An iron-body demonstration showing the result of specialized Okinawan Karate training. Kiko techniques are Okinawan exercises used in "old style" karate. They are essentially the Ryukyu version of Iron Body Qi-gong (chi-gung). Ekkin-kiko (tendon-change) and Senzui-kiko (marrow-washing) are the basis of the Okinawan variants of "Iron Shirt" and "Golden Bell Cover" training.
This demonstration shows some of the the results of this training allowing one to painlessly absorb full power blows to vital areas without even the slightest damage.
Information about Okinawan Kiko training: ryukyuma.blogsp...
I posted a little about my background in the Ryukyu martial arts on my new blog: ryukyuma.blogsp...

I’ve done many such demonstrations and have suffered no ill effects. No damage or even pain (beyond the skin stinging a bit). The training works, the blows do not even cause bruising. I think the value of this training is self-evident.

Part 3 of the answer: As I take blows I create a type of expansive postural tension called gyame, and an expansive internal pressure as if inflating a basket ball. At the same time I visualized the ki exploding and imploding through my body in conjunction with exhalation and inhalation of the breath.

This demo was a lot of fun. They are always better when you get some really good strikers (and in Tom Valesky's case also a good joint-locker). Andrew can really hit as well. I forget the name of the young man wearing a pair of shorts but he really kicked hard. The kick to my knee at 1:16 made such a horrible sound that people had looks of horror and disbelief on their faces. Thanks to everyone who hit me and made this demo so much fun and so interesting.

Most "Iron body" demonstrations I see aren't that impressive. And some are just plain fishy... But you are obviously getting hit really hard in some very vulnerable places. You have succeeded in amazing me, good sir.

The process is a very graduated one that involves different levels of techniques and training methods that extend over about a 3 year process. I began experimenting with taking blows after around one year (or perhaps it was about a year and a half). Breath control, visualization and intention training, progressive impact conditioning and postural/muscular training are all addressed at pretty much all of the sequential levels of training (the training is progressively more complex/difficult).

This is great! True "iron body" conditioning. You remind me of myself with the ability to take on punishing blows...it is necessary to "take it in "not just "give it out". Osu!

I'm not sure if I adequately answered you question. I had conditioned my shins and forearms, but had done very little impact conditioning of the rest of my body. I mainly practiced various breathing exercises and using kata (Naihanchi mainly) as kiko.

See part 3 of my answer. All kiko methods involve three levels, physical posture, breath control, and visualization and/or intent, . Body, breath, and mind. All three are important.

When I was first learning I could only protect one spot at a time and would bruise if they missed the target area. Later I learned to protect the whole body at the same time. I never had any injuries besides the bruising I mentioned above. When I first was learning, solar plexus and groin hits would cause pain if my confidence wavered. After a few months, my confidence increased and pain was never again an issue.

PS. I really wish I had gotten a bone density test right before beginning the serious senzui kiko because I am subjectively quite certain that there have been big gains in the density and strength of my bones. It would be nice to have objective measurements to verify that perception. The changes in the soft tissues are fairly obvious and several friends (who didn't know about the new training regimens) have commented on the difference.

I never claimed Iron-shirt creates invincibility. I do claim I can take any strike you throw to anywhere below my chin. That is not invincibility but it is damn advantageous. You're welcome to prove me wrong. Come hit me and hurt me tough guy.

Thank for the comment. I recently began doing serious marrow washing kiko training (I've dabbled over the years but not seriously). I noticed improvement in skin tone, muscle tone, and an increase in weight within weeks of starting. I also started some Hojo-undo (which is derived from Chinese hard Qi-Gongs) and noticed additional gains in muscle tone quite quickly. I started this new training to stave off age related physical decline. So far I'm pretty impressed with the effects. :-)

Typically you will need to know that some kind attack is coming (but you don't need to know where). At first active visualization is required but after a while it just becomes a feeling you put into your body. It can be done faster than the time it takes to do a parry with you hand. So, it is very applicable to self defense. If you don't know the attack is coming you will still have increased resistance to damage but not the same level.

PS in the video description there is a link to my "seminar reviews" where you can read firsthand accounts of the participants trying their hardest to damage my knees, trachea, testicles and many many other weak areas. Notice that they are quite certain and quite clear about what parts of my body the actually hit

As I said, there is a gradual training process that works on many levels at the same time. But I think you might be more interested in what I do at the most of impact. I adopt correct posture (which is ideally- somewhat- rooted), exhale while maintaining a pressurized feeling, try to expand or inflate my body, visualize energy exploding through my body from the tanden, and adopt a belief/intention that I will make my body indestructible (but obviously it isn't actually totally indestructible).

The blows are to the groin not inner thighs. In both my demonstration videos I ask them to use hand blows in addition to kicks so they can verify my testicle are external to my body and that they are being directly impacted. You can hear them verify this on the videos The blows in both videos are clearly to the trachea not upper chest. I invited total strangers to hit me anywhere below the chin with any strikes they wanted. I look forward to seeing your video demonstrating the same abilities.

