Is puppy separation anxiety an issue for your pup? Dog separation anxiety is not easy. Here’s my story about my Goldendoodle Sophie - what happened, what I learned, what I tried, the SOLUTIONS to separation anxiety and some bonus tips.
Because doodle dogs of all kinds (whose owners I've spoken to over the years) have a tendency towards anxiousness, this info is beneficial for all types of doods including labradoodles, bernadoodles, aussiedoodles, cockapoos, spoodles, etc.
And actually, dogs of all breeds.
I hope my story will give you some ideas about how to approach this stressful issue (stressful for your dog as well as you) to come to a calm resolution. Yes, it's also inspired by Cesar Milan, who is a big advocate of promoting calm energy around dogs, and 'snapping their brains' out of unwanted behaviours.
It's packed with solutions and resources you could turn to.
If I could resolve dog separation anxiety with Sophie, I have faith you can do it too!
The items and resources I mentioned in this video include:

Hi Joanna! Thank you for covering such an important topic. Definitely great tips. Whatever we can do to get them out of that so they don’t suffer and neither do we. It’s heartbreaking to see them like that.

Thanks Jalysvette 💛 :) My heart goes out to others whose furbabies go through this. It felt so insurmountable at the time, but was a big triumph to have gotten through. Thank you for watching x

Thanks for covering this topic ! Would you consider making a video about picking a goldendoodle? Considering coat, Ive heard goldendoodles shed their puppy coat & get lighter in color and their coat changes in pattern as they get older.. could be a good tip with new pup owners looking for a goldendoodle

Very helpful tips. I love the idea of sending the snuggle puppy to the breeders and I did not know about the piano music.

Amazing video Joanna, you are a natural at explaining things in the most basic and thorough way! Are you a teacher of some kind in real life? :) I give geoscience courses and am always on the look out for simpler and more intuitive ways of explaining complex subjects. Anyway, the barking collar is a great solution! I have a 4.5 month old goldendoodle and always so scared to leave him alone. So far he seems fine when left alone but the potential barking fits are always in the back of my mind. Cesar Millan is a great advocate of "snapping the brain out of it" which is what the barking collar does. He always refers to "mental states" whether it's scared, playful, aggressive, anxious or "calm-submissive". In his book "how to raise a perfect dog" he explained how one of his puppies had separation anxiety and he would "spy" on the puppy, hiding behind a wall/bush and as soon as he puppy started crying he would make one of his shushing corrections from far away to snap him out of it. He said it took some repetitions but that he managed to have a calm puppy in one morning. Keep up the good work, always love your very informative, well structured videos!

Wow that's very kind, thank you 💞! Yes, I had Cesar Milan's technique of 'snapping the brain out of it' in mind regarding the vibration barking collar. Another way of doing it instead of saying "tsssst" like he does. I hope all's going very well with your puppy - so glad he's ok with being left alone 😇 All the best x

Thank you so much for your video. We have been struggling with separation anxiety for a couple years now and have tried many things so I am excited to try this. One question I have however.... you talked about starting to leave for short periods of times such as 30 seconds and then increasing the time when I can. My question to you is did you give the CBD oil every time you practiced leaving him even in the beginning when it was just for 30 seconds or even minutes or did you just give it when you left for longer periods of time? Also are you able to give me a better idea on how often you would practice leaving and with each practice (even in the beginning when leaving for just 1 minute) did you do all the steps you mentioned or again did you do that only when leaving for longer periods of time? Thank you so much for your help and any advice or comments you have time for are greatly appreciated.

Hi April, thanks for your message. I initially did the 30-second leave exercise before I got hold of the CBD. I did it almost daily. She got into a panic by just me going out the front door without her. But it worked much better once I gave her the CBD and did the same exercise. Another thing I did when she was in another room is to sneak out of the house through the side door (I drew the curtains on the front sliding door so she couldn't see me). I literally tippy-toed so she wouldn't hear me go. At that point she wasn't even aware of me being gone, so didn't go into a meltdown. When I returned I was super calm and nonchalant and didn't make any fuss about being back. This also helped her brain realise she had been on her own and was OK. It all built on itself over time (the calm response to me leaving) until I could eliminate the CBD altogether. Also, if one CBD oil doesn't work for your dog, don't give up - perhaps try a different brand that is highly recommended by others. To this day, I never make a fuss about leaving - I just go. I'm also intentionally calm around her when I return after a prolonged period. These days, she just sleeps while we're gone and just happily greets us when we're back - no sign of the melodrama of the early days. All the best x

Milo is three years old. I have to crate him upstairs In my walk-in closet with the lights off in order to leave the house for hours and he just sleeps with the occasional chance of a 20% meltdown it’s worked for me but it’s not perfect because if I go anywhere else that 20% goes up to 40 but at least I can go to work now

Thank you for this great info. Did you leave Sophie in a closed crate while you were out of the house? If so, at what age were you able to trust her out of the crate when she was alone?
@MyGoldendoodleDiary
@MyGoldendoodleDiary Жыл бұрын
Hi Nina, thank you. No, I did not crate Sophie. Although I got her used to the crate while I was at home, it doubly freaked her out when I left the house AND left her in the crate. I didn't push it. Crating is a great solution for some, just not for us. All the best with your pup x

I was wondering if it is too late for my dog to learn to sleep on his own( separate room)? We had him for 2 months now and he always spelt in our bedroom. Same issue with barking otherwise…he is a mini golden doodle, 5 months old. Thank you for your video…wishing I found it sooner!

How did you space your CBD oil doses? I need a window of time in the afternoon on 3 days that i must leave her. Thanks for your helpful videos!
@MyGoldendoodleDiary
@MyGoldendoodleDiary 10 ай бұрын
Hi, whenever I was about to leave, I'd give her a dose an hour-to-half an hour before I left so that it would gradually go through her system and calm her by the time I left. Good luck with yours. Once they realise they are OK without you there, their brain is trained and they don't need the CBD continuously. Once that one bottle ran out, I never gave CBD again and she was fine. Also, I (still) leave food in a food dispenser toy for Sophie just before we leave to keep her occupied - so she has a positive association with us leaving. All the best x

Can I not kennel my 10 month old or is that too young? I wonder if the kennel makes his anxiety worse…
@MyGoldendoodleDiary
@MyGoldendoodleDiary 7 күн бұрын
You can try it for short periods to see how he reacts. If he is comfortable, and maybe accompanied by a favourite toy, then perhaps you can extend the periods he spends in the kennel/crate. Just observe his reaction. I tried it with Sophie over a short period of time and she simply hated it, so I didn't push. Go with what works x

My neighbors dog howls from the moment they go out the door, to the second they come back in the door. Howling non stop. I have tried to talk to them about it but they get offended and angry... is it fair that i have to sit and listen to to their dog when they go out but I want to stay home and read a book or look at youtube videos? I have tried to use headphones but i hear the dog through them. Its super annoying, but they think that I just have to get used to it. I think its very disrespectful. They dont feel like they need to take responsibility for their dog disturbing their neighbors..

Hi Hannah, that is a sad thing that they appear not to take any action and react that way. Their dog is clearly distressed, and there are things they could try to make it better for their dog and therefore better for their neighbours. Offended and angry? Hmmmm. If I were them, I'd be apologetic and let you what course of action I'm taking to remedy it (which is what I did with our neighbours when my dog had separation anxiety). Thank you for watching.
