Sent my Pentax 6x7 for repair ... could it be fixed?

As I mentioned in a past video, my "new" Pentax 6x7 had a focusing issue. It simply would not allow me to focus properly because of a faulty ground glass setup. I decided to send it off for repair to see if I could make things better. The difference is pretty amazing.

No camera shake at 60iso? That is more of a testament to you bro. You're strong and you don't have skinny arms. As for me, well, i must use a tripod. My noodle arms get tired quick with this camera. But man, do i love this camera.

I always find it intresting that so meany photographers send their cameras off the repair. I am defo in a minority when I say I fix mine my self. But then I have always been hands on & love taking things apart to see how they work. I have spent meany sleepless nights tinkering with electronics. Always good when you get the camera you loved working again. Walking along the banks of the river is amazing, will be something I will do once I am able to get back to London again. That is the nice thing with these old mecanical cameras, they are usualy completly repairable, electronic ones, it varys wildly based on whats wrong with them.

So happy for you man, glad it was fixed. And yes this is reality of 85-90% of Pentax 67 out there , they are mostly salvaged from another ones. That’s normal I mean they are 30-50yo cameras they lived their time and had to be fixed and repaired at some point to continue to live on. Did I heard right , you said sometimes you have “cropped” images like not full ..? 9,5 out of 10? It’s called frame spacing issues. To fix that you need a CLA , or my free fix. When you install a fresh film inside set your START mark arrow under the screw (located to the right to BATT CHECK) and not under 120 dot. You need 2-3cm BEFORE the 120 dot . This way you will get 10 frames, thank me later 😎. I know these cameras very well

I love how you show actual darkroom prints. It's a much more interesting presentation than just cutting to a final edited digital scan. I spent many years avoiding shower shutter speeds on the Pentax 6x7 because I read the mirror slap makes them unusable, even on a tripod. But comparing with and without mirror lock-up on a tripod, I couldn't tell the difference even at 1/10. Now I don't worry about it and mostly use it like a normal camera, though I do still try use the MLU for landscape shots on a tripod, just for insurance.

Last year I bought a Pentax 67 and b.s.'ed around and didn't use the camera until the warranty had expired. I've got a sticky mirror and still haven't sent the camera for repair. It's frustrating, however, I have to remember that these Pentaxes are about 50 years old, a lot of them were used as workhorses by professional photographers, and it's safe to say that virtually nothing you buy today new, will last for 20 years, much less 50+.

I am glad your camera got fixed. These are beautiful cameras. The fault may have been with the GG being offset, perished foam perhaps.. I doubt if the mirror was at fault. The other reason why these cameras can go out of focus is the result of a repair job to fix the broken chain link that actuates the aperture lever. If the prism is removed before removing the lens the chain can break, ( it is at the top front of the camera) . To fix it, the lens mount has to be removed from the camera. Behind the lens mount there are shims that have been set at the factory to maintain the back focus distance within tolerance ( this tolerance is very very tight ) and maintain the optical axis of the lens perpendicular to the film plane. If these shims have not been reset correctly during the repair, the camera will not be able to focus correctly. Very nice photos BTW. I have the 45, 55, 75, 90, 135 and 160 lenses . They are all decent lenses. In the 70s these cameras were the work horse of fashion and glamour photographers due to their handling qualities

Awesome !!!! Great portraits ..... I guess the rule of thumb about slow shutter speed blur . On a 35mm format you kind of match the speed with the MM of the lens . So if you're shooting with a 50mm lens you shouldn't shoot slower that a 50th of a second . You have to transfer those numbers with a medium format . So a medium format would be shooting with an 80mm you shouldn't shoot slower than a 50th of a second ...... Ha ! At least that's what I've been told ..... Keep up the great videos !!!!!

Great images from a great camera. While I have never used one my friends that have them all love them. I've heard the mirror lockup on some are maddening as you can inadvertently lock up the mirror and then you have to take the shot with the mirror up as it can be lowered until you have fired the shutter. At least that is what I have heard and read.

I can understand your frustration, but it wasn't a huge deal because the focus problem was not effecting the image, just what you were seeing through the prism. You can always manually focus using the distances on the lens focus ring.
@ribsy
@ribsy 3 жыл бұрын
the issue was affecting my images because they were all out of focus haha. thats a pretty big deal. i know what you mean, but focusing using the lens markers isn't practical when shooting at f2.4 or even f4. i would never easily get something tac sharp. all good now!

This is a question that I hope someone out there can answer. I was goofing off with my old 6x7, firing off a few shots without film. The shutter curtain got off track and is jammed. Is this a costly repair that requires the camera to be disassembled to fix or can it be put back on the track by carefully repositioning it? I have done this with 35 mm cameras but have never attempted it with a medium format. (BTW-no tears in the curtain). It does appear that some tool would be necessary to grasp the end and reposition it. Since it is one of the first 6x7 P's I don't want to put much money into it, a CLA would cost more than its worth. It's been a backup for B &W film.

Many Japanese eBay sellers are not legit photographers or anything related in that regard. I’m Japanese and we always see a bunch of scalpers at local used camera shops. Their equipment expertise may vary greatly. Buyers be warned. I’d personally never buy from them and always go to legit shops such a Mapcamera. You pay for a bit more but the equipment is inspected well meaning basically it comes with assurance too.
