John Lee it’s a long history. It began with ships coming to port would fire their cannons to show that they were now empty and they had peaceful intentions. If you know where salutes, handshakes, and touching glasses after a toast came from this is a fairly similar thing. For whatever reason Britain started firing 7 shots when they’d come to port (some say it’s because in the Bible, God rested on the 7th day). This show of peaceful intentions started to become a way of displaying honor as well slowly throughout history. Along with 7, 3 was also seen as a very holy number, so they would fire a ratio 1:3 of the typical 7 shots-21 in total-to display the highest honor. They’d fire 21 shots to honor the British Royal family and for anniversaries as well. So by walking 21 steps and waiting 21 seconds, it’s a symbolic way of showing those who haven’t been found the highest of respect and honor. You’ll find the military is full of symbolism the more you dive into it.

Our Australian brothers in arms are some serious badasses down there. They've been instrumental in a lot of operations worldwide that wouldn't have held together without their help. While they may not have the Pomp and Circumstance that other countries have built up over the years they definitely more than make up for it in their actions. She LOVES shaking the hand of a person in uniform, and never fails to say thank you. It's little enough... too little... to do in gratitude to those that earn our freedoms for us, but it's all I can do. So... Thank you sir for your service. I hope I and my family are the sort of Americans you were willing to fight for... rather than ones you were willing to fight.

@rach d The very first Unknown was from WW1, and his remains are in the large Tomb. The remains of WW2, Korea, and Vietnam Unknowns are in those crypts flush with the surface. I found a copy of "Sacred Duty," a recent book (2019) by Tom Cotton, who served a tour at Arlington National Cemetery, and he details not only the Tomb Sentinel's duty, but all the other funerals that take place at Arlington.

They only have to mostly worry about first arrival being imperfect. Once the sentinels duty for the day is finished, the inspection is done to set the next one at ready. Any adjustments are to keep to the code of perfection. Jacket coming out a tad or a wrinkle wont be a problem. If it was screwed up at the beginning of there duty, then they should clench like all hell.

These Sentinels are so close that this outranking, or new medals that the senior officer has, is completely disregarded. Every Sentinel of the Old Guard is treated with the utmost respect by their peers, and the senior commanders.

Those seated in the wheelchairs are WW2 veterans who were brought there as part of an Honor Flight.

Some of these older men and women, although wheelchair bound, will STILL stand when asked out of respect. They stand with the help if others, or sometimes alone. Its really cool

Those people in wheelchairs were part of an Honor Flight. They already stood up in the cold, the heat, the blood, the mud, and the bullets for their country. If anybody deserves a little rest, it's them. And five'll get you ten that a lot of them stood up for the ceremony if they could. God bless our veterans and the people who make Honor Flight possible.

The guard clears the rifle before handing it over. The inspector then checks it. So it is twice checked on the spot and I imagine the the bolt is retracted to allow light through. It would be in an unfireable position at this point.
