Welcome to Sensible Secondhand Reviews, the series where we take a sensible secondhand car worth between £1000 and £5000 and put it through its paces in a very straightforward manner! This time we test a rather luxurious 2009 Skoda Superb 2.0 TDI DSG Elegance in East Anglia and attempt to avoid floods, test out the split hatchback/tailgate and sample some of the best legroom ever this side of a Lincoln Town Car.

Another great Skoda review, big fan of Skoda despite my current vehicle being a Seat. Superb aptly named, few mates ran them as taxis and raved about them, a copper pal says they loved having Superbs and Octavias, hated when service changed to Astra and insignias. The estate versions of all Skodas are cavernous.. I loved my Octavias and Fabias and would have gone Skoda again but the Ateca equivalent was still long way off. Travelling in the back of a Superb Estate taxi is like being chauffeured. There is so much knee room and the driver seems really far away.

Yes, Skodas and Seats are incredibly similar cars. Octavias and Superbs are ridiculously roomy for their size, whether they are the hatchback/saloon or estate variant. Happy Christmas to you as well, two more reviews still to come this week, including the Christmas Special.

First of all, thank you Paul, you are correct to be proud of your Superb. My sister has had the 1.9 TDI on an Octavia and the 2.0 TDI on a Rapide both with DSG and found them comfortable reliable and very well appointed inside. Genius Joseph, this is possibly the most Sensible of Sensible Secondhand Reviews. A hatchback that's a saloon, now that's clever. Also why would you pay a fortune more for a similarly equipped Passat that is smaller.

Yes sir! Very sensible transportation, but also the ultimate in luxury. Paul loves it, and I completely understand why. I don't think the Rapid had any engine bigger than 1.6 litres, so it may have been the 1.6 TDI, but the Octavia definitely had the 1.9 engine until relatively recently. I don't know why you would need a Passat or an A8 if you had one of these. You could also save a fortune by choosing one of these over those.

@@lloydvehicleconsulting I stand corrected. It is actually a 1.6 TDI and she finds it really good on a 65 mile commute. The Superb is a different animal completely. The estate is cavernous.

@@seancooke4127 , yes, the Rapid is almost identical to the old Seat Toledo we had, and so I know them very well indeed. The Toledo was also really good as a long distance car. The boot of the standard Rapid/Toledo is 550 litres, so it is not far off the Superb, actually, although the car is physically a lot smaller. The estate is a different matter altogether.

Must be one of the best value cars out there both new and used. Like you I think the boot is my favourite feature and I always thought the umbrella in the door was a lovely touch. When it was launched I remember our boss at the Skoda dealership put one exactly like this on the road as his demo car and spec'd it with lots of options, thinking he'd have it for a while, only for one of the salesmen to sell it in a week.

Yes, so many wonderful little features on this car! Paul has kept his in lovely condition. Definitely good to go for a high specification one if you can to have all this luxury. I like the look of the current Superb as well.

Yes, a bit like a cut price Phaeton. I think that the V6 was shared by both cars from what I recall.

Got a 2011 hatchback elegance 1,8 tsi end of may this year and have driven almost 8000kms since. It is a brease to drive and everyone riding infront or back enjoys it, especially with the amount of legroom in the back. I even ask my friends and family to drive it so I can sit in the back and enjoy the ride :) It is nice to drive and it has enough power to get you through and it gives decent milage too. Also, it doesn´t feel like a big car, it doesn´t feel heavy. The soundsystem isn´t to shabby either. Never had park assist and I must say, its realy something. With all its features it is a bargain.

What an absolutely brilliant review! The façade reminds me of US Buick LaCrosse or Regal (which is a Vauxhall Insignia), but all of that equipment for £5,000 previously owned? An absolute bargain! Everything you stated throughout the review I agree 100%! Thank you very much Joseph!

I like the thoughtful touches of the air vents in the B pillar, which is typical of Volvo. Everything about this Superb is just that: superb!

Yes, absolutely huge, bigger than a Vauxhall Insignia or Buick Regal! The value is astonishing, one of the best cars I have tested for a while for less than £5000.

No wonder they are called Superb. The downsides as you mention Joseph are the sheer size of the car, I bet parking in a multi storey car park is good fun. Good review sir.

Yes, that self parking feature may help out in a multi-storey car park, actually! I think I would probably go for an Octavia Laurin and Klement Edition as I don't need the extra space of this one, but I still absolutely love it.

I won't be making a habit of featuring cars powered by the forbidden fuel, but this did at least provide some content where there may have been none. It is a very nice car as well. I drive a 2009 Superb Elegance, same engine but manual transmission. Black colour with beige interior. It’s quite a limousine. I love it! Btw: you forgot to mention about the premium Sound System, which is doing a pretty good job

A lovely car, so good I heard you say the ride was not quite as good as an S class or A8. For it to be even thought of in terms of that quality speaks volumes. Skoda's are really good cars, so good one wonders why anyone would go to the expense of buying a VW?. I would have liked your thoughts on DSG (sorry if you included that in other reviews) but DSG is such a lovely gearbox to use. Great review, really enjoyed that.