Have you posted about the health benefits you have obtained from kiko training?

The training is more oriented to strengthening the body rather than "deadening" parts. Firmly tapping the body with special implements IS part of the training but there are a lot of other elements too. I'm not sure how well the individual elements of the training work by themselves. I suspect it is one of those "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts" sort of things.

Directing the visualized ki is *part* of Iron Body training so this not an either or question. I believe what you are really asking is: "is this the result of impact conditioning". Impact conditioning is part of chi-gung/qi-gong/kiko practice and it is one of the methods used for directing ki. However, I had done very little impact conditioning at the time of this demonstration. I was not yet doing much marrow washing. I do practice marrow washing now and impact conditioning is inherent.

A few hundred words/phrases in Nihongo, a several dozen in Uchinaguchi. A little history where relevant to the history of the art such as the impact of the Minamoto/Taira conflict on Ryukyu Bujutsu, the influence of the Sapposhi, links between historically significant individuals and locations (ie Uni Uhugushuku and Chibana castle etc), the Fuzhou Ryukyukan (1872-1945) and so on. Culturally I'm limited to things like traditional medicine and Okinawan norms for polite behavior etc

I am not a doctor however in Russian Systema we do sometime very simular.We hit and kick each other alot. However we stay away from kicking the knee joint.I would not recommend that. However with that said I have found you can take big hits by being very relaxed and peaceful and you use your breathing to control pain and release pain. Concider this,what do you folks tell people to do in the hospitals.You tell them to remain calm and relaxed and to breath.

You have to understand this take practice and you need respectful partners to practice this. and it is NOT just breathing.With out breathing we could not live natcurally.Correct breathing is not new age mumble jumble it is at the very core of being able to do things like this.So many people in martial arts worry about the best tricks when in fact they should be worrying about "just breathing".It is at the very core of self defence Also , you need to be relaxed and calm and confident

I find it funny that you single out the knee as the target to avoid as it is one of the few that would never be fatal. The worst that would happen would be a very bad (and permanent) limp. The trachea, base of the skull, spine, liver, kidneys (and I've been told even the groin) could potentially be fatal. This requires special training and involves more than just "breathing through the pain". Please don't try this at home kids.

........your mind.That is aside from slowing building up your ability to with stand the blow what are you visualization techniques? are you rooting the leg into the ground? as for us we learn to take the hit through breathing and slightly aquising to take away the force in the manner of how you catch a fast thrown baseball, your glove hand gives a little to take away the sting and power of the ball yes, I do realise you need very manner respectful people to practice this technique

yes, I mean thats what I was trying to say and often repeat it, specially about herd/crowd mentality and trends. But in all honesty dear Ryan MMA by itself is a trend and its really hard to enter into any kind of serious conversation about traditional e.g. Chinese arts when there no real masters or at least committed disciples (let alone teachers)...and only source of inf. is e.g Joe Rogan and his general disgust/prejudice with traditional arts.

So you are taking shot to your groin? I do have experince taking low kick and even how to move my leg out of the way of low kicks.This is because Ihurt my knee years ago and so I am not keen on tempting fate with a side of the knee strike.I will say I am very impressed with that. However, with the body and face I am very use to taking strikes.I have been hit by Martin Wheeler and his hits felt like a cannon ball. Aside from correct breathing what is going through..........

What style of karate is this?
@thecontemplative2
@thecontemplative2 6 жыл бұрын
This is just Okinawan karate... By which I mean that "styles" are (IMHO) much less important than "approaches"... When I filmed this video, I had mainly trained in Shorin-ryu [including a branch of Shorin-ryu called "Ryukyu Kempo"]. Shorin-ryu is a mix of Suidi along with some Tumaidi. I had also trained to some degree in Goju-ryu. Goju-ryu is essentially a form of Nafadi. That said, Goju-ryu's approach has been significantly influenced by Suidi. When filming this video I had adopted training methods from both Shorin-ryu cand Goju-ryu. When I say "approach" is more important than "style", I specifically mean the "old style" approach to karate versus the modern ("shin-budo") approach. Any style which is sufficiently grounded in the roots of Okinawan karate can adopt the "old style" approach relatively seamlessly. ryukyuma.blogspot.com/2012/01/old-style-karate-top-12-ways-it-differs.html

I respect Kyokushin and I have many good friends which are from Kyokushin and which developed great pain tolerance as well as their muscles/tendons and bones but it is just not true that you are doing same as this person is doing in any exercise let alone sparring.

Yeah, as impressive as this is, things like this can only be achieved by methods that cause considerable damage to some bodily systems. (As do all forms of extreme training. If developing abilities like this didn't come with downsides, our bodies would develop them without training, as long as we had the nutrients. The same goes for having extreme strength and/or huge muscles; one has to force one's body to develop such abilities against its will, since they shorten one's life span.)
