It turns out that the brain and the body aren't that different when it comes to the risk of toxicity from too much glucose and carbohydrates. As a practicing psychiatrist, Dr. Georgia Ede has seen the benefits of reducing carbohydrate intake on the mental health of her patients. She shares her experience and the unfortunate reluctance of some to acknowledge this association.
Georgia is also an expert in nutritional science, and she lends her take on incomplete and baseless reports such as the EAT-Lancet report. Is it science? Or is it vegan propaganda cloudy by faulty science? Georgia dissects the science and clearly shows how the report falls short of its "evidence based" claims.

In 2004 I weaned myself off of psychiatric meds. About 10% of my dose a week, one med at a time. When I got to half my lithium dose, I lost 14 pounds in one week. I was on nine prescriptions, four of which were psychiatric. Six months later I had no bipolar episodes and had lost almost 50 pounds. The most I was ever counseled about diet was to eat "a healthy diet" when I asked. I had been in bed for three years due to congestive heart , and arteriosclerosis. I was given six weeks to live on the last week of April 2004. If I'd continued the medical advice I was given, I'm pretty sure I would have died as they predicted.

I started Carnivore and am healing everything!!! Keto was ok but hard because I personally still had extremely strong cravings, but ez peasy Carnivore has saved my life. Down 81 lbs since April and that is crazy as I was not able to drop a lb in the last 27 years in spite of following low calorie plans. The weight is the least of it! My chest nonlonger hurts bad every day all day, my BP is great, my anemia and thyroid issues are gone. and soooo many more things!

All psychiatrists SHOULD know about nutrition since they are the ones doling out psych meds which are notorious for causing the dreaded "Metabolic Syndrome" which is the precursor to Diabetes. Some psychiatrists do monitor your weight and BP during each visit and order lab work periodically and tell you to "eat healthy" and "exercise"but will still refer you back to your PCP for treatment if your levels show you have diabetes, Hypertension or High Cholesterol.

Excellent discussion. Dr. Ede is so good on pulling apart inadequate research like the Lancet report. She's a real gift. There is SO much negative information out there about meat, it's really helpful to have this sort of "authoritative" research debunked. Good questions and additions from you, too, Bret. Thanks for the conversation. It really helps me believe in the new paradigm and detach from the old one.

Regarding ketones and mental health, I can only speak of my own experience so obviously it's just a single anecdote and not a truth but here is what I have noticed. I've been on a ketogenic diet for around 2 years and it helped my mental heath tremendously. At first I was very very strict on the carbs and was on ketosis all the time, now that my body is very fat adapted and I know that I can get back into ketosis in a matter of hours I'm a bit more flexible in my diet. Now it's not to say that I eat more carbs, I'm usually between 5 and 20g depending on the day so even my "higher carb" days I still eat very low carb, but I now eat some foods that while very moderate in carbs or even eaten in small quantities tend to make my blood sugar levels rise enough to lower my ketones or even get me out of ketosis if I'm not careful. And what I noticed on my mood disorders is the following : The deeper into ketosis the more stable my mood it, the calmer I am, If there are no external factors (something sad or scary or getting angry at someone etc) then I do ok on lower ketone levels but my mood is more "fragile" , I can get into an axiety attack much faster and with less stress than it would take for that to happen with higher ketone levels. If I get out of ketosis for a couple of hours and I'm in a good day it's ok, but longer than that say 1 full day out of ketosis and I'm a mess, I would say it's almost like PMS, just a world or look and I'm crying or yelling, a sad anecdote and I'm depressed, anxiety attacks are unavoidable, fast to rise and strong. So for me personally, low carb is great and all but ketones are what matter and the level of ketones in my blood has a definite impact on my mood.

I wish Dr. Ede would be a bit less conciliatory regarding animal welfare. Animals are killed in the billions annually protecting crops and veggies from herbivores... the annual rate of killing from eating a beef centered diet is arguably lower than it is eating some (not all) vegan diets. So... don't concede that a vegan diet is a more humane choice so easily. I'm reminded of this because, as a kid, I watched old farmer Gunderson killing baby bunnies with a stick at the edge of his garden. When he came down the ally to sell us fresh tomatoes I was never under the impression that veggies were 'cruelty free'.

