Wash (Alan Tudyk) successfully saves Serenity, but at the cost of his own life.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A band of renegades on the run in outer space get in more hot water than they anticipated in this sci-fi action-adventure adapted from the television series Firefly. In the 26th century, the galaxy has been colonized by a military force known as the Alliance, but its leadership has not gone unquestioned. The Alliance was once challenged by a league of rebels known as the Independents, but the Alliance emerged victorious after a brutal civil war, with the surviving Independents scattering around the galaxy. Also wandering the edges of the galaxy are the Reavers, who have won few allies due to their violent behavior and habit of ripping apart their enemies and eating them before they're dead. Capt. Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds (Nathan Fillion), who fought as an Independent in the galactic war, is the head of Serenity, a rogue frieghter ship whose crew includes Mal's first mate, Zoe (Gina Torres), who fought alongside him in the war, her husband, hotshot pilot Wash (Alan Tudyk), sunny but dependable mechanic Kaylee (Jewel Staite), and hard-nosed gunman Jayne (Adam Baldwin). The crew of Serenity wander the galaxy, taking on whatever work they can get, from criminal activities like smuggling and stealing to legitimately offering transport to travelers. Passengers aboard Serenity include professional "companion" Inara (Morena Baccarin) and holy man Shepherd Book (Ron Glass), but the real trouble aboard the ship comes with the arrival of Simon (Sean Maher) and his teenage sister, River Tam (Summer Glau). In time, the crew discovers that River has remarkable psychic powers and was being held captive by Alliance forces until Simon came to her rescue. Now the Alliance is hot on the heels of Serenity and its passengers, with The Operative (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a sinister Alliance tracker, leading the chase. Serenity was written and directed by Joss Whedon (in his directorial debut), creator of Firefly, which only lasted 11 weeks on the air but gained a powerful cult following who rallied to get the show released on DVD after its cancellation, leading to impressive home-video sales and and an eventual motion picture deal. A couple of months prior to Serenity's theatrical release, reruns of Firefly were picked up by the Sci-Fi channel, adding even more fans to its cult following.

This scene says a lot about Jayne too. For all his faults, when Mal tells him to secure everyone else, he does, taking the time to verify they were secure before himself. He’s a mercenary jerk, but not irredeemable.

That's what made Firefly great. Everyone was a character, not a caricature. The scene where he betrayed Mal and thought that Mal was going to flush him out the airlock, he asked him to lie to the crew about how he died because he didn't want the shame of them knowing he betrayed them. That's not how a hack writer would ever write a villainous mercenary.

A moment in the movie that still wrecks me is when the crew gets the news that Wash ain't coming and Inara and Kaylee immediately look to Zoey with horror and empathy on their faces and Zoey is just loading her gun with a dead face. You could see in that moment what Wash brought to her life and what could never be replaced. That moment just still cracks me open.

After watching the movie, I distinctly remembered the scene where they learn Wash is missing. I remember a long closeup of Zoe dispassionately (at least on the outside) loading her gun. I was surprised when I watched it a second time that the camera only showed her loading the gun for 1 second. The rest of the time you could only hear the loading process.

I still think they could make a new series in the universe with a different set of characters. It's the setting as a space-western and excellent writing that makes Firefly what it is, with some good casting they could come up with something new and just as good.

I always thought this was an incredible depiction of the true ferocity of the Reavers. They just got led into a battle against a technically superior force and this ship, rather than pulling up, turning tail, or aiding it's fellow ships, just continues its dogged pursuit of Serenity. The Reaver fleet that chased Serenity was doomed the moment they came through the cloud. But that didn't matter. Nothing mattered but their prey.

I never noticed Mal calming in the background just saying “Zoe...” when she is trying to get Wash to move. Both acknowledging her loss (and his) as Wash’s friends and crew, but also as a Sergeant in a war who has seen friends die immediately and knows they must go. NOW. and will have to deal with it emotionally later. :’(

Wish i could find it, but Alan Tudyk had a good story about this line, where he was at some convention or another doing meet and greets and signings and a young woman walked up to him with his picture and asked him to sign it. So he did and he wrote "Im a leaf on the wind, watch how i soar" and handed it back to her. She looked down at the photo, read it, and started crying her eyes out saying "how could you write this?!?". Not sure if he stopped writing that for fans or not lol.

The answer is in writing in general. You see, all the characters are pretty much leads, which has viewers thinking that every single one of them is going to survive it. But, by one of them being killed, it raises the stakes and makes the audience realize, "Oh shit, the rules no longer apply. Anyone can die from this point on!" In fact, Whedon himself stated that was the intent behind Wash's death, as a mean of cranking up the suspense.

When I finished the series and knew that there would never be any more TV Firefly, I was sort of happy to just assume that Serenity continued flying around the Verse with her crew - barely getting out of scrapes alive but always pulling through. This movie swallows that feeling of narrative "serenity" - gargles it a bit - and then spits it out in a big ball of yuck with a widow, two dead bodies, a missing engine pod and just a whole bunch of misery. I kind of wish it had never been made, even if the movie itself is pretty good. I can never now write new firefly in my head - I can only consider the aftermath.

