Amazing how Mario had lost so much speed, but was still able to play his game. He just saw the ice better than just about every player in history! His hands were out of this world. Plus his size made him very hard to body

@@mrwaltermathews they may not have the depth Canada has but they're a much smaller country and that fact has never prevented them from always playing with the heart of lions. And look at the talent they produced: Kurri, Selanne, Koivu just to name a few. So many more.

"Hockey is the best sport" fact #2: Even though class act Steve Yzerman's withdrawal of himself from Canada's roster meant that #19 was opened up for class act Joe Sakic to wear, Sakic still refused to take it, sticking with #91 to keep #19 unused in honor of Yzerman.

I watched the whole tournament for Canada and I was happy to see Joe Thornton to play this time after not getting a chance for 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City. I never thought Finland would get this far for the Championship game vs Canada, they got Selanne, Koivu, Ruutu, Numminen and red hot Kiprusoff. The Championship game was just a day before my 18th birthday and boom on my birthday my dad was hospitalized due to breathing problems and the NHL officially went to a lockout. Still seeing Canada win undefeated was the early birthday gift.

"Hockey is the best sport" fact #1: Steve Yzerman withdrew himself from Canada's roster from this tournament because he felt that, due to injuries, he wouldn't be able to play at the level needed and would be taking a roster spot that should go to a player better able to contribute. The player that was then added in his place? Vincent Lecavalier (hard to believe he wasn't already on the roster, actually, but true).
@Lexngton
@Lexngton 2 жыл бұрын
And Lecavalier went on to win MVP awards for the tournament, astonishing
@errbt
@errbt 2 жыл бұрын
@@Lexngton That's my point. Had Yzerman not done the honorable thing and removed himself, and instead had stayed on the roster, reaching vainly for one last chance at glory, the team wouldn't have had Lecavalier, nor likely won the gold medal .

Things I recall about this tourney... prior to watching this vid... Brad Richards played well... Lecalvalier scored a big goal, the big goal,in the semis, wasn't it? ...Maltby, Draper & Thornton, if I recall correctly, were a very good line... JayBo (who played on our World Jr Team at 16, if memory serves) looked very good in a TC uniform, as per usual...Scott Neidermayer was Scott Neidermayer...Jovocop looked like he didn't belong... Brodeur got hurt & missed a game... BUT they don't beat the Czechs in semis, without Luongo.. .Also, on the other side of the pond, Czechs destroyed Swedes, and Swedish fans, still hurt from their meltdown , 2 years earlier, in Salt Lake City, really vilified their 'over-paid' stars, their words not mine... Brutal, brutal tourney for Tres Kronors...

A good team, yes. Definitely NOT "One of the best team ever." 1972 Team Canada was better. The 1987 Canada Cup Team was way better. The 2002 Team Canada Olympic Team was 10x better. This squad was a good group of players, but that's it. Certainly not worth of being called a "Dream Team."

@@cheese5565469 - You may have watched then series many years after it happened but the part you fail to see, and it's because you aren't from that time, is that '72 Team Canada played an 8 game series against The Red Army team that nobody outside of Russia had ever laid eyes on. We know now that Russian hockey is a big bad hockey playing animal. In '72, we didn't know that. That Team Canada went into those games blind against a Russian team, that played as a team, for years and years and years! The only thing comparable to that today would be if aliens from space showed up and had a hockey team and wanted to have a series. Those Canadian boys did a top notch job against a Russian team of all-stars. It wasn't just the team that I admire. It was the situation.