After 30+ years of struggling with depression and anxiety becoming an increasing factor, chronic migraines 4 times a week and eating the nutritionists’ idea of a healthy diet, I was finally thinking I might need medication which I never took. I investigated it for a prediabetic and IR diagnosis. My world was literally turned upside down when after 6months of intense research finally convinced that ketogenic diet wasn’t dangerous. For the 1st time I felt like energy was brimming under the surface. The only way I can describe it is that I had cellular energy. I felt optimistic about things in general for the first time since being a teenager. I was careful to add B12, nutritional yeast, ate a tonne of dark leafy greens grown at home, apple cider vinegar, extra salt and lemon water. Went through the keto flu, but after 3 weeks had this amazing result. After a great deal more research and Dr Lustig’s recent work detailing exactly how sugars and carbs are actually toxic, I am convinced that this anti-inflammatory diet is good for so many maladies and useful therapeutically. It also fits with how ancient man would have eaten, especially when you add fasting and short eating windows.
@JezaGaia
@JezaGaia 5 жыл бұрын
For having suffered similar issues and having also found the keto diet an immense help just an advice I would like to give you : if your migraines don't stop or at least diminish to a "normal" level (a couple a year at most) you should be wary of oxalates, they're very present for example in leafy greens. I had migraines almost once a month before keto, then when I went keto it stopped for a while, maybe 6 months, then they came back but not the anxiety and depression, just the migraines, then at one point it was worse, I had almost one per week. I learned about oxalates, removed all foods containing it from my diet and have been migraine free for 4 months now. If you're interested in learning more about oxalates check Sally Norton on youtube she has many videos where she talks about it.
@webaccess11
@webaccess11 5 жыл бұрын
JezaGaia Thank you very much for your thoughtful advice and I am glad of hearing about it helping someone else. (For anyone out there, reducing carbohydrates reduces inflammation, which is what some migraine medications target.) My migraines have diminished significantly, but about a week in every month that I cannot attribute to the (my) feminine cycle, I will mysteriously have 3-5 days of persistent pain, though not frequently reaching the same intensity like before. I am aware of the oxalate issue, and generally do not have any spinach in particular. My dark leafy greens are kale, broccoli leaf, brussel sprout leaf, rocket, mustard greens, dandelion, radicchio, fennel leaf and mixed lettuce. I don’t have much of other things with noted oxalate levels either like raspberries, rhubarb, and legumes or beetroot. Thanks for the reference, I ‘ll look up Sally Norton too. I am also hypothyroid, for which I add iodine. I have not solved all my issues with the keto diet, IF yet, but am ramping up the fasting episodes and cycling in and out of carnivore, keto and small amounts of carbohydrate after fasting like sweet potato in one meal only to try and get my body to wake up metabolically. Also concentrating on more exercise. I will say this however, I don’t think any harm can come to someone who follows diet doctors’ advice. I have experienced profound changes mentally, and it should be explored properly. Thanks again. Xx

As a cow/calf producer, cowboy ( female cowboy in this genderless occupation) I take DEEP offense about the ignorance of people as to how our animals are treated.. how they are fed , protected, cared for , and yes, LOVED for every day they are destined to BE on this earth .. our cows AND bulls , are our partners in this business of providing g the best and arguably the ONLY real food for humans . We have a bond AND a VOW to FEED, SHELTER , PROTECT, PROVIDE A STRESS FREE ENVIRONMENT , RESPECT AND CARE FOR AND ABOUT EACH ANIMAL AND THEIR OFFSPRING FOR AS LONG AS THEY ARE DESTINED TO BE HERE . . Whether that is 2 years or 2 , when that day comes they will be met with respect and a pain-free end just as your vet provides that for your beloved pet when you decide that it is time . However , our massive abbatoirs ,BY CANADIAN AND USA LAW, must adhere to strict regulations to provide an environment of basic " like " animal odors, sounds , and similar domestic structures to the ranch/ farm/ feedlot that they come from , and protected from any sights , sounds and smells that would be stressful ..UNLIKE THE LAST VISIT TO THE VET WITH ALL THE NOISES AND CHEMICAL SMELLS FROM THE CLINIC AND OTHER STRANGE ANIMALS . The other side of this environmental question , is that WITHOUT the inputs of the natural animal manures which are totally complete in nutrient values and organic matter ESSENTIAL to maintaining our soils' health and continuing on a regenerative path . Take the animal component away and we would be left with totally sterile soils and foods grown on them devoid of any nutritive value as we already have today in fruits and vegetables grown and harvested on sterile ground .. requiring the same supplementation that we must offer our animals if we feed them crops harvested on these soils .. people need to do some research before they decide which side of the fence they are on .

If there was a farm that had free-range cattle and poultry that were allowed to live their entire natural lives on pasture, and were butchered after they died of old age, would the Canadian or US regulators allow the meat to be sold? I suspect 1) it would be illegal, 2) it wouldn't be profitable for the farmer even if it was legal, and 3) vegans and vegetarians wouldn't buy the meat even if it was legally available and certifiably natural from birth to death. I think it would/should remove all ethical resistance, but in the ends wouldn't matter anyway.
@albertarancher7780

@@christopherstewart9874 LOL.. You're probably right Christopher!! However,, we will continue to look after our animals as we always have and help to provide those who want the best possible food and health for themselves and their kids. Those who don't want that will have to seek help from the medical professionals who haven't done their research and don't seem to be able to offer any real help. Those doctors and researchers who have done their due diligence, are increasing in numbers and examining good diet as the main source of health and it is not plant based.

