late 50s. Some still served in the French army as individual volunteers in integrated Colonial (later Marine) Infantry or Artillery units.

442nd Regiment and 100th Battalion (aka Purple Heart Battalion) "Go for broke!" The late Sen. Dan Inouye's Medal of Honor citation is metal af. With his unit pinned, the guy charged a hill full of Germans, tossing grenades and spraying foxholes with a tommy machine gun. After clearing several foxholes, he took and survived a German RGP to his right arm. With live grenade still clutched his useless right hand (only continue to his shoulder by a few sinews), he used his left to pry out the grenade, and toss it the German who fired it. He then proceeded to continue fighting for another hour and a half while rallying his men to move forward. And this and the rescue of the "Lost Battalion" (141st Infantry, 36th Infantry Division, originally Texas National Guard) are only a two of many examples of this brave group of Japanese-American soldiers trying to prove their patriotism their nation despite the rampant hate and racism back home.

On one hand, that's the MG-34. On the second, the US military supplied the Allies with their weaponry before joining the war. Far fetched, I know, but a possibility none the less.
