Thank you. Informative, clear, succinct tutorial. Having switched from Panasonic/Olympus (R.I.P?) M43 to Canon mirrorless, I need all the clue-in pointers I can find, especially vis-a-vis menu settings. (I actually know how to take pictures.) One immediate gotcha I encountered regards Apple's Photos. I learned straight away, to my shock and horror, that native resident software does not recognize the CR3 format ... nor innumerable others. If it is too much to expect Apple to keep Photos software constantly updated as new models are released, is it reasonable -- I should hope -- to ask that camera manufactures ensure that the software inherent in newly released models are compatible. Maybe too much to expect. Each year scores of new models are introduced. Reckon Apple cannot be bothered. After all, it abandoned Aperture, which I thought was excellent, replacing it with ... nothing. They left is hanging in the wind. Where is Steve Jobs when he is needed?

Hi Thomas, glad, happy to hear my video reached you. That's true it would be a big task for Apple. You can still edit your JPEGS that way if you prefer. ....Personally, I work with Capture One software to edit my R6 Raw files (a one off payment, not an above subscription!).... I have also just switched to 'Affinity photo" for retouching and adding boarders to my prints. It's a brilliant alternative to Adobe PS and again its only a one off payment. Very cheap and even half price this month at £25. IT might be with googling to see If Affinity photo can edit The R6 raws. Best, Adam

Format the card. choose card one, or two. Make sure you back up to a coupleof places first.

I am following your 2 card recording method. When I playback images and delete the bad ones, only my card #1 images get deleted. Is there a way to delete both .raw and .jpg from each card?

Hi Erik, very good question. Nope. I do not know of a way to delete the same images on both cards at the same time. I mostly shoot raw on my card 1 slot and playback from this. In fact, I personally don't like to delete images while out in the field, or on a job - I prefer to do this after importing my raws, in capture one, or lightroom. I use very large memory cards and tend not to format them too often as the card acts as another backup for a few weeks. Then when your images are backed up in a couple of places and your cards are beginning to fill. it's safer to format them both. You never know when that extra image may be handy. Hope this helps. Hi Jacek, Very good question, I'm 128Gb cards in both slots so will never really run out of space. these are by brand Kingston. Very fast, stable and fairly cheap these days. With a marker pen, I wite numbers 1 and 2 on the cards to match the card slots. It helps not to mix the raws and jpeg cards up. But sorry I couldn't answer your question. Maybe the canon forum will help you. Adam

Thank you. When i set up the camera with Raw to card 1 and JPG to card 2 it works. However when I download the cards the numbers are exactly the same EXCEPT that I get an _1 as a suffix for the JPG. Where can i change it so that I don't get the suffix? I just want the numbers to be the same except for the CR3 and JPG

Hi Tim. Good question. I remember being faced with the same problem. The underscore is to identify the colour space. "An underscore at the start of a JPEG file name indicates that the image was shot using the Adobe RGB colour space. When sRGB is set, there is no underscore. This occurs automatically on any camera where the colour space can be selected, so the rest of the file name may vary, and it enables software as well as users to simply identify what colour space was used and open the image with the correct colour profile. " Personally, I decided to switch my colour space to sRGB - as I only use the JPEG as backups when shooting. Then when home, I process my Raws. and keep my raws and hi-res jpg. you can pick either colour space when outputting your JPEGs depending on your print or web use. Hope that helps. Adam

So I changed it to sRGB and took a few more sample shots and downloaded them. Unfortunately I am still getting the underscore. So for example card one shows IMG_377.CR3 and card two shows IMG_377_1.jpg. Any other ideas how to fix this? I'm not sure if it's something my camera is doing or if it's happening on import when I use the Canon software...

@@SmartPhotoVault OK I just tried something else. Instead of using my cord directly from the camera to the computer I used my card readers. One CF Express for the Raws and and SD reader for the jpg and I did not get the _1. So that makes me think that it's something to do with file name in the Canon EOS Utility 3 software. Problem is that I can't find where

Any idea how to have files deleted off the back of the camera come off BOTH cards? Currently, mine only deletes off Card 2. If I grab the wrong card, I get all the ones I intended to delete, and have to cull them out again.

I believe it’s a safety function. You can’t format both cards at same time. Myself and pro friends have checklists on our phones to remember steps before each shoot. Maintenance , backup shoots, format cards, kit to take etc

Straight from the manual: Maximum burst for [Rec. separately] is lower if you specify different image sizes for cards 1 and 2. I wonder how much lower?

Good question. I couldn't say. Most togs I've worked with shoot Raw on one card and JPEG on the other. You could run a test. All I know is its mega fast for me using this setting.

On my 5DSR I am recording separately and JPEG goes to CF card and RAW to SD card. Also it’s set to RAW being the format that is viewed in image playback/viewing. I notice that when I use AEB then go to view the 3 bracketed photos in camera that it shows they are only JPEG on the screen. Any reason they don’t show as RAW like all the other images?

A well explained video thanks, Im considering getting an R6ii week, am i correct in the following as it will help in my event photography workflow I plan to record hi res jpg to one card and small compressed jpg to the other card for quick upload of thousands of photos. When you create a new folder in the camera menu, does it create a new folder on both SD cards? thanks

Hi Shane. Coreect, you can set up card one and two as you discribed. It's great for that. My methord is Raws + Hi res JPEG as back ups. I know other photogrphers who shoot events who shoot Hi res JPEG + Low res JPG for quick uploads. yes, I belive my camera creates a new folder for each day on boths cards. Bonus Tip. for events, I'd sugest you go into the menu and chage to file name to your inintals or date, 'SP_0001' or 'R6_0001' or 'SP23_0001" Also note: If shooting colour space SRGB the underscore “_” is used for the first position of the file name when writing to the SD card - That one bugged me for ages before workingbit out!!

Hi Darren good question. Yes can can now shoot RAW on both cards at the same time. Bear in mind that will be slightly slower then say shooting RAW on one and JPEG as backups.

Hi Mate, Yes those cards would work well. If you shoot Raw and JPEG, I'd use the 128gb for the Raw card slot. ...I like to write a '1' on my card for slot one and '2' for slot two with a permanent marker that way I know the file type when the cards on my desk.