I remember reading an interesting passage in the memoir 'All Creatures Great And Small' by James Herriot (or possibly it was one of his other books). He was a veterinarian in rural England before and during WWII. When he failed at his job of keeping an animal alive, the owners would summon the "knacker man" whose job it was to butcher the animal that had died of natural causes. Some of the animal could be recouped as a slight financial gain for the owners (skin if it was a cow, or hooves for glue if it was a horse, etc.) and then the knacker man was free to claim the rest of the animal. I suppose he would sell some of it for dog food, but mostly the knacker man took the meat home and fed it to his own family, as this particular knacker man had a lot of children. Herriot went to visit the knacker man's home and his report was that it didn't smell great (as there were untanned hides hung on the fence and so on) but that every member of the family was the absolute picture of rosy, glowing health and happiness. Once the war started and rationing set in, the knacker man's family were the only people getting a decent amount of meat. In fact, they ate very little else, since for them, meat was free and abundant. I wasn't yet a carnivore when I read that passage, but for some reason I never forgot it. Great books, by the way.

Many years ago I spent three days on some cooperative land where people I knew from college were living. I didn’t have the vocabulary to call their diet vegan, but it was. After three days I was famished, even though I’d been fed their diet, and the first thing I did after I left was to buy a big block of cheese and eat most of it. I was literally starving for protein. I could no more be a vegan than play pro basketball (at 5’3”.). It just doesn’t support my biology.

All doctors SHOULD get some training in nutrition. That way people wouldn't get sucked into stupid things like veganism and no-fat diets. Someone has to turn this stupid tide. An immunologist took me off almost all vegetable matter 25 years ago, I was horribly sick both mentally and physically. I'd been that way for about fourteen years with no help from any doctor until I met this chap. When he took me off all these foods, including artificial colours, flavours and preservatives my health improved within days. The change was fantastic. I have since taken myself off most of the other vegetables and I'm now fitter than I've ever been since I became sick. Only too glad I met this man.

It has been noted in sleep studies, that if a person is deprived of sleep for six hours a night for four days he is prediabetic. Has anyone investigated the connection between Alzheimer’s and lack of sleep.
@monnoo8221
@monnoo8221 Жыл бұрын
my observation: deprivation of sleep comes with dehydration. It is possible to overrule sleep, but that does not mean that all other processes and mechanisms follow along. Technically one may report yes i am wake, but metabolically he is sleeping, and during sleep you don't drink. Now, a major risk factor for Alzheimer are disorders in microvessels, caused by glucose spikes, electrolytes distortions (too little potassium), contracted vessels, disorders in the lymphatic compartment, most of which create the same conditions as being dehydrated. If a body is being chronically dehydrated, it would not signal thirst anymore, and if you would be in that state for years, yes, AD risk goes up. There was a nice article in Nature around 2006, summarizing the interaction between platelets and endothelium: if that lasted too long it triggered a micro-inflammatory response, and if that gets chronically, the waste removal by macrophages stops working... which triggers the accumulation of plaques, explaining one of the types of AD. ...and probably also the involvement of intra cellular tubuli in the neurons

It is uncomfortable that many are espousing the carnivore or vegan diet as an elixir . perhaps it is a benefit for some. l am certain balance is key for majority. our closest relatives monkeys, apes, eat vegetation as main diet. we are omnivores eating vegetables, fruit, legumes, nuts, some meats and getting the benefits for our bodies and microbiome who feed on the fibers from veg and fruit. indeed countries with the longest longevity eat way more veg, fruit, legumes.

Yes, exactly. Carnivore is great for most people, but when it doesn't work, I think it's because the person hasn't healed their gut. That's why people find that the ONLY thing they don't react to is beef. The human digestive tract should be much more flexible than that. I'm trying out a sort of combination carnivore/GAPS diet now, because as much as I love beef, I do want to have robust enough gut health that I can eventually reintroduce plenty of other things.

Yeah I find it strane how she and colleague, Saladino, both blow up the unsupported dietary dogmas but still by into the biggest assumption possibly ever, Darwinism.

100 percent agree. There is no need to bring the theory of evolution into everything.

8:00 ... Tucker Carlson just discussed a young black girl at Smith who lost her mind because someone asked her why she was in a building when rules said she wasn't allowed. Has anyone studied the relationship between neuroticism and vegetarianism? In my experience, vegans are often over emotional.

Tucker Carlson is a horrible source for information. On any subject. He admitted in court that he wasn't a journalist, that he was "entertainment" and no one should take him seriously. Look it up.

@@elizabethwhite1068 Yes... but as you can see, I wasn't relying on him exclusively for information, but rather as a recent reference for a non-controversial fact (lots of news sources reported on this case).
