Kerber at her best was world class. One of the few matches Serena lost after playing well.

You play well in tennis when your winner count is way more than your unforced errors, Serena’s unforced errors here were silly and too many, almost triple her winners, her serve wasn’t working and her ace count was unusually low; so I disagree, Serena played very poorly by her standards, largely due to pressure and partly due to how well Kerber played. An example of a match Serena played well and still lost was Wimbledon 2008, winner count way more than her unforced errors with lots of aces but she still lost to Venus

Nirvana respectfully disagree. Serena, herself, said that Kerberos played out of her mind. Look at the amount of unforced errors Kerberos played in three sets. They are unbelievably low. Serena said she felt she needed to play more aggressive, risk more errors, because Angie was chasing down everything. The match was gripping. It is one I was able to watch as it happened. I couldn’t believe how well Angie was playing. Serena really stepped it up in the last two sets but Angie just wouldn’t be defeated. It was unreal. I base the match on its terms. A counterpuncher vs aggressive baseliner are going to have more errors from the latter. Still, Serena is usually able to win these and was leading in the final set, if I recall. Angie simply didn’t miss and kept the ball in play no matter what. Serena hit unbelievable angles, spins, power, and serving was good. That day it just wasn’t enough.

Yep, I re-watched this final many times and Serena play well I thought. Kerber is not just a backboard. She is a aggresive counter puncher like djokovic and can unleash accurate lefty forehands down the line. Combined with her game, a bit unusual with just the slice serve gave Serena problems. Thus the errors. Kerber took this final..look at the 2 dropshots in the last set. Serena was outplayed

@@user-be5qg7mr1s Even Serena herself said that Angie was just too good on this final. She said she couldn’t even be mad because Angie made like 12 errors over three sets. She just found another level that day.

Serena couldn't cope with Kerber's phenomenal defence. This player is the best backboard on the women's tour. She gets every ball back & hits some amazing defensive winners.

I was up late watching this match live......totally didn't expect Kerber to win. Was gutted for Serena but at least she got her revenge a few months later at Wimbledon. A great match. Kerber's defense is insane.

That defense is the key of Kerber for players who hit the ball hard like Serena, Sharapova and Azarenka. Can U imagine where Kerber would have played that final against a player like Pavlyuchenkova or Kasatkina, where their game is much more varied and with slice, Kerber would lose against them. A player like Kerber gets a headache from playing against players like them. Kerber has taken two GS against Serena Williams, WB and AO. Bravo for her!🎾💯👍🏻

I watched this live and many times on replay. But still I get nervous watching it now. Kerber's defense was the key. German "wall".

Serena played incredible. She has to hit so many winners while blasting the ball at full power. Kerber really forces her to come up with something special on every shot. And when Serena would back off a little Kerber would step up her groundstrokes. I love this match!

Serena didn't play incredible. She hit 44 winners to 48 unforced errors and was 15/38 at the net. Absolutely awful stats for her.

@@roberthealy8042 No need to call me a moron for stating actual stats. Serena hit 48 UNFORCED errors, aka errors that Kerber did not force. She also had a terrible serving day, which had nothing to do with Kerber.

I am a hardcore Serena fan but I have to admit this final was phenomenal. Kerber deserved the title even Serena knew it, KERBER BEAT HER! What a way to win your 1st Slam.

This was a great champion's match and how Awesome to see Serena and Kerber at net Their respect for each other and Serena just being so gracious in defeat is probably one of the most wonderful moments at the Aussie Open Their smiles say it all

Kerber has the game to trouble Serena, she handles her pace really well and redirects it better than anyone else.

I forgot that the third set was so close and Serena serve let her down. One of my favorite things in tennis has been to see Serena after losing a grand slam final welcome a lady into the Grand Slam Club. I loved her welcoming Angelique into the Grand Slam club in 2016 and I especially loved her welcoming Maria into the Grand Slam Club in 2004.

What a match. Kerber's shot tolerance was unmatched and her footwork is so sooooo good here, never off balance. Not as graceful as Graf on her toes but reminds me a lot of Henin's footspeed and movement as well as Halep. Anticipated Serena's patterns so well. This was Serena at the height of her powers as well, so it's a fantastic win for Kerber.

This wasnt just Kerbers biggest moment of her career at that point, imo this was the "Playstyle era shift" in the WTA, the Big Babe playstyle that had been the "meta" for almost 2 decades that Sells started and the Williams sisters prefected, and players like Muguruza,Sharapova, Gorgi,Azarenka,Safina, Osaka,Ostapenko all incorporated as their playstyle was now at the mercy of hyper athletic, all arounders,players like Kerber,Halep, Andrescu,Swiatek,Barty can defend these flat baseline big hitters better than other defenders/pushers/counter punchers and yet they also made their own offensive shots with heavy spin angles or laser accuracy with Solid pace which is harder to defend than just bludgeoning the ball flat at the for corners of the baseline constantly, also the more varied spins of slice,flat, topspin make flat baseliners error forcefully so the very ego boosting "Match is in my hands alone" fallacy was shattered. This match would be the equivalent of Sampras vs Djokovic (playstyle wise)
