Hey my friend. I was wondering if you had any experience/opinion on replacing the Sequoia outer tie rods with heim joints? I need to do mine one way or the other soon. Oh and thanks for the detailed tour of all the crap in the back of your truck lol

That’s funny you ask my project is on hold thanks to Christmas and blown spider gears .. but I have a bunch of stuff I was working on steering being one of them.. I’m not saying you should.. but you could cut the stock tie rod like I did and sleeve it with a piece of 1.25” dom 1” Id and ad a 3/4” heim use a set of 3/4 to 5/8 misalignment spacers and drill the spindle for a grade 8 5/8 bolt cut out a double shear bracket using 3/16 plate to weld on as extra insurance.. or you could buy a heim steering kit for a first gen tundra .. another idea might be to buy the rack adapter to go to a heim and build an entire new link using dom and heims on both sides..

I was thinking about how that shock mount bent up on you. I do RC trucks. And i did a similar conversion. And my problem i had was that the shocks would bottom out before the control arms hit the bump stops. I wonder if that is happening to yours. Its probably more difficult to see if that is the case on a big heavy truck.
@theclan4adventures
@theclan4adventures 2 жыл бұрын
@@nickmccain6598 the original shock mount is 3/16 thick.. the first set of mounts were 1/8 because that’s what I had laying around for free and with no power steering 35’s and super tight trails they were doomed lol don’t get me started on rc. I ran a hobby store for 5 years and have been doing rc stuff for 35 years

@@theclan4adventures thats funny about the RC stuff. I remember super hot batteries and my dad would just put them on the charger so we could go back out to RC. I still have the gold rc10 in my hoarding pile of RC :) with a broken a arm and missing other stuff

Sorry for the book but I feel a detailed reply is a must Thanks to Covid not when I first started this build. Maybe now I might find something at a high over price but I was looking for an extended travel oem location shock no one I called had a first gen shock in stock anywhere in the country that I could order. I didn’t have the time to wait 60 weeks nor did I have the time to run a custom shock, build mounts or get one meant for another application then re spring and valve it. No offense but I’m not a fan of bilstein I’ve tried using them in the past on different projects and they failed. As a matter of fact I have a friend with an fj that had 5100’s installed recently He was driving home and a c clip failed the one that retained the spring cup. He had to have it towed to a shop. I also didn’t know what the truck was capable of when I got it or how far I would want to take it. Leave it some what stock .. mid travel.. long travel .. 1 tons gear cases and 42’s .. I wasn’t sure. After all my testing I’d say a mid travel with good shocks bumps strapped 35’s or 37’s 488’s and a rear locker would probably be the best all round set up for what I do with the truck. If you watch the latest video where we did a shake down run on Vic’s pathy the jeep and pathfinder where on 35’s pathy has front locker and jeep had front and rear lockers I went up all the same stuff they did but I only had 2wd and no locker. Now I’m giving the truck to my son and will build it with him so we will see where it ends up build wise

Thanks for the walkthrough. Very helpful to see 1st gen. builds. I'm really interested in duplicating your fr/r camera setup. Could you drop a link to where you bought yours? And.... where in a harness did you connect to grab rear camera "auto" power? I've got a double DIN head unit with a nice sized display, and a backup/rear camera mounted on my rear plate - but haven't successfully found backup camera power under the dash.

You can buy complete systems with two wireless cameras for around 100 bucks witch would make install slightly easier.. I just saw you have a rear set up.. on mine I pulled the input from the rear hatch where the reverse lights are .. it was a pain to run the wires but it works flawlessly just make sure they are clear of the window operation

It’s painted with gloss black top coat for a boat that I had left over from another project.. looks ok at a distance but up close not so much.. I could have put another coat on it and then wet sanded it for a nice finish but I knew it would get scratched so why bother. Thanks for watching

Depends.. a bolt on long travel kit goes for about 3-4k without shocks Look for a long travel kit for a first gen tundra. 2000-2006. Sometimes you can find a used kit .. A good setup would be a set of heim joint upper control arms that replace the stock upper control arms and use a extended travel coil over (if you can find one in stock somewhere) with a decent bump stop. Wheeler or a hydro bump.

those ranchos though are complete shit. why not go with ARB/OME or Dobinson?
@theclan4adventures
@theclan4adventures 2 жыл бұрын
Lol yeah I wouldn’t say complete shit they are better than any 5100’s I’ve run in the past.. they are working fine for what I needed them for like I said a few times they were better than blown factory shocks and they had them in stock ready to ship at that time ..any real shocks were 60+ weeks out on back order. It’s apparently time I make a video explaining why the sequoia and why what was done to it was done a hint… all of it was done as mock up cheaply and for testing to see if I even liked it as a trail rig. If I were to actually build it ..say with the ifs in a long travel configuration I’d use real components and real shocks..