Thank you, yes, a lovely car with extraordinary amounts of luxury and space for the money. I skipped over the DSG deliberately: they are lovely, but they do need regular gearbox oil changes (despite what Volkswagen may say otherwise) and specialist maintenance if they go wrong. I think that will suffice for now! Very nice when they work, though, as you say. I certainly think this car would replace an S-Class or an A8 for a lot of people at a much, much lower price.

Considering its a 7 series size and it was available in an estate you can easily know that there will be a lot of space

I genuinely thought this model was saloon only. That’s a neat party piece. Although I was surprised about the size of the boot. Wasn’t the Rapid/your Toledo rated at 550L, a car that is approx 40cm shorter. I thought this would be 600+

Yes, the Toledo and Rapid (not the Rapid Spaceback) were 550 litres. An enormous amount of space, which we miss to this day! Yes, this is not as big as some others, but still far more capacious than most of its competition. It's an interesting dual boot opening, but it does mean that it is impossible to fit a rear wiper.

They really are Superb and seem to be built to last. Lovely colour, cappuccino beige. I had a 2008 Fabia in that colour with beige interior! Although it may have been a gimmick the boot mechanism was a wonderful piece of engineering and probably was quite useful. Would love a petrol one, but in reality it's a bit to big for me. ( maybe a Yeti ).

Yes, I think I need a 1.8 petrol Laurin and Klement in my life now... It is a little bit huge for us as well, probably the Octavia would suffice. The engineering of the boot mechanism is brilliant, unfortunately it does eliminate the rear wiper, though. The colour actually suits it quite well, I need the beige interior!

Just found a couple of superbs on autotrader with 50-75k on the clock in Elegance trim for £5k I also think the Jetta of similar vintage is an underrated car, I had one for 5 years and only had the dreaded ABS switch failure.

This 2012 is £4,990 if memory serves me right which seems a tad high, We Buy Any Car value it at £2,888, but I now the dealers got to make a profit on it and prepare it for sale but it's only coming with a 1 month warranty so hopefully we can negotiate something longer .....

@@petersmith7126 , yes, see if you can get a better warranty. We Buy Any Car is notoriously unreliable in terms of its values, so I wouldn't set much score by it. Rather, if you can see what comparable Superbs are priced at elsewhere, that would probably help. I find cars for people on a professional basis, so if you do need any more assistance, my e-mail address is displayed in the video after about a minute.

Why are people comparing this car to a 7 series in these comments, it's not a super big car, it's smaller than a 5 series! Just uses it's space extremely well as it has a relatively short bonnet and larger back-end. Well worth over the Octavia in my opinion

The interior space is massive, much bigger than an Octavia, particularly in the back. High Peak Autos recently did a review of the estate version of this, and I don't think there is even now something else out there which offers this level of space and luxury for the money, although my choice would be a petrol model. I did very much like it, and would happily have one for myself.

This Superb mk2 is 4.838mm & is slightly smaller than the 2009 BMW 5 series 4.899mm. 2009 BMW 7 series is 5.072mm.

One of my favourite cars- such size, luxury and slightly odd styling which set it apart from the standard VW/Audi group clones. Better than the Mk1 which was a blatant rebadged Passat and now sadly the newer model has reverted back to just a stretched Octavia in styling

Yes, the Superb Mk3 does look similar to an Octavia, doesn't it? The facelifted Mk2s look a bit better than this, in my opinion, but it is still an attractive car. As you say, who needs a Passat?

@@lloydvehicleconsulting have to love a capacious saloon or especially a cavenous estate in a world full of SUVs. In this case one can control their enterprises in comfort, style and relative performance. As Furious Driving might say "forget a body in the boot you could get a whole cemetery in the Superb Estate"

@@lloydvehicleconsulting if only VW would allow the Golf R maps and mechanicals in a Superb Estate it would be unstoppable! But a Skoda that beats it's parent company cars would be unthinkable!!! There are pros and cons of the VW group umbrella 😭

Iike most Skoda products I wouldn't exactly say it is handsome car and that interior is too dark for my tastes too, but a without any doubt a fine vehicle nevertheless. Great value for money at 5k and that rear hatch arrangement is a thing of wonder - why can't all cars of this class do that?

Thanks Gary! It is a fantastic car, I would have preferred a beige leather interior, but this one was still lovely. You can get them for less than £5,000 now as well. The split tailgate is some really impressive engineering, that is for sure!

I imagine the 1.4 engine with only 125 bhp would be quite underpowered for this cars size considering the 5 series size Edit:Because you said it was a 7 series size which means the 1.4 would feel even more underpowered

The 1.4 engine was only available in the base model. I probably wouldn't recommend that one.

@@lloydvehicleconsulting me neither. I have also heared that the 1.4 VW group engine has quite a lot of reliability problems. I have to say this and I am very sorry but the diesels are the most reasonable choice. But I would personally have one with the 3.6 V6 engine with the Lauren and Klement spec

Absolutely, based on the B5.5 Passat, I believe.

@@lloydvehicleconsulting Yes, first gen Superb was basically a rebadged Passat, MK2 ( my car ) however was based on the Audi A4 chasis, MK3 is standing on the multi purpose MQB chasis from VW.
