The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

A great performance by Sergio, as always! I had never heard of this song before but Wiki states 'O surdato 'nnammurato" is used as the anthem of S.S.C. Napoli, which is a European football club. Written by Aniello Califano and Enrico Cannio in 1915, the song describes the sadness of a soldier who is fighting at the front during World War I, and who pines for his beloved.

@@edufau815 Sergio is near the top of the list to be certain. Off the top of my head, some other singers with more appearances were Teresa Brewer (31), Connie Francis (26) and Roberta Peters (41). Great to hear from you by the way!

Promoting recordings for sale was different (enough) then. They didn't have super quick internet promotional access, KZfaq and streaming service options, etc.--much was centered around physical records and brink-and-mortar store sales. So, promotion of the recorded version, to encourage paid sales, and in an especially incredible era of entertainment competition (there are reasons quite a few of us say the '60s was the world's greatest pop music success decade so far...) made lip syncing a clear necessity. That was especially true on as popular a show as Sullivan. It's part of the historical record that record stores saw significant immediate-week sales increases for recordings of artists appearing that Sunday who performed current recorded releases of theirs, whether lip synced or live.
