Adnan once issued a challenge to Sarah. He told her to test the state's timeline of the murder by driving from Woodlawn High School to Best Buy in 21 minutes. It can't be done, he said. So Sarah and Dana take up the challenge, and raise him one: They try to recreate the entire route that Jay said he and Adnan took on January 13th, 1999.

Also, isn’t it weird how Jay consistently tells parts about dealing with the body of Hae Lee (with Adnan) but can’t consistently tell the parts about how Adnan called him and all that shit... if you ask me, he remembers all the details perfectly because HE commited the crime... he’s not lying about that. He didn’t fabricate it therefore he won’t have a hard time retelling it to someone.

Al Heathers im my opinion , I think Jay was worried about the implications of what he confessed. Initially his story leaned towards distancing himself as much as possible but as time progressed and the more he co-operated with the Autho’s and he received reassurance that his co-operation would be rewarded he began revealing more info. Most likely he left out some parts(Along the lines of being on standby while the murder happened, deciding where she should be buried, getting paid.. etc) and did not need to divulge more info because Adnan denied everything anyway. Maybe he did divulge his full involvement but the Autho’s left some info off the record as a favor so he wont get jail time for more serious charges.

@ॐNeo_White _Rabbitॐ ADNAN IS GUILTY!HOW MUCH PROOF DO YOU GUYS NEED? 1.It was a crime of passion, since there was no sexual assault on a beautiful young girl.So something personal, after 20 years of public scrutiny and media investigation, you'd think SOME other angle or motive would come out .But NONE. It leaves either don or adnan, and don couldnt have cuz jay knew so much including where the car is, so he wasnt bluffing. Inconsistencies in his story can be there, he's a human being with a personal life, he was tired of talking to the cops for hours and started just saying yes to their questions wthout thinking much.Secondly he admitted lying about seeing body in best buy, he actually saw it near his grandma house but back then he couldnt tell the police cuz he didnt want his grandma and family involved. 2.LOOK at adnan's reaction talking about Jay at 15th or 16th minute mark,just like in all other audio tapes, he barely sounds as angry or full of hate / resentment towards jay as ANYONE innocent would have if his very close loved one was murdered by Jay( if adnan is innocent has to jay the murderer cuz of things he knew) and leaving him spending his life in prison cuz of lies. Just listen to adnan talk, " dont wanna make accusation againts jay without proof", i was like WHAT? DUDE he killed her no innocent person would talk like that. He is just sticking to innocent because he knows his family specially mother would lose her mind with shock if he admits guilt.

Ur a moron, if u make something up its easy to be consistent, Adnan is guilty af and morons like u haven't paid attention. "evidence against Adnan: the cell phone pings in Leakin Park, lying to get into Hae's car, lying about trying to get into Hae's car, his paranoid jealousy about Don, his selective amnesia, his fingerprints (and not Jay's) in Hae's car, his repeated calls to Hae on the 12th followed by never calling again, the 'I will kill' note, his behavior at Cathy's, his claim of school-track-mosque to his lawyer, etc, etc - and reasonable doubt is eliminated. The deliberations took two hours for a very good reason: this is a solid case. SK had to work very hard to create a mystery here, and one way she accomplished that was to present the case non-linearly." now stfu.

Sarah should have done a week long trial on the route from school to Best Buy to see if the buses leaving was consistent. When I was in school the buses would sometimes be delayed causing traffic just to get out of school parking lot. After 99 schools started to get more efficient so there for the buses leaving the parking lot 15yrs after the fact probably was able to clear out faster than in 99. Bottom line the detectives was lazy and dirty with the investigation. Trying to figure this out yrs after is just terrible. Tax payers pay a lot to make sure these cops get it right for them to just half ass this investigation. I mean they never even found the car, they was led to it smh. And probably would have never found the girl if it wasn’t for MR.S, all because they didn’t want to look where majority of dead bodies end up at!? Just sounds like a extremely LAZY investigation. This is frustrating. A simple Google search shows that it takes far longer than 1-2 minutes to strangle someone to death. You can make them unconscious in that time but if you stop strangling them they can still regain consciousness. If you're going to recreate a timeline at least do it with some accuracy!! It's virtually impossible that he could have strangled her to death in the time allotted.

Thank you! Lazy police work but also lazy on the podcast, it is impossible to strangle somebody that quickly. It is super hard to strangle a live body to begin with, you have to apply constant pressure, and with someone fighting this is very hard. On average it usually takes 5-6 mins to strangle a live body to death
@Zenab-hs1ky
@Zenab-hs1ky Жыл бұрын
Also if it took 4 minutes to strangle a person to death. Ahdnan would have most definitely have some bruises from hae fighting back especially on his hands to remove the pressure on her neck. It was stated that hae was tall and athletic to think that he would easily be able to put her at the trunk of the car at her height in a short amount of time sounds dumb

My question is why didn't the detectives do a fingernail scraping on the victim? If she was in fact scratching at Adnan while he was strangling her, then that right there would have been very useful, if not conclusive, information/evidence.

