The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

I had the great privilege of seeing Franchi in NY shortly before his death from cancer. The man was a monument to vocal prowess. You couldn't tell a thing was wrong with him. However, he knew as he commented on the comedown of performing at that once-esteemed venue (now crumbling). Two giants biting the dust simultaneously. Between him and Mario Lanza, in my opinion, there have been very few who could fill the shoes of those in his category.

Sergio Franchi was, without doubt, one of the greatest tenors, period(!). of the 20th century. His versatility and vocal command were unmatched. Through a very strange 'back' story, in late 1968, I was his weekend guest, as he was 'appearing', during the Holiday season in Puerto Rico, at an exclusive hotel. I was twenty one at the time, and it was a thrilling experience to meet and interact with this wonderful man and to hear, close-up, this incredible voice.

What a performance it was...Mr Franchi was such a gentleman to speak with. Very cordial and polite...We spoke about the beauty of Venice Italy. They loved him in New York over 50,000 in attendance that day..Me Franchi was the greatest Tenor yet on this earth..I wish you could have met him as I did that day.

After careful evaluation of all the great tenors ever recorded, It has to be Mr Franchi as the greatest of them all. He reaches notes others do not quite make and Sergio makes them powerfully and masterfully like none other. That is not meant as a discount to anyone. I actually met him at Shay Stadium in Spring in New York at the opening day of baseball in 1968 when our First Army New York Band backed him doing the National Anthem. He sang the Star Spangle Banner as masterfully as we have ever heard it. Too bad that performance was not recorded. Sergio was such a pleasant person to speak with. He left a wonderful lasting impression as I spoke with him on my travels to Italy. It seemed as though everyone loved the man in New York City as a result of his great Broadway performances.and those from the Ed Sullivan Show Mr Franchi's smile and personality did the rest! ....God The Man was Amazing. .Note: the Lords Prayer has Never been performed so magnificently as when Mr Franchi sang it on Ed Sullivan show. But to hear the climax and that great high note that the other tenors could never reach with such power and brilliance, you must purchase the DVD which I did and was most happy for having done so. . .

I am so happy to hear others feel the same way as I do! Though Luciano Pavarotti and Beniamino Gigli are also the best Italian tenors, I would say Sergio Franchi was the best all-around entertainer...he sang not only in Italian, but English and French as well! And not only bel canto and Neapolitan songs, but pop songs as well, cracking jokes and even tap dancing at his shows. I'm sure you know all this Lynn, but it bears repeating for others! Grazie mille per il tuo commento bellissimo.

John Sweeney Probably because he had to fight his father for approval to sing. His family moved to South Africa and he joined them when he finished his military training at age 21. Just as his incredible voice attracted attention in S.A. (where he starred in operettas and Opera), he would certainly have attracted attention in Italy, and have had the ten years he lost to develop into an Italian Opera personality. As it was, when he returned to Italy it was with a family and two children and he had to make money however he could. He was discovered in London by RCA, and signed sight unseen to seven year Red Seal contract.
@mickey1849
@mickey1849 4 жыл бұрын
In addition, he doesn't really have an operatic voice. He's lacking proper pharyngeal expansion most importantly. His squillo needs work. High notes probably too. He's got more like a big voice for singing musicals. At some point in his past he may have been able to train his voice into that of an opera singer. But by the time we're hearing this here that was already long in the past. This MAY have been his voice all along, even when he started doing opera in S.A. in 1953. In a 1981 interview he said he must have "been a dreamer" to think he could be an opera singer. So maybe that was a frank assessment on his abilities with the benefit of hindsight. Probably Ms. Leckie's analysis (above) is hitting the mark for the most part, in indirect ways. Still, he's a pleasure to listen to and watch--an exuberant personality. In addition, people were not mistaken in their assessment that his voice was special in some way. Even Beniamino Gigli encouraged him in the late 1950's to go to Italy and try his luck there. Gigli wasn't mistaken either, because that's where Franchi first got noticed. He was also a good son and relative. After he became a U.S. citizen in 1973 he used his position and wealth to get all his close family and relatives over to the U.S. from South Africa, which was by this time falling into a worse and worse shambles. By the early 1980's they had all joined him at his estate in Connecticut. Bottom line, as it is, he really didn't have an operatic voice. If he would've started training early enough and continued, things might've been different. Then again, by his own admission looking back in hindsight, maybe not. Perhaps more importantly, he finally found his audience--or they found him. :)

@mickey1849
@mickey1849 4 жыл бұрын
In the 60's they tried to talk him into doing the biopic movie on Lanza, like Lanza did on Caruso in 1952. He politely turned them down, a FEW times. Sergio rightly figured the risks (and COSTS) of failure were too great--and the chances of success too small--to take a shot at it. Actually, he doesn't have a voice near as good as Lanza's--not for opera anyway. His is not an opera voice. That being said, he's a great crossover singer with a big voice and a lot of passion. His looks don't hurt either. It was a pleasure watching and hearing him here!
@KajiVocals
@KajiVocals 3 жыл бұрын
@@mickey1849 Sergio had a much bigger and classical voice than Lanza though. Lanza was a high lyric tenor voice that came more from imitation than training (although still highly trained). Franchi’s voice was more refined than some of top operatic singers. He is quite similar in terms of vocal size to Del Monaco and Nelepp. Sergio was a real dramatic tenor.
