I love both Serena and Nastya, but this match was really not that good, unfortunately. A few great points but ultimately disappointing to see how Myskina completely disappeared from 64 *30 up.

The American commentators used to be so effin harsh about Serena. So cringe to listen to nowadays...

@@chriscze6153 So harsh. Now I feel like they've gone the other way with her in that they are so gushing and complimentary of her because of all she's since accomplished. But back in the day, you'd think Serena was a terrible player the way they used to talk about her. Her 2004 season btw was not even bad at all by any top player's standards that year either but they made it seem like it was a total disaster lol.

@@jmiller05 The American commentators in general have always been horrible, I try to cut them out of my videos as often as possible, but the next video with Serena/Elena has British commentary. Not a single derogatory remark about Serena or her year in the entire match. They just focus on the quality of the match itself - who'da thunk it....

@@chriscze6153 Yep. It reminded me of when Venus lost to Sprem at Wimbledon that year and MJF was basically writing her eulogy after the match as if her career was over. Both Venus and Serena had a disappointing year in 2004 by their high standards but they still finished in the top 10 and had 4 titles and a slam final between them. Hardly the worst set of results ever.

Back then, when somebody win a grand slam. Chances of them having a long consistent career was very high, unlike today. So I was quite surprised that Myskina sort of disappeared after a strong 2004 season

She was a great player but injuries and personal problems derailed her short but fruitful career.

I think from the mid 2000s it became more important to have a good first and second serve to stay competitive as the game became more physical. It allowed the odd free point. You couldn’t just roll your serve in like Myskina does and have twenty shot rallies and expect to go deep in tournaments over a full year while avoiding injuries. We see how Hingis struggled on her comeback, Venus declined on slower surfaces with her weak second serve, Dementieva’s results improved as she improved her serve, Davenport stayed competitive. Kim and Justine had decent serves - certainly not weaknesses in the way it is for Myskina. Safina only had a couple of good years as she had a shaky serve. And Maria also declined for a bit after shoulder surgery. Radwanska struggled to reach major finals despite her enormous talent because of that soft second serve. Also, Myskina was a counterpuncher at the end of the day. Since her Roland Garros win only two majors have been won by such a player - Australia 2018 by Wozniacki and Wimbledon 2023 by Vondrousova

@@FlabbyTitmuss yes Halep is similar to Myskina, maybe with a bit more power and explosive movement. Also Vondrousova proved at Wimbledon you can still win with steady no frills tennis.

Myskina was like a wall. Every time I see an old video of her matches she frustrates top players. She had skills, easy power, great powerful angled shots, good defense. Serena could not just rally balls to her and had to redline a bit with powerful shots. Seems like Myskina should have won more slams, but the competition was tough in that era

Now this is what I call a collapse. Myskina has lost some important matches like this one (against Justine at Olypmic Games 2004 is most famous). Nice to see some matches when Serena is not at her best, but she's trying 100% to win. Love that fight spirit from her.

I really loved the entire 04 YEC (except the last 20-ish minutes of it). Serena came into this tournament physically compromised and out of form, she had to play smart and solve puzzles, she played with more variety than usual and went for angles instead of pace. She even strategically tanked the last set again Davenport which rarely happens. And ofc, that legendary outfit. On the other hand, this tournament was a huge missed opportunity for Myskina, should have made the final. BTW Pam was in full hater mode this match.

What was so ironic about Serena in 2004 is that her outfits were stunning but her general play was so messy and lacking in confidence. I really think she came back probably a bit too soon in Miami and she was still playing catch up with her fitness and match play all year. She made it to the Wimbledon final through sheer guts but her level was starkly different from 2002/03.
