On the seventh episode of the Expedition Log Series, we are in Annandale, Virginia at the proof-of-concept strip mall from Steve and Sam Choi. This place was the prototype and origin for the now defunct Seoul Plaza at the Security Square Mall in Woodlawn, Maryland. It has all of the aesthetic queues, too. This strip mall is less than half occupied, and not in danger of closing...but it's skanky...
The Expedition Log Series renders a documentary, and explores everything from dead malls, to beautiful and historic places, to abandoned structures. Come take a walk with me on this exploration.

What I like about your video’s compared to the other ‘Mall Dudes’ is the information you give about the malls. I really like your video’s, so please keep up the good work.

I need to agree with this. So many "Mall Videos" are just endless streams of some fat guy shuffling up and down a bunch of empty store fronts. You give history and context to the imagery which really makes for an engaging video. Love your work sir. Keep it going.

I love both the historic info and the additional commentary about store fronts, mall conditions, Idk, plants, neon lights,... I think both are important to get a feeling of what it's like to be there

In the inside of this strip mall was pretty depressing, the brickwork by the staircase up was kind of cool though!

Hey, good video! I lived down the street from here for 2 1/2 years and hated every minute of it. Though I did get cheap haircuts at that hair styling school.

What is the name of the song playing while you walk around at the beginning? It has a lovely Muzak quality to it but I can't get it out of my head after watching this, I gotta know the name so I can get it on my iPod. Lol

Technically sushi is raw food, so for me it would depend on more detailed specifics whether or not there was a substantial risk. I've eaten sushi several times a year for decades without any issue, but I did get food poising once from a mushroom swiss burger from DQ and also once from salsa from a Whole Foods store. Go figure.

5/13/18.....Log 7---Seoul Plaza (VA) is obviously successful after all these yrs because it is Korean. With diverse population in the area, it is only natural that original shoppers were Asian---primarily Korean & their culture doesn't change quickly. Strip mall laid out more like older style professional business/medical/dental building- --with inside hallways leading to various offices/vendors/professionals & outside "ring" of restaurants & markets. There are still some places built that style on the outskirts of Atlanta---in the crowded much-in- demand sections. Maybe the original Choi brothers are gone & have left this Plaza to their families with the express stipulation to keep the property for sentimental or other reasons? Lots of various legal & illegal business can be going on right there with no notice from the authorities. Just sayin'...... Video going down the hallways reminds me of a "rat in a maze" but still great & lots of info/history.

These owners (Choi Brothers) use these properties to launder money and tax dodge. Trust me, it's how it's been for a long time, not just in the US, but all over the world. I know because I'm part of it. It is what it is. My cousin, a trained chef had a successful restaurant. My uncle came to him and told him to start losing customers so he could launder money through the place. Sad story because my cousin had a great place, but family first. After a year, he was left with maybe six customers a day, but millions a year moving through the place.