You said you got there in a time that would have given about 4 minutes to commit the murder and call Jay. It takes 4-5 minutes of continuous pressure to ensure death from strangulation. That would mean the entire time between the time you got to the spot to the 21 minutes mark would have been taken up solely by strangulation. That leaves no time for an argument. No time for build up. No time to stuff her in the trunk. No time to walk over to a pay phone. Unless every light was on his side and he immediately had his hands on her neck once they parked, its pretty much impossible. And even with those circumstances, theres still almost no chance it could work.

I was also thinking that, when Sarah tried to reenact those 21 minutes, two pretty relevant things I would've thought she (and/or Adnan) would mention and would've considered: * What Adnan had mentioned about the school buses taking forever to let out -- perhaps that could've really been the case back when he was at the school. Didn't she reenact this 15 years later? Isn't it possible some things may have changed in their process since then? That they might have, oh I don't know, become a bit more efficient during that time? At least I would hope so, lol.. And if so, that would of course be highly relevant to this timeline and reenactment. * Perhaps Sarah allowed for this and just didn't mention, but what about factoring in the time for some interaction with the market lady when Hae got out at the gym to grab the fries and apple juice, as she often did before leaving to pick up her cousin? I just hope during Sarah's reenactment, she didn't just go in the gym and then right back out. Those kinds of things take some time, and clearly this is an instance where any extra time and minutes really matter!!

I took an undergraduate law class in college. In addition to all the regular work, we had to listen to this podcast, discuss it in class, and write a paper on it. This episode tripped a flashback to what was perhaps the only time I ever raised my hand in that 500 person class. I asked the professor something that had just been gnawing at me from this. "In a jury trial especially, isn't ot a disadvantage to the defense that Gutierrez keeps ending every sentence with a high pitched whine, exaggerates every third word, and is hard to listen to, even for just a few seconds at a time? Or am I just too sensitive too it?" And my professor went on a 10-minute rant about how, yes, Gutierrez's style isn't unique, but is widely mocked by lawyers for being ineffective and annoying. He had some word for it, but I can't remember (go figure, it was 5 years ago). Moral of the story, if Gutierrez seems like an awful lawyer just from her voice, you're not wrong.

Anan is known to have been picked up by the same guy driving his car from practice. Not just on the day in question. Previously, it was said they were not good friends. They smoked weed together sometimes. So, why lend someone who is not your close friend your car on a regular basis and then your new cell phone? Why do the cell phone towers not match and why are people lying about phone calls and the timeline? Simple answere would be that Anan was lending a drug dealer his car and phone to make drug deals in exchange for either money or free weed. The reason the tower pings are all over the place would match up with drug dealing. Teens too afraid to admit they are buying/using drugs even during a homicide investigation is very typical.

I have done financial fraud investigation professionally. It is much different than criminal investigations, but I have consulted with homicide detectives during fraud investigations and have had the privilege of learning from them. I am in no way an expert in investigation, I am listening to this for fun while I work. I like puzzles and when the pieces don’t fit, I immediately see breaks in chains, which is what makes me semi-okay at fraud investigation. I am only ticking off notes as I listen and am not even giving it my full attention because I am working. Here is what I would have done (with my limited investigation knowledge): Made a map of all of the cell towers that pinged that day Located each known players residence on the map. Then I would have made a list of all students in Woodland High at the time and all of those who had graduated two years prior and linked all of them up with corresponding addresses. I would have created overlay maps; one the cell towers and surrounding cities; two the knowns and their addresses marked out on the map, three the map with all of the students currently attending Woodland high and then four the map with all of the students who had graduated in the previous two years from Woodland High and their addresses. I would make it so I could lay these maps on top of one another to find patterns/possible affiliations etc. I would then go to every person who was identified on the map near the cell phone tower pings and question each and everyone of them. It may be hundreds, but eventually, you would find out who was buying drugs, selling drugs and with that, you would tighten your circle until you were down to the essential players and then nail them down with facts you have gathered that they are not aware you know. That is how I would find the truth about what was going on that day. My assumption is it was drug deals because the easiest explanation is usually correct, but I may be wrong. Either way, I would find out. If it is what I think it is, then I would find out what could have happened between the drug dealer and the suspect that changed their relationship. Did either the drug dealer or suspect kill her or did the drug dealer’s dealer kill her due to information they did not want known? Or was she killed by someone totally outside of the current investigation and the drug dealer became afraid he have the spotlight turned on him and he made up his story to cover his butt? Don’t know, but every option must be investigated and ruled out until only remains. There is a saying that the truth lies at the bottom of a bottomless pit, but that is not the case with murder; it is black and white. Someone did it, of that you can be certain.
@anthonywesterman4166

Well if you knew anything about drug dealers, they don't make house calls. If he was making drug deals on them phone calls then he isn't a drug dealer. He's either looking to buy or he is moving product for other people. Adnan is lying about how close him and Jay actually were. Especially if you are letting a known drug dealer use your car and your phone.

