Sennheiser MKE 400 vs 200: Which microphone is right for you?

There is no single piece of gear that will improve your videos more than a good microphone. Sennheiser has two solutions for content creators to up the quality of their content. The MKE-200 & the new MKE-400. We place them side by side to parse out which has the sound and features for you.

After you added EQ I actually liked the way they both sounded. I would have been happier with either. Listening to both side by side it's easy to hear that the 400 is fuller and sounds better but the 200 is still impressive in my opinion. I think if I had only been exposed to the 200 after some EQ I would have been pleasantly surprised. Thanks for this comparison!

@@vistekI like the 400 better in the situation you tested. But I need one for mother in law to up her instructional paper items making videos. And the price point for the 200 is better, but above all.. no batteries for her to have to deal with.. aka letting me do it 😂 and that my friend is worth so much more 😅

I have the 400 and love it. The small size and now that the 200 is on sale for 89 instead of 99 means I'll pick it up for my indoor use. Super excited to get it.

The 400 definitely represents the lower and mid a bit better. The 200 is a bit more crispy to my ears, which can be good for voice

This was perfect and just what I was looking for. I also have an Osmo 4 and I’m super curious how the two mics worked along with it? My fear with the 400 is that it’s too big to use without an L-bracket attachment, which isn’t the end of the world but then you can’t use the tripod with the gimbal anymore. I guess my real question is if the Osmo 4 can handle the weight of the 400 or not

Great video. I'd love to know your thoughts on the RODE VideoMic GO II compared to the Sennheiser MKE 200. They both seem like excellent options for under €100 - I managed to snag the VideoMic GO II this week secondhand for €70 and honestly at that price point for mostly isolated indoor recording, it's kind of mindblowlingly good. I'm excited to try it outdoors at somepoint, but for 90% of my current videos it largely fulfills my needs.

Thanks for doing the test. All I needed was that 10 seconds where around 2:45 where you switch between mics to hear a noticeable difference. Also, how much influence would the preamps from your recording device matter (using an A7Siii vs an iPhone)?

Could you recommend a decent Cam Mic for recording music live ?it’s for live street gigs (I think a shotgun would be fine as it would be directed at an AER Domino 2A Amp.. We tried using an Apogee MiC (just perfect for live ‘indoor’ venues but too clean for outdoor gigs) I came across a few cam mics on eBay that I thought may suit & well priced , sE Electronics ProMic Laser, Deity D3, Rode video mic pro & Sennheisers.. I’m guessing the Sennheisers & Deity maybe a little bright? Does a deadcat soften the high end detail more or maybe too much compared to a foam windshield ? I would still like to have a little street ambience. Thanks 🙏🏻

I need to have the microphone separate from camera/iPhone because I’ll be using it to record acoustic. I need a microphone to be directly over acoustic soundhole, but videoing further away separately.

I record in a quiet but air-conditioned room. I don't know how to edit the sound. For me would the mk 400 be better because of the low cut filter, to cancel the noise of the air conditioner?

What batteries would you recommend for the 400? Rechargeable or not and what mAh

Batteries are very simple to understand. Alkaline (non rechargeable) will have a slow voltage slope, where as rechargeable is a kin to the power falling off a cliff. Both wont work when past a certain voltage - so even this fact is not particularly relevant.