It's stupid logic.I like dramatic change of the movie. If you didn't know Wheedon had wanted Firefly to be a drama but producers hadn't allowed it but he did it after all. And I think it's right choice.And I've seen the same story development in another sci-fi story. VN/anime Steins:Gate from comedy to drama with losing of your favorites because it's great. Not everything has happy ending.Or it has but with bitterness

Different people look for different things in stories, and Firefly had plenty of drama potential in it without two devastating deaths hanging over it. Plus, drama and death is one thing, but when you don't get to see the catharsis and recovery after it, it just feels empty. If they had killed off a major character - if, say, Wash's death had happened in one of the seasons instead of right at the end - I would have liked seeing how that loss changed the crew dynamics, seeing their grief explored, etc. When that exploration is absent, it is very hard not to see the death as cheap. That's why in the fanfiction community for Firefly, there's a good deal of post-series fanfic that ignores the movie, just as much as there's fanfic exploring the fallout of the movie. The post-movie Firefly verse is a much more bitter place than the (comparatively) feelgood found family dynamics of the show. Sometimes you want one, and sometimes you want the other.

I remember seeing this in the cinema in total shock, the totally mental battle with the Reavers in space, then this crash which seemingly destroys the Serenity THEN... I was not expecting everyone in the theatre to gasp as Wash died.

This whole scene is haunting, from start to finish. It reminds you just how brutal and awful the reaver’s methods of attack are and how much Serenity was outgunned by the reaver fleet. Killing a good person like Wash who essentially put himself in harm’s way for the crew to survive. Warfare is hell, no matter where you are in. But it also begs the question: have the reavers done these types of things to other people like Wash too? What about the other people that the crew encountered? It also feels so worse for poor Zoe. Watching the love of your life die right in front of you by the means of a harpoon gun is a pretty traumatizing and horrible way to witness someone’s death.

The impaling was a wonderful jump scare. I had no idea, then tragedy. They really highlighted the militant past of Mal and Zoe(..). As they quickly regroup and save the others. Wash was prolly my first ever 'main character dies' moment and it shook me. I miss Wash, and may I someday go out the same way performing my greatest feat ever just to artfully gloat before immediate death.

What sets this apart is that the death wasn't telegraphed in the slightest. A lot of filmmakers would have shown the Reaver ship taking aim at the cockpit, the look exchanged between target and gunner as Walsh realised he was about to die, and tried to build tension. That it interrupted what we all assumed was going to be a throwaway smug line really made an impact (no pun intended). It's similar in execution to the line "There is a mome…💥" in Interstellar.

The shots and sound design here are incredible. The feeling of chaos and disorientation when they start to tailspin is so visceral, you feel like you're there in the ship with them.

I will never forget seeing this in the theater.... not knowing anything about it going into the movie.... and when this scene played out and Wash dies.... I literally bolted up in my seat and screamed "NOOOOOO!!!!" at the top of my lungs, oblivious to the fact that I was in a public theater. I was expecting that I would be reprimanded for my action --- but after the movie, many (as in not one or two, but almost 10-15!!!) people came up to me and said "Thank you for expressing what I could not". I don't get emotionally vetted in what I watch, but seeing Wash die.... that hurt.

This was the moment that made the movie perfect. Suddenly, all our emotional investment used against us and we all the felt the horror of watching, a beloved friend die after accomplishing the incredible. Afterwards, we had no idea if the rest would survive, the edge of our seats were where we found ourselves. Jos Wheadon is an amazingly brutal writer.

This movie broke me. my parents showed me Firefly when i was twelve and then showed me the movie after a spent like a week getting to know and love the characters (throughout the show my favorite characters were Wash and Sheperd. specifically Wash because at the time i loved comedy characters and thought they never died. but going from the funny episodes to death and violence cause me so much Whiplash that i felt sick after watching it. EDIT: also my other favorite character was Serenity itself because i loved starships and the designs of them so the ship itself breaking hurt me emotionally

I just have to say, that death always felt like bullshit to me. He survives the crash but then BAM impaled outa nowhere. Like it would honestly have been better for him to be killed in the crash and say his line while dying rather than sudden and random death imediately after surviving something that could have been fatal far more easily.

I still remember the audible gasp from the audience when Wash was killed when I saw this in theaters. It's been rare that I've seen that kind of reaction from an audience. It might make fans mad, but this really did work because when Zoe, Jayne, Kaylee, and Simon all get hit during the final battle, you worry about them because Wash died. You know this might be the end for them.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO It's like they knew Book's death didn't really bother me (much as I liked him) so they pegged Wash too. But I'm not among those who wish it never happened, it really had me thinking for a second once Simon was shot that maybe they were all gonna die. Very cool

I know many people hate the idea of seeing Serenity crash landing, but can we give it up to the ILM Model Shop for not just making a large scale model of Serenity, but making the crash landing feel real? Joss could have said, "We can do it CG." But, nope, he wanted us to feel the weight and impact as she crashed. And the ILM Model Shop didn't disappoint.

Always respected how Joss was never scared to kill off characters. It makes every dangerous situation so much more compelling. Unlike almost all of these tv shows and movies who either never kill anyone or kill them and “bring them back”.
