Dementieva said after her career that she loved playing Serena cuz she could read her serve but hated playing Venus cuz she couldn't read her game. It's funny how a player's game can match with another one.. Serena and Elena had so many classic tough matches although Serena won most of them 😁

Interesting that I did not see any overheads in this highlight. Lots of fierce ground stroke putaways by Serena especially and several good volleys by Elena. Awesome to see how both could run down impossible shots and often make winners off them!

This was a great match. We do not see that level or intensity today in WTA tournaments, only sometimes at grand slams.

I love her aggressive game in 2004. It got her to two grand slams finals. She is tall but fast with great groundstrokes. Should have achieved more but I love her anyway.

I have never ever seen this match, and I'm so glad I finally did!! This is some agressive stuff from Elena again Serena! You want to yell "finally!" I always thought she was too intimidated against Serena, Venus or Maria. I've been a fan of Elena since 2000, and was very relieved when she finally started playing better from 2003. The 2001/2 I felt she was just far from her potential, and was playing too safe. Thanks for your highlights! I cannot wait for more clips from you :)

Here’s what people don’t talk about: the first time Dementieva beat Serena was in 2007. This was around the time that Sharapova said she started using meldonium-the drug that got Russian athletes banned from Olympics. Russia had a number of notable players in the top 20 during this time -including the first Russian slam winner and the first all Russian slam final. For those who say even if they did use meldonium it was legal doping. That’s incorrect. When an athlete uses a drug for performance enhancement there are only a few ways the drug enhances performance. WADA breaks down these different ways into classes. For example if a drug is found to increase stamina, all drugs used to increase stamina would be placed in the same class. In 2016 WADA banned meldonium while they were still testing to see what class of drug it is. They did this even though they were still testing the drug because it was showing up in so many athletes’ sample, they had no choice. When Sharapova tested positive, WADA was still testing the drug. Some time after Sharapova was banned, they found the drug the drug was a metabolic modular. Metabolic modulators have been banned since 2003. Since Sharapova admitted to using a banned substance since 2006, she should’ve been asked to pay back prize money and stripped titles she won during that time. We have ample evidence to suggest that the WTA Russian surge in the early 2000s that Dementieva was a part of was not clean.

Elena can move her feet pretty quickly which is rare among tall players. If Elena debuts in the 00s, she would have easily win a few Grand Slams. Unfortunately for her, the era she played in was the most competitive era in womens tennis history. Serena, Venus, Henin, Sharapova, Hingis, Davenport, Mauresmo. Too many great players.

serena's footwork really wasn't as good after her knee injury in 2003, she got it back though

I doubt Serena could have beaten Margaret in the Australian open in the 60s! It was played in December and in Brisbane and Sydney a few times where the temperature gets to 100 plus ! And no heat rules! No night matches! No injury time outs! No tie breakers! That's why Margaret is the greatest!!
