Tennis is a game of match-ups. Alize Cornet has a 3-4 h2h vs Serena and in general always gave Serena problems but she is nowhere near as accomplished as Maria. Serena struggled a bit with players that played with a lot of variety and bit of an old school game, whereas Maria played the same brand of tennis as Serena, but wasn’t as good.

I think Maria mentioned that after she beat Serena at Wimbledon, she saw how badly affected Serena was. So I think every time Serena sees Maria, she wants revenge. And that probably affected Maria’s mindset and her game.

I’ll never forget turning the channel during that match because I couldn’t bare the beatdown…then I cam back to be put out if my misery and she was close to winning 😂

2009-17 had only clown fields. You just have to look at which mugs were #1 - Jankovic, Safina, Wozniacki, Azarenka, Kerber, Pliskova, Muguruza. Truly a kist from hell and an embarrassment for women‘s tennis. Would not have been remotely possible in the Golden Age (mid-70 to mid-90s).

Serena sustained a tendon injury in that match and struggled to get over the line after that. It was the same injury that forced her to pull out of the French Open, which was after the US Open that year.

Tbh I think Serena never really gained her full fitness till AO 21. And cause of the loses at grand slam after Olympia she wasn’t mentally strong enough, plus the pressure of reaching 24.. affected her the most. Serena could not have it all, she wanted to be a full time mother, and an athlete added to the pregnancy/ birth complications she experienced she never found that grand slam winning level again. And it’s a shame, cause if she had really worked on her fitness instead of rushing back to competition she could have won a few grand slams, but her body needed time and she rushed it. She’d needed to train harder and longer. But it hard when you’ve had a life threatening child birth and wanting to be a mother who never spends a day without her child beside her. I think if she could have worked on training and being disciplined more (away from Olympia) she would have won more grand slams. But it’s harder been a mother, than a father.

I said the same thing but like I said in the AO 2021 she really was almost there with fitness but you defiantly can see the difference. I was just saying man Serena was soooooooo good but remember now she's just operating on what 75-80 percent of her lungs