Feel like jay premeditated the murder. He thought this out really well. The motive is the only thing. The time needed to do this needs to be exactly perfect for this to happen but not impossible. He was scared if he didn’t help Adnan, that Adnan would run to the police and snitch on Jay for being a drug dealer, right? But why would Adnan do that if Jay knows about what he did. Another thing, he didn’t want the police to know he’s a drug dealer, yet he admits all of it to get a plea deal... fishy right? Had Jay never came forward, he knows he would have been a main suspect. Therefore, he decided to pin it all on Adnan. I don’t know though, just a thought.. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Prosecutors simply want to convict, they don't really care too much about the truth. It's easier to convict Adnan since Jay is the star witness and prosecution can easily cook up a motive, whereas finding motive for Jay would be nearly impossible. That being said, I don't know if he did it or not.

I do think the police helped shape Jays story to fit the call log and their narrative. I've always doubted she was killed at Best Buy. I was thinking of something not too many people seem to dwell on...WHEN did Adnan get in her car? He didn't have his car or cell phone,and none of the last people that saw Hae saw him in the car or lurking around. Was he just waiting by the entrance or did they pick a meeting spot? I can see her maybe helping him with a quick ride on the way to where she was going,but how the hell did he convince her to stop at Best Buy? She knew she didn't have much time to pick up her cousin and get her home,then get to wrestling. I'm just wondering at what point he would have got in the car, how he convinced her to let him do so,and how he also managed to get her to stop somewhere when she's on a time frame.I feel like that's just not what happened. I'm sure he probably did kill her,but a lot of stuff doesn't add up. I think the only other thing that fits is that Jay somehow killed her while Adnan was at the library and track practice (or someone that was with Jay) and he fabricated the rest of the story. That's really the only other option with Jay knowing so much,but getting so much wrong at the same time.

Adnan hired Jay (with money stolen from the mosque) to kill Hae. Jay did it for the money and also to prove he was "hood". Then Jay got worried Adnan was going to turn him in, so Jay beat him to it. Adnan wasn't worried about the trial because he didn't physically kill her, he didn't think they'd be able to convict him. And he's insistent about his innocence because technically he didn't kill her. This also explains why Adnan was so touchy when Sarah brought up the money stolen from the mosque.

This is, of course, absurd. If Adnan did not kill Hae, that means that she left Woodlawn High unscathed at 2:30 ish. She was headed to pick up her cousin at day care, approximately 4 miles from Woodlawn. When Hae didn't show up to pick up her cousin, Hae's family alerted the authorities. How did Jay intercept and kill Hae in this short time frame. The only one to have this opportunity would have been Adnan, who was overheard by 2 credible witnesses asking Hae for a ride after school.

@@annlowry9841 Oh , I see, makes perfect sense. I feel like the only reason Jay story had inconsistencies was due to the fact that initially when jay was coperating with thedetectives he did not know what would be the implications of his co-operation. As time progressed , and as he received reassurances from the detectives that courts can be merciful and forgiving he began to divulge further information even though withholding some info,(probably knowing exactly when they murder took place , maybe decided where to bury the body , burying the body , getting paid etc...) due to his mistrust of authority figures. Its even possible the detectives purposefully left info off the record as to not force the courts to take action. The truth is somewhere in the middle but leaning way more towards Jays story. The only thing Adnan can do is detach himself from the whole thing, its a smart play but its the only play and since its the only play you get ridiculous coincidences manifesting such as the Nisha buttdial and not remebering where he was at the time , and the note that has written on it "I will kill".

The call log isn’t used to support anything Adnan says, because at the important parts of the narrative are all supported by the call log. All the stuff in the middle is whatever. Even if none of the call log matches the middle of the day after 2:36 until after 6, it supports the time of the murder, and the time of them burying Hae. His phone was in Lincoln Park at the same time when he said he had his phone. Jay led the cops to the car, knew Hae was strangled, and knew the killer wore red gloves. The only one Jay knew with a motive is Adnan. And Jay has since come out and said he lied bc a lot of this happened at his grandmothers, where he used to sell drugs from, and he didn’t want the cops taking her house. It all makes sense and Adnan did it

Wow Adnan must have the worst luck in history that he makes up his car being in the shop to get a ride from the victim under false pretenses and that happens to be right when the murder occurred. Oh and it also happened after three late night phone calls the night before and the victim was with her new boyfriend. Jay was less than truthful and accurate because he was definitely an accessory after the fact among other charges by helping dispose of the body and he was a drug dealer who was stoned most of the day. It’s a shell game of “look over here” when the facts clearly show that Adnan had the motive and opportunity and it was proven that he wasn’t at school but was with Jay when they made the phone call to the young girl and both of them spoke to her.

I can see where you're coming from but this podcast is specifically meant to find out who did this murder, therefor it will be more focused on finding evidence, especially since this court case was done with the upmost incompetence. They took no DNA evidence, no real character witnesses, never sufficiently investigate shadier people involved, never investigated alibis that could have assisted Adnan, and they based their entire conviction off of the continuously changing testimony of someone who has shown they are more than willing to break the law. It was just so unprofessional, which would raise a lot of eyebrows and questions. Not to mention, there isn't really a good way for them investigate from Hae's point of view.... Because she died: There's no way they can ask "Hey what happened" they can only do the best with what they've got: By reading things like her diary and hearing other people's analysis of the situation
